An Analysis of Ginseng Advertisements in 1920-1930s Newspapers During Japanese Colonial Period (일제강점기 중 1920-1930년대 신문에 실린 인삼 광고 분석)

  • The influx of modern culture in the early 20th century in Korea led to numerous changes in the country's ginseng industry. With the development of ginseng cultivation technology and commerce, the production and consumption of ginseng increased, and various ginseng products were developed using modern manufacturing technology. Consequently, competition for the sales of these products became fierce. At that time, newspaper advertisements showed detailed trends in the development and sales competition of ginseng products. Before 1920, however, there were few advertisements of ginseng in newspapers. This is thought to be because newspapers had not yet been generalized, and the ginseng industry had not developed that much. Ginseng advertisements started to revitalize in the early 1920s after the launch of the Korean daily newspapers Dong-A Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo. Such advertisements in this period focused on emphasizing the traditional efficacy of Oriental medicine and the mysterious effects of ginseng. There were many advertisements for products that prescribed the combination of ginseng and deer antler, indicating the great popularity of this prescription at the time. Furthermore, advertisements showed many personal experience stories about taking such products. Mail order and telemarketing sales were already widely used in the 1920s . In 1925, there were advertisements that ginseng products were delivered every day. The advertisements revealed that ginseng roots were classified more elaborately than they are now according to size and quality. Ginseng products in the 1920s did not deviate significantly from the scope of traditional Oriental medicine formulations such as liquid medicine, pill, and concentrated extract. In the 1930s, ginseng advertisements became more active. At this time, experts such as university professors and doctors in medicine or in pharmacy appeared in the advertisements. They recommended ginseng products or explained the ingredients and medicinal effects of the products. Even their experimental notes based on scientific research results appeared in the advertisements to enhance the reliability of the ginseng products. In 1931, modern tablet advertisements appeared. Ginseng products supplemented with vitamins and other specific ingredients as well as ginseng thin rice gruel for the sick appeared at this time. In 1938, ginseng advertisements became more popular, and advertisements using talents as models, such as dancer Choi Seunghee or famous movie stars, models appeared. Ginseng advertisements in the 1920s and 1930s clearly show a side of our rapidly changing society at the time.

Geomagnetic Paleosecular Variation in the Korean Peninsula during the First Six Centuries (기원후 600년간 한반도 지구 자기장 고영년변화)

  • One of the applications of geomagnetic paleo-secular variation (PSV) is the age dating of archeological remains (i.e., the archeomagnetic dating technique). This application requires the local model of PSV that reflects non-dipole fields with regional differences. Until now, the tentative Korean paleosecular variation (t-KPSV) calculated based on JPSV (SW Japanese PSV) has been applied as a reference curve for individual archeomagnetic directions in Korea. However, it is less reliable due to regional differences in the non-dipole magnetic field. Here, we present PSV curves for AD 1 to 600, corresponding to the Korean Three Kingdoms (including the Proto Three Kingdoms) Period, using the results of archeomagnetic studies in the Korean Peninsula and published research data. Then we compare our PSV with the global geomagnetic prediction model and t-KPSV. A total of 49 reliable archeomagnetic directional data from 16 regions were compiled for our PSV. In detail, each data showed statistical consistency (N > 6, 𝛼95 < 7.8°, and k > 57.8) and had radiocarbon or archeological ages in the range of AD 1 to 600 years with less than ±200 years error range. The compiled PSV for the initial six centuries (KPSV0.6k) showed declination and inclination in the range of 341.7° to 20.1° and 43.5° to 60.3°, respectively. Compared to the t-KPSV, our curve revealed different variation patterns both in declination and inclination. On the other hand, KPSV0.6k and global geomagnetic prediction models (ARCH3K.1, CALS3K.4, and SED3K.1) revealed consistent variation trends during the first six centennials. In particular, the ARCH3K.1 showed the best fitting with our KPSV0.6k. These results indicate that contribution of the non-dipole field to Korea and Japan is quite different, despite their geographical proximity. Moreover, the compilation of archeomagnetic data from the Korea territory is essential to build a reliable PSV curve for an age dating tool. Lastly, we double-check the reliability of our KPSV0.6k by showing a good fitting of newly acquired age-controlled archeomagnetic data on our curve.

Mitigation of Insufficient Capacity Problems of Central Bus Stops by Controlling Effective Green Time (유효녹색시간 조정을 활용한 중앙버스정류장 용량 부족 완화 방안 연구)

  • After the introduction of the central bus lane system, bus traffic was prioritized. This resulted in improved trust from bus users. However, the low capacity at the central bus stop reduces traffic speed and punctuality. In addition, physical constraints are inevitable because the construction of central bus lanes and bus stops considers the city's road geometry. Therefore, this study attempted to optimize the effective green time of the traffic signal system at the entrance and exit of the central bus stop to remedy its insufficient operational capacity. The Transit Capacity and Quality of Service Manual and Korea Highway Capacity Manual were used as the analysis methodologies. The number of stop areas for central bus stops to be built was determined by excluding variable physical factors, and field survey data collected from nine randomly selected central bus stops currently installed in Seoul were used. A scenario analysis was conducted on the central bus stops with insufficient capacity by adjusting the effective green time, and the capacity of the central bus stop was set as the dependent variable. According to the results, 26.7 percent of the central bus stops with insufficient capacity can solve the problem of insufficient capacity. Therefore, the results of this study can be verified by improving the operation level, and it can be effective even if the number of central bus stops calculated by engineering is not guaranteed during the planning stage of the central bus stop. As the number of central bus stops is expected to increase further as the number of central bus stops increases, it is necessary to improve the number of central bus stops. Therefore, it is hoped that the results presented in this study will be used as basic data for the improvement plan at the operational level before introducing the physical improvement plan.

Optimization of Test Parameters and Interlaboratory Validation of Neuro-2a Assay for the Detection of Tetrodotoxin (테트로도톡신 검출을 위한 Neuro-2a 시험법의 시험 매개변수 최적화 및 실험실 간 검증 연구)

  • Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent marine-derived neurotoxin. Existing detection methods for TTX, such as mouse bioassay (MBA) and LC-MS/MS, are limited by ethical concerns, and low detection thresholds, particularly in the absence of reference standards. Alternative testing methods are thus critically needed. The Neuro-2a assay is a well-established cell-based assay that uses mouse-derived Neuro-2a cells treated with ouabain (O) and veratridine (V), to induce cell death via excessive Na+ influx. This assay quantitates TTX based on its ability to inhibit Na+ influx, thereby allowing the cells to survive. In this study, we optimized parameters including TTX treatment conditions and O/V concentrations, to adapt the Neuro-2a assay for domestic laboratory conditions. The optimal O/V concentrations were determined to be 600/60 µM. We also identified eight concentration points (50-0.195 ng/mL) that generated a sigmoidal dose-response curve. By conducting 24 replicate experiments, we established six key data criteria to ensure reliability, with EC50 values ranging from 3.824 to 1.268 ng/mL. A comparison of inter-laboratory variability revealed that all quality control and data criteria values, except for COV+ and Bottom OD, showed coefficients of variation (CVs) ranging from 1.31 to 14.92%, confirming the assay's accuracy and reproducibility. In this study, we also elucidate optimal assay conditions, validated quality control and data criteria for TTX detection using the Neuro-2a assay in local laboratories. Additionally, we conducted an assay with 4,9-anhydroTTX, a TTX analog, and determined a TEF value of 0.2098, demonstrating the applicability of this method for detecting TTX and its analogs. This optimized Neuro-2a assay is expected to serve as an effective alternative to MBA for detecting TTX in domestic seafood products.
