  • Insamsokmieum (人蔘粟米飮), which is a kind of water gruels made with millet, ginseng, glutinous rice, and some minor ingredients, was frequently used as a medicinal food for the royal family, and it appeared first at the 10th year of King Sukjong's reign. We investigated Insamsokmieum through a literature review and the "SeungjeongwonIlgi(承政院日記)" of King Sukjong (肅宗) from his 1st year (1674) to 46th year (1720). We analyzed the nutritional value and efficacy of Insamsokmieum. In Oriental medicine, Insamsokmieum is prescribed mainly to treat symptoms such as nausea, languidness, and exhaustion in King Sukjong and Queen Inhyun In nutritional terms, Insamsokmieum has higher nutrition density than that of rice porridges (白粥) and has relatively high vitamin and mineral contents. Some nutrients such as leucine and glutamic acid, which are contained in the millet, are also known to help alleviate these symptoms. Whereas there have been studies on the efficacy and types of diet during the Joseon Dynasty, studies regarding nutrition characteristics are lacking. This study will demonstrate the superiority of dietary treatments of the Joseon Dynasty and their potential for application to modern nutrition.

  • This study was, based on traditional know-how indigenous to Korea, to systemize the knowledge on how to improve health by dining, and to make the best of it statistically. For this purpose, the knowledge in the Sikryo-chanryo(食療纂要), in Korean pronunciation and Siglyochan-yo in Chinese characters, which is an old text referring to diet therapy peculiar to Korea, was compiled into a database and analyzed statistically. Data processing was used as a 'Relational data model'. In addition, we have used nine data table to express diet therapy peculiar to Korea in the Siglyochan-yo. The software used for data construction was Microsoft Access 2014. As a result, the Sikryo-chanryo database, which can provide information on both disease treatment by food, medicines, and gourmet ingredients applicable to every kind of symptom, as well as the names of disease, was set up at in a PC interface. By employing the 'Relational data model', we can replace researching in the conventional method by employing the database.

  • The late Goryeo and Early Joseon period marks the development of Hyang-yak medicine in medical history in Korea. There have been not a few outcomes in organizing Hyang-yak medicine through the hitherto research works, but there has hardly any attempt to view the medicine in the late Goryeo and Early Joseon period from a different standpoint besides Hyang-yak. This writer, in the middle of doing research on 'Book for Alimentotherapy' named "Sikuisikgam", came to know that not a few parts of this book were quoted in a large volume of "Biebaekyobang" in the late Goryeo, "Hyangyakjipseongbang" which compiled the early Joseon Hyangyak medicine, "Uibangyuchi" which wrapped up the medical knowledge in East Asia before the early Ming Dynasty, and "Sikryochangyo" which was a representative book for alimentotherapy in the early period of Joseon Dynasty. The reason that the representative medical books written in the period of Late Goryeo and Early Joseon thought much of the knowledge contained in "Sikuisikgam" is that they showed a great concern for prevention and treatment of diseases through alimentotherapy. When we say that Hyangyak medicine, which has provided the Late Goryeo and Early Joseon medicine, bases its standard on 'Regionality' and 'Properties of Medicinal ingredients', then alimentotherapy puts its focus on a 'Remedial method' itself. As for food, they might have given priority to the food that was easy to get nearby, so there is no way for alimentotherapy but to have the realm which is overlapped with Hyangyak medicine in some measure, That's the very reason why alimentotherapy has remained inseparate from Hyangyak medicine. Through 'Alimentotherapy' and Late Goryeo and Early Joseon medical books, this writer thinks that it might be possible for us to take a view of the Late Goryeo and Early Joseon not only from the perspective of Hyangyak medicine but also from a new perspective of so-called alimentotherapy.
