Distribution of Vascular Plants in Geommasan (Yeongyang, Gyeongbuk) (검마산(경북 영양) 관속식물의 분포)

  • This study was carried out to clarify the distribution of vascular plants and their usefulness in Geommasan of Gyeongbuk (1,017m, $36^{\circ}\;42^{'}\;30.0^{"}{\sim}36^{\circ}\;45^{'}\; 30.1^{"}N,\;129^{\circ}\;12^{'}\;30.0^{"}{\sim}129^{\circ}\;18^{'}\; 00.0^{"}E$). The vascular plants collected 11 times (from April 2004 to October 2006) were consisted of total 513 taxa; 91 families, 318 genera, 424 species, 3 subspecies, 73 varieties and 13 forms. Among them, edible, medicinal, industrial, ornamental and unknown of usefulness plants were 243 taxa, 307 taxa, 122 taxa, 85 taxa, 77 taxa, respectively. Korean endemic plants of this area were 11 taxa, and Law-protected plants by Ministry of Environment were 4 taxa, The naturalized plants were 21 taxa, therefore naturalized ratio was 4.1%, and Urban index 7.5%.

A Survey of Viral Diseases of Proso Millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) and Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) in South Korea (국내 기장 및 수수의 바이러스병 발생 조사)

  • Throughout year 2015 to 2016, 101 proso millet and 200 sorghum samples were collected from five provinces in South Korea. The samples were subjected to paired-end RNA sequencing and further analyzed by RT-PCR. The results indicated that Rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV) was detected from sorghum collected in Gyeongsang province. The other four viruses, including RBSDV, Rice stripe virus (RSV), Barley virus G (BVG), and Cereal yellow dwarf virus (CYDV), were detected from proso millet. Among four viruses, both RSV and RBSDV were identified high frequency from proso millet collected from Gyeongsang province. Otherwise, BVG was nearly equally identified from five provinces, suggesting that the virus was supposedly widespread nationwide. RBSDV was first identified from both proso millet and sorghum in South Korea. The other virus annotated CYDV identified proso millet was shown to have relatively low identities compared to CYDV previously reported, suggesting that the virus might be new member of Polerovirus.

Analysis of Soil Fungal Community Related to Rhododendron mucronulatum in Biseul Mountain County Park, South Korea (우리나라 비슬산군립공원 진달래나무(Rhododendron mucronulatum)와 관련된 토양 진균 군집의 pyrosequencing 분석)

  • Researching the soil fungal community is important to understand the interaction between fungi and living plants. However, too few studies have examined the soil fungal community and their interactions with plants. Rhododendron mucronulatum, commonly known as Korean rosebay, is an important forest resource that has aesthetic, ecological, and potential pharmacological values. We used a pyrosequencing method to analyze the characteristics of fungal communities from R. mucronulatum soil samples from Biseul mountain county park, which is one of the famous places for large R. mucronulatum colonies in South Korea. We collected soil core samples in February and August at three sites in the Biseul Mountain County Park, taking into consideration the regional and seasonal conditions. We obtained 454,157 validated reads after pyrosequencing all six samples. The fungal communities from the first observation spot in August had the richest species diversity among the samples. Basidiomycota, Ascomycota, and Mortierellomycota were major phyla in the samples. Agaricales_f, Mortierellaceae, and Clavariaceae were major families in the samples. The genus Mortierella was the most dominant in all six samples. Overall, 19 genera could be associated with R. mucronulatum. Sample 1 had 109 genera in sample 1, sample 2 had 111 genera, and sample 3 had 112 genera that were uniquely identified. The samples collected in August had 28 identified genera, that existed only in summer samples, indicating a weather effect. This study can be used as basic research to understand the relationship between soil fungi and plants.

${\delta}^{13}C$ Evidence for the Importance of Local Benthic Producers to Fish Nutrition in the Inner Bay Systems in the Southern Coast of Korea (${\delta}^{13}C$ 분석에 의한 남해 연안 내만역 어류 영양원으로써 저서생산의 중요성 평가)

  • Stable carbon isotope analysis was used to investigate the autotrophic carbon sources supporting fisheries in three coastal bay systems of the southern coast of Korea. Carbon isotope ratios (${\delta}^{13}C$) of 31 fish species were analysed and compared with those of a range of potential primary food sources [e.g., seagrass (Zostera marina), seagrass epiphytes, benthic microalgae, macroalgae, marine particulate organic matter (marine POM), marsh plant (Phragmites australis) and terrestrial POM]. ${\delta}^{13}C$ values (range, -16.2${\sim}$-8.3‰) of fishes from the coastal embayment systems were overlapped with those of seagrass (-8.3${\pm}$1.9‰), seagrass epiphytes (-12.4${\pm}$0.6‰), benthic microalgae (-15.4${\pm}$1.6‰) and macroalgae (-16.0${\pm}$1.8‰). In addition, fishes (-12.9${\pm}$1.5‰) from the study area had distinctly higher ${\delta}^{13}C$ values compared to those collected in offshore sites (-17.3${\pm}$0.8‰) of the southern sea of Korea and Nakdong River (-23.2${\pm}$1.6‰). This result indicates that carbon supporting fish communities of these coastal bay systems is mainly derived from the local benthic producers.

New Record for Alien Plant, Urtica dioica L. (Urticaceae) in Korea (한반도 미기록 외래식물: 서양쐐기풀)

  • We found Urtica dioica L., an unrecorded alien plant, in the Han River basin of Korea. U. dioica is considered to be native to Europe, much of temperate Asia and western North Africa. This plant has been introduced to many other parts of the world. In Particularly, it reported as an invasive species from East Asia (Japan), Oceania and South America. This species is distinguished from related Korean taxa of the genus by its unisexual flower and dioecious plant species. In the Neighbor-Joining tree, U. dioica samples from the Han River Park (Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul) and Yangjaecheon Stream (Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul) clustered into a clade consisting of a U. dioica s.s. Here, we provide a precise description, illustrations, a key to the related taxa, and photographs of its habitat.

A taxonomical examination of Trapa japonica and T. bispinosa based on nut characters (열매 특성에 의한 한국산 마름과 큰마름에 대한 분류학적 검토)

  • We examined the sixteen quantitative characters of Trapa and conducted principal component analysis for T. japonica Flerow and T. bispinosa Roxb. in South Korea. Trapa bispinosa has been recorded as 'Ma-reum (T. japonica Flerow)' in the Korean flora, but this taxon is distinct from T. japonica in terms of width, thickness and upper horns of its nuts. Principal component analysis (PCA) confirms the morphologically distinct status for the two species. We suggest the common name 'Keun-ma-reum' for Trapa bispinosa to the Korean flora.

An Unrecorded Species from Korean Flora: Vallisneria spinulosa (Hydrocharitaceae) (한국산 미기록 식물: 낙동나사말(자라풀과))

  • We report Vallisneria spinulosa S. Z. Yan (Hydrocharitaceae) as an unrecorded species from the flora of Korea. This aquatic vascular plant occurs in reservoirs, streams, and ditches at Changnyeong, Changwon, and Gimhae which belong to Nakdong river basin. Vallisneria spinulosa is distinguishable from V. natans (Lour.) Hara already known to Korean flora by the presence of turion and hairs at base of stamen, adnation between pistil and staminodia, the number of stamen, and shape of fruit and seed. V. spinulosa is similar to V. desnseserrulata Makino in the viewpoint of distribution (Japan and southern China), but V. spinulosa has three to five epidermal wings on the surface of seed.

The first record of Gentianopsis (Gentianaceae) in Korea: G. contorta (Royle) Ma (한반도 미기록 식물: 꼬인용담(용담과))

  • We confirmed an unrecorded taxon under the genus Gentianopsis (Gentianaceae) into Gentianopsis contorta (Royle) Ma, which was collected from Geumdaebong, Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do in the central part of Korean peninsula. This taxon was known to be distributed mainly Himalayan mountainous area such as India, Nepal and Pakistan, and also growing in China and Japan. In this study, we carried out species description based on the morphological characters, and gave the new Korean name, 'Kko-in-yong-dam' by the characteristics of floral morphology. In addition, some fine figures on several important characters and key to the this and relative species were provided.

A new record for the Korean flora: Sparganium fallax Graebn.(Sparganiaceae) (우리나라 미기록 식물: 남흑삼릉(흑삼릉과))

  • Sparganium fallax Graebn. (Sparganiaceae), a species previously unrecorded for the Korean flora, was collected in a broad-leaved, evergreen swamp in the lowlands of eastern Jeju Island. This species was known to be distributed south of Jeju Island including Japan, South China, Taiwan, India, Indonesia (Sumatra), Myanmar, and New Guinea. S. fallax differ from others of Sparganiaceae in Korea by having keeled leaves, 4-7 staminate heads, relatively wide separation between each pistillate head and usually sessile or lowest pedunculated pistillate heads. The somatic chromosome number was 2n = 2x = 30 and the size of chromosomes was very small (0.69 to $2.19{\mu}m$).

  • Nervilia nipponica Makino (Orchidaceae), a genus and species previously unrecorded for the Korean flora, was collected in the deciduous forests of Mt. Halla, Jeju Island. This species was known to be distributed mainly from tropical to subtropical regions of Taiwan and Japan. Genus Nervilia is distinguished from other genera of tribe Nervilieae (Orchidaceae) by having only a single, plicate leaf which develops and senesces before flowering shoots appear, stems unbranched, two pollinia, and sometimes lacking a viscidium.
