  • The objective of this work is to study the rebirth of the French baroque opera and to analyze Atys of Quinault and Lully. Accordingly, it can appear interesting to take into account not only the reception of Atys in the 17th century in France, but also its representations in 1987. Then, it seems important to us to examine the studies on the modification of the myth in Atys, while questioning the legitimacy of the Fasti of Ovid as a primary source. Lastly, we will endeavor to emphasize the influence of Natale Conti's Mythologies on Atys, and that of Michel de Marolles's the Tableaux du Temple des Muses on the scene of the sleep of the hero. In a general way, in regard to the influence of the sources in Atys, these two works drew until now only very little the attention of criticism. The difficulties which Louis XIV crosses at the time of the genesis of Atys, such as the death of the marshal of Turenne or the departure of Louise de La Vallière to the convent, seem to have nourished the choices of Quinault and Lully. Atys is an admirable spectacle with the changes at sight of the decorations, the varied machines and the splendid costumes, but in spite of the immense success of this opera, he is forgotten after the representation given at Fontainebleau in 1753. Two centuries later, les Arts Florissants' production of Atys in 1987 - with its triumph which one knows - seems to announce a rebirth of the French baroque opera. William Christie and Jean-Marie Villégier still succeed in presenting their production in 2011 thanks to Ronald Stanton, American fortunate who was impressed by the representation of Atys in 1987. Villégier and his artistic team choose a single decoration and remove the machines in order to place work at the court plunged into mourning of Louis XIV twenty years after the premiere of Atys. The "classicism" of their dramatic presentation emphasizes the classical dramaturgy and the tragic side of this opera. Criticisms often stress the importance of Ovid's Fasti as a primary source, while adding his Metamorphoses as a secondary source (the metamorphosis of Atys in pine and the scene of his sleep). Quinault borrows indeed from the Fasti some elements : in love with Atys, Cybele entrusts the responsibility to him of keep her temple ; the reciprocal love between Atys and Sangaride causes the revenge on the goddess. However he borrows more from the French translation of Natale Conti's Mythologies which present the Phrygian version of the myth of Atys. In the first three accounts of this version, one finds common points with the opera : 1) Atys refuses the physical desire of Cybele ; the goddess makes Atys insane instead of making die Sangaride ; 2) the lover of the hero is daughter of the river of Sangar ; Cybele makes change into pine Atys who committed suicide (or ready to commit suicide) ; 3) the goddess discovers the physical relation of the young couple. Natale Conti's Mythologies also present the Lydian version of the myth : a furious wild boar sent by irritated Zeus kill Atys and several people. One can suppose that this part undoubtedly influences the "monster" and its "dreadful howls" evoked by Atys in a fit of insanity. Moreover, the dreams make discover in Atys the intentions of Cybele, which is not without relationship with the translated text of Natale Conti : the Mythologies indicate that sweet Sleep reveals "the intentions & the plans of the Gods." To manufacture the famous scene of the sleep of the hero, Quinault and Lully make use of the annotations of the "Palace of the Sleep" located at the end of the Tableaux du Temple des Muses : Michel de Marolles translates and explains the texts of Catullus (the sleep of Atys), of Ovid (the Sleep and his three sons), and of Ausonius (good dreams / bad dreams). In spite of the important influence of these sources, Quinault and Lully modify some elements of the myth : the theme of castration is removed because of the proprieties ; the suicide of Atys is at the same time an act of love and an act of revolt against Cybele ; the cruel goddess is also a desperate and weak lover; the invention of the character of Celenus returns the love of the young prohibited and tragic. Quinault fascinate the contemporary public with the interior movements of complex characters and the music of Lully emphasizes this quality of the libretto.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the kinematical characteristics of the pendular and the translational movements of each cervical vertebra at flexion and extension for understanding the mechanism of injury to the cervical spine. Methods: Twenty volunteers, young men (24~37 years), with clinically and radiographically normal cervical spines were studied. We induced two directional passive movements and then took X-ray pictures. The range of pendular movement could be measured by measuring the variation of the distance between the center point of two contiguous cervical vertebrae, and the range of translational movement could be measured by measuring the variation of the shortest distance between the center point of a vertebra and an imaginary line connecting the center points of two lower contiguous cervical vertebrae. The measurements were done by using a picture archiving and communicating system (PACS). Results: The total length of all cervical vertebrae in the neutral position was, on average, 133.66 mm, but in both flexion and extension, the lengths were widened to 134.83 mm and 134.79 mm, respectively. The directions of both the pendular and the translational movements changed at the $2^{nd}$ cervical vertebra, and the ranges of both movements were significantly larger from the $5^{th}$ cervical vertebra to the $7^{th}$ cervical vertebra for flexion and combined flexion and extension motion (p<0.05). Conclusion: The kinematical characteristics for flexion and extension motions were variable at each level of cervical vertebrae. The $1^{st}$ and the $2^{nd}$ cervical vertebrae and from the $5^{th}$ to the $7^{th}$ cervical vertebrae were the main areas of cervical spinal injury. This shows, according to "Hook's law," that the tissues supporting this area could be weak, and that this area is sensitive to injury.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the implications of religious activities to longevity in a perspective of religious people in the ancient near east. The major sources of the study are the records of Adad-Guppi in the Neo-Babylonian Empire, prayers of Daniel in the Old Testament and records of Anna in the New Testament. The research method is a synchronic method based on final forms of the texts. Adad-Guppi lived for 104 years with temple-centered lives, fasting-like dedication, prayer and mission for the nation. Daniel fasted and prayed for the return of Jewish nation, and restoration of the city and the temple in Jerusalem, resulting in longevity of late eighties in the court of Babylon. Anna lived for more than 100 years old with her life mission for the messiah in spite of limitations of her times as an old widow. The implications of religious activities with temple-centered lives, fasting, prayer, and mission for the ages are understood to be beneficial to longevity in a perspective of the ancient near east.

  • The effects of foliar application of phosphate was investigated in the light of plant physiological point of view. The phosphate applied on the foliar both in meiosis and heading time was penetrated considerably into the rice. The amount of P absorbed by foliar application at high temperature was higher than that at low temperature but still considerable amount of P was absorbed at low temperature. The phosphate applied on younger flag leaf was absorbed more vigorously than the second and third leaves. The absorbed P on leaf was translocated to the panicle, especially on the brown rice starch, then moved to another panicle wherever the phosphate was needed. The major fraction of absorbed P under high temperature condition was T.C.A. soluble-Ba insoluble phosphate of mainly phytic form but Ba soluble-EtOH insoluble fraction, sugar phosphate ester, was identified as dominant P under low temperature condition.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the causes of errors from EGR posture on the balance beam, which is bending flick-flack salto backward stretched national team players through kinematic analysis, and present training methods for them so as to provide scientifically useful information to coaches and athlete. Findings from this study are summarized below. The most important factors that affect the errors in boyd center position and speed change were the speed change of left and right body centers and the horizontal and vertical speed changes. The left and right acceleration changes were greater in failed posture than in successful posture. The horizontal and vertical accelerations in E3 and E5 were the key factors that affected the backward somersault and landing. The angular speed changes which varied between success and failure were notable in head and shoulder joints. In individual results. The section when the angular speeds of head and shoulder joint must be the greatest was E4. In this section, when the body is extending instantly in a bent posture, increasing the angular speeds of head, shoulder and hip joints can improve the duration of staying in the air and the rotation radius of a somersault.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate kinematic coordination and control of lower segments in skill process. For the investigation, we examined the difference of resultant linear velocity of segments and angle vs angle graph. Novice subjects were 9 male middle school students who has never been experienced a taekwondo and expert subjects were 7 university taekwondo players. We analyzed kinematic variables of Dollyochagi motion through videographical analysis and the conclusion were as follows. 1. Examining the graph of novice subjects' maximal resultant linear velocity of the thigh, shank, and foot segment, as it gets closer to the end of the training, the maximal resultant linear velocity in each segment increased. Statistical analysis showed the following results; thigh segment caused the increase of speed, using the trunk segment's momentum in the latter term of learning, while the shank segment utilized the momentum of the adjacent proximal segment at the beginning of learning, and the foot segment in the middle of learning. 2. Until the point where the knee joint angle is minimum, as the novice group learn the skill, the flexion of knee and hip joints has changed into the form of coordination pattern in phase. On the other hand, the expert group showed continual coordination pattern in phase that the movement sequences were smooth. From the knee joint maximal flexion to impact timing, all novice and expert groups showed coordination pattern out of phase. 3. From the knee joint maximal flexion to impact timing, the ankle joint was fixed and the knee joint was extended to all the novice stages and expert subjects.

  • The walker provides stability for walking for people whose lower extremities are disabled. It is important to measure and determine the appropriate height of a walker to conserve energy and to improve function. The purposes of this study were to examine effects of walker height and gait velocity on triceps, latissimus dorsi muscle activation, and energy expenditure index (EEI) during ambulation with a walker. Fifteen healthy subjects participated in this study. Each subject was assigned a walker with one of three heights (high, standard, lower height) and of two gait velocities (comfortable gait velocity or fast gait velocity). Electromyographic data were collected from triceps and latissimus dorsi, and EEI was determined from each condition. Two-way repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the statistical significance. Post hoc comparison was performed with the Bonferroni test. The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. There was a significant difference in the %MVIC of triceps among different walker height factors. Post hoc comparison revealed that %MVIC of dominant triceps brachii was more significantly increased in patients who used the higher walker than those who used the lower walker (p<.05). 2. There were significant differences in the %MVIC of the latissimus dorsi among different walker height factors and gait velocity factors. Post hoc comparison revealed that the %MVIC of dominant latissimus dorsi was also more significantly increased in patients who used the higher walker than those who used the lower walker (p<.05) and in those who used the faster gait velocity than those who used the slower gait velocity (p<.05). 3. There were significant differences in the EEI among different walker height factors and gait velocity factors. Post hoc comparison revealed that the EEI was significantly increased among those who used higher and lower walkers compared with the standard walker. The EEI was also more significantly increased among those who used the fast gait velocity than those who used the slower gait velocity (p<.05). It has been concluded that increased muscle activation in triceps and latissimus dorsi was required when the walker height increased and that more energy was exp ended when the gait velocity increased. Therefore, from the findings of this study, it is recommended that walker height be adjusted according to the purposes of gait training and that healthy subjects conserve energy when ambulating with standard walkers in a comfortable gait velocity.
