  • The aim of this study is to explore diverse characteristics of females aged 25 to 49 years grouped according to Body Mass Index(BMI), and to investigate the effect of body satisfaction and self-esteem on involvement in dieting within each BMI group. In total, 549 females who participated in an online survey were divided into groups based on BMI(underweight, normal, and overweight). Results demonstrated three key factors, as follows. First, differences were identified among BMI groups according to demographic characteristics(age, household income, and marital status), although no difference according to education level was found. Second, differences according to BMI groups were found in body satisfaction and involvement in dieting, whereas were not found in self-esteem. Third, model testing for each BMI group showed, a positive correlation between body satisfaction and self-esteem in all three groups. However, there was a difference in causal relationships among variable across BMI groups. Body satisfaction negatively affected and self-esteem positively affected involvement in dieting for the underweight and normal groups, whereas there was no causal relationship between variables in the overweight group. Based on these results, basic information of groups segmented by the level of BMI was obtained, which could be used for both academic and practical implications.

  • This research explores the relationship between body image and clothing behavior in order to enhance self-efficacy among multicultural children based on a survey of 167 children. The statistical analysis indicated that children value(in decreasing order)family-esteem, friend-esteem, self-esteem, and school-esteem. School-esteem is the lowest, with boys displaying slightly higher levels of esteem than girls. A boys' self-esteem appears enhanced by higher satisfaction with overall appearance and weight; however, girls' self-esteem helped them address appearance and physical characteristics with positive attitudes. In addition, the clothing behavior of children significantly influenced self-esteem to differing degrees based upon gender. A boys' self-esteem can be increased by having them show interest in clothes rather than letting them wear similar clothes to their friends because their self-esteem can be heightened by higher interests and lower similarity. A girls' self-esteem can be augmented by the clean management of clothes and comfortable wearing due to their emphasis on manageability and comfort. This survey was limited to the Gyeonggi and Inchon area and leaves room for future studies.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between eating disorders, body image, and self-esteem of high school girls. Data were analysed by SPSS/PC using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, ANOVA, & Pearson correlation coefficient. The results of this study are as follows. 1. The mean of body weight and height of the subjects were 52.49kg, 161.16cm. As defined by BMI, the obese subjects were very rare(2.1%) and the rest(97.9%) was under weight or normal. 2. More than 53% of the subjects perceived their weight as overweight, while 2.1% of the women were obese as defined by BMI. Ninety-three percent of the subjects were not satisfied with their body shape. 3. For the need for weight control, subject's own judgement(70.8%) was the highest percentage. High percentages of the women reported a decrease in the amount of eating(22.9%), and an increase in the amount of exercise(52.8%) as effective methods of weight control. 4. The total mean score of anorexia nervosa was higher than bulimia nervosa. 5. The scores of eating disorders did not differ significantly by the BMI score : The score of eating disorders was highest in the group os the overweight. 6. The score s of body image did not differ significantly by the BMI score : The score of body image was highest in the group of the overweight. 7. No significant difference was found in over all self esteem scores according to the BMI scores. 8. There was high positive correlation between BMI and eating disorders(r=.2158, p=.0094), between self-esteem and body image(r=.4288, p=.0001), and positive correlation between BMI and self-esteem(r=.1569, p=.0604), and between BMI and body image(r=.1354, p=.1056).

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the factors affecting body image among undergraduate students. Method: The research design for this study was a descriptive survey design using a convenience sampling. Data collection was done using self-report questionnaires with 319 undergraduate students located in 3 cities, Seoul, Gangneung and Seosan. Pearson correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression with the SPSS Win 12.0 Program were used to analyze the data. Results: In the hierarchical multiple regression analysis, gender, height, weight and college major were controlled. Body surveillance and body shame significantly predicted 72.3% of appearance orientation. Sociocultural attitudes toward appearance and self-esteem significantly predicted 33.5% of appearance evaluation. Self-esteem and body surveillance significantly predicted 15.9% of health orientation. Self-esteem significantly predicted 23.3% of health evaluation. Conclusion: Findings from this study provide a comprehensive understanding of body image and related factors in undergraduate students in Korea. However, further study with a larger random sample and more a detailed research design is necessary.

Number of middle-aged women participated in the survey were 150. Data were collected by means of self reported questionnaires from 1. September to 30. November 2011 and analyzed by using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression with SPSS windows version 17.0. There were statistically significant differences in the health promoting lifestyle according to the frequency of physical activities, frequency of hobbies or social activities and menstruation state. There were significant positive correlations between health promoting lifestyle and self-esteem, anger-control and social support. Negative correlations were found between health promoting lifestyle and depression, anger-in and anger-out. Self-esteem, social support, frequency of physical activities and frequency of hobbies or social activities were predictors of a health promoting lifestyle. Nurses should focus on factors identified in this study when developing nursing interventions to improve a health promoting lifestyle for middle-aged women.

  • Since students of the College of Maritime Sciences will become professionals contributing to the development of the Korean shipping industry after graduation, they are required to successfully complete school life including theoretical and practical curriculum with health promotion behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing health promotion behavior by students of the College of Maritime Science in order to collect basic data through a survey for the development of health promotion programs. Health promotion behavior by students of the College of Maritime Sciences was less frequent than by other college students, and the levels of health promotion behavior sub-domains were lower in order of interpersonal relations, spiritual growth, stress management, nutrition, physical activity, and health responsibility. The most influential factors for health promotion behavior were learner participation, health promotion self-efficacy, self-esteem, and social support. It is necessary to develop a differentiated health promotion program considering the characteristics of students and to apply it systematically from the time of admission to improve health promotion behavior by students of the College of Maritime Sciences.

The interviews were performed, during the period from April 1st, to June 30th, 2011, to 396 elderlies in Daejeon city. As a results, the self-esteem was negatively correlated with state anxiety and interpersonal behavior trait, while it was positively correlated with locus of control. While state anxiety was positively correlated with interpersonal behavior trait, it was negatively correlated with locus of control, and interpersonal behavior trait was positively correlated with locus of control. Multiple stepwise analysis revealed that the factors of influence on self-esteem included IADL, spouse, mastication of food and amnesia. The factors of influence on State anxiety included mastication of food, IADL, spouse, subjective health status, disability of body, subjective sleep evaluation and educational level. The factors of influence on Interpersonal dependent behavior trait included spouse, IADL, monthly income and subjective health status. The factors of influence on locus of control included spouse and visual acuity. Above results suggested that the self-esteem, state anxiety, interpersonal behavior trait and locus of control of subjects were significantly related with the sociodemographic characteristics, health related factors and health status.
