  • Asplenium yoshinagae (Aspleniaceae), previously known only from Japan, southwest China to Himalaya, was found in Gageo-do, Heuksan-myeon, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do. This species is similar to A. trichomonas, A. tripteropus, A. boreale, A. normale and A. oligophlebium by having gemmae and auricle of pinna, and distinguished from the latters by distinct stipe length, stalk of pinna, acute apex of pinna, length of indusium and shape of sorus. The Local name, Ga-geo-kko-ri-go-sa-ri, was newly given considering the locality. To reveal the interspecific relationships within the genus Asplenium in Korea, cladistic analysis was performed for 22 taxa of Asplenium as ingroup and 2 taxa of Diplazium as outgroup from Korea based on 20 morphological characters. As the results, the genus Asplenium seperated strongly from outgroup, and divided into 4 clades. Asplenium yoshinagae belong to the third clade. A. hondoense N. Murtakami & S. I. Hatanaka, which contained in the second clade, had treated as Hymenasplenium, but this results supported that this taxon may be contained in Asplenium, and also, Asplenium ruprechtii, not in Comptosorus. The morphological characters and illustrations of the species are provided together with photographs of habitat.

  • We investigated the flora of Imja-do(Isl.), an island of the Shinan archipelago, located in Imja-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jollanamo-do and discussed the vascular plants found there. Twenty-four separate field trips (100days) were completed from August of 1997 to October of 2009. As a result, we identified the distribution of 526 taxa in Imja-do(Isl.), comprising 112 families, 331 genera, 463 species, 1 subspecies, 60 varieties, and 2 forms. There are a total of 78 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants and one taxon of level II endangered species, Millettia japonica, as designated by the Korean Ministry of the Environment. The floristic regional indicator plants are as follows; four taxa of level V such as Utricularia bifida, two taxa of level IV such as Cladium chinense, 14 taxa of level III such as Aletris spicata, three taxa of level II, and 55 taxa of level I. In addition, one endangered species (EN), Nymphoides coreana, five vulnerable species (VU),such as Ilex cornuta, and three near-threatened species (NT) such as Utricula riaracemosa, were found in the investigated area. The plants of Imja-do(Isl.) are classified into four types based on the plant geographical origin, as follows: 1) boreal plants advancing southward in a glacial period, 2) temperate plants spreading eastward from the Himalayas and China to Japan passing through the south coast of Korea, 3) subtropical plants, and 4) indigenously developed endemic species of the warm-temperate region of East Asia.

  • This study investigates the development process of Mt. Deok on Bigeum Island, Shinan, on the basis of geomorphological and geological analyses. K-Ar dating was carried out on two samples of the acidic lapilli tuff developed in the study area, and the obtained K-Ar ages are $70.4{\pm}1.4$ and $76.9{\pm}1.5Ma$, which correspond to the Late Cretaceous (Campanian). Mt. Deok is surrounded by rock cliff, and various weathering microtopographic features, such as tafoni, tor and gnamma, are developed. Tafoni with diverse morphologic types is the most dominant feature, indicative of intense salt weathering. Geological characteristics such as porous tuff and joint have played an important role in the development of tafoni and rock cliff. Geomorphology and geology of Mt. Deok reflect paleoenvironmental change and interaction between human and nature in the coastal area.

  • Onion downy mildew, caused by Peronospora destructor, is a major disease in onion cultivation areas in Korea. The causal fungi were collected and analyzed based on sequence similarity and molecular phylogenetic relationships of multi-gene sequences, including the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. All isolates from Changnyeong-gun, Hamyang-gun, and Hapcheon-gun in Gyeongnam province, and Muan-gun, Haenam-gun, and Sinan-gun in Jeonnam province were identical in the four types of gene sequences, indicating they were genetically the same strains. In this study, a PCR method was developed based on the ITS gene sequences to amplify the specific DNA fragment for P. destructor only. The detection limit of was total genomic DNA of the P. destructor and the plant $0.7ng/{\mu}L$. Therefore, the developed PCR method could be used to detect P. destructor effectively from symptomless onion leaves.

  • In a cultivated field of Salicornia europae in the Jeonam Province, Korea, Scrobipalpa salinella (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) which feeds and leads to a serious damage was found. The discovery of this species is to reconfirm its distribution in Korea because the first report by Park and Ponomarenko (2006) was based on a single female and it was collected in a montane area far from seaside where its host plants, halophytes, are planted. For identification, photos of imago and genitalia are given, and the damage by larvae on Salicornia europae are noted.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the visual landscape plan for Shinan province with ecological landscape resources, which is comprised of more than 1,000 islands. The plan was done by the order of image plan, landscape structure plan and detained landscape plan. The image of Shinan province was elicited as 'nature', 'complexity' and 'connectivity', by the aspects of planning, cognitive and strategic sides. The landscape zones are planned, such as leisure zone, rural & marine ecological zone and marine tourism zone, and the landscape axes are also set, such as marine axis, ecological axis and circular axis. Especially to conserve the ecological resources, some conservation zones are proposed and design guidelines for each landscape type are also provided, which are not commonly included in the urban landscape plan. Consequently, the landscape plan and ecological environmental plan were complementary to each other. In the detailed landscape plan, more specific plans and design guidelines are suggested for coastal scenery, village and forest scenery, historical and cultural landscape management and promotion. To improve the visual landscape in terms of planning and administrative aspects, the visual landscape plan has become increasingly important for the local governments. The establishment of visual landscape plan may hopefully help to make Shinan province more beautiful and attractive. The landscape plan and ecological environment plan should be integrated, and the further discussion and research are necessary.
