Characteristic Study for Methyl-mercaptain Removal by an Essential Oil (식물추출물을 이용한 메틸멀캡탄 제거 특성 연구)

  • Increasing public concerns over odors and air regulations necessitates the remediation of a wide range of odorous compounds for industrial purpose. Currently, wet scrubbing technique by neutralization using essential oils is utilized to treat methyl mercaptan odor. The chemical analysis is performed to analyze the composition of an essential oil by GC-MS. The objective of this study is to clarify the possibility of the neutralization of odors sprayed in the fixed bed and determine the removal efficiencies in the misty aerosol by different input odor concentration. It is found that methyl mercaptan is significantly removed in the wet scrubber, and their removal efficiency of methyl mercaptan is obtained by 98%.

Study of Toxic Gas Removal Characteristics by Chemical Analysis of Essential Oil using SPME Method (SPME법을 이용한 식물정유 성분분석을 통한 유해가스 제거 특성연구)

  • This paper was investigated to clarify the possibility of ammonia gas removal by essential oil. First of all, the chemical analysis was peformed to analyze the composition of an essential oil by GC-MS. The monoterpenes in an essential oil react with ammonia by neutralization and their reaction mechanism was elucidated. Based on their chemical neutralized reaction, the removal efficiencies of ammonia gas were studied to derive the optimal conditions in the scrubber tower such as optimal temperature and pH. The experimental result shows that the removal efficiency of ammonia gas was achieved over 98 % by the misty aerosol dispersion of scrubber tower.

Toxicity of Plant Essential Oils and Their Spray Formulations against the Citrus Flatid Planthopper Metcalfa pruinosa Say (Hemiptera: Flatidae)

  • The insecticidal activity of 124 plant essential oils and control efficacy of six experimental spray formulations (SF) containing 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10% of the selected oils was examined against both nymph and adult of the citrus flatid planthopper, Metcalfa pruinosa using direct contact applications (leaf dipping and spray). Reponses varied according to dose (1,000 and 500 mg/L). When exposed at 1,000 mg/L for 24 h using leaf dipping assay, 19 essential oils showed strong mortality (100%) among 124 essential oils screened. At 500 mg/L, 100% mortality was observed in cinnamon technical, cinnamon green leaf, cinnamon #500, cassia tree, citronella java and pennyroyal followed by origanum, thyme white, grapefruit, savory, fennel sweet, aniseed and cinnamon bark showed considerable mortality (93.3-80%) against nymphs of M. pruinosa. The moderate mortality (73.3-60%) was found in thyme red, tagetes, calamus, lemoneucalptus and geranium. Oils applied as SF-10% sprays provided 100 % mortality against adult M. pruinosa. One hundred mortalities were achieved in cinnamon technical at >SF-0.5 formulation, in cinnamon #500, cinnamon green leaf and penny royal at >SF-2.5. To reduce the level of highly toxic synthetic insecticides in the agricultural environment, the active essential oils as potential larvicides could be provided as an alternative to control M. pruinosa populations.

Toxicity and Repellent Activity of Plant Essential Oils and Their Blending Effects Against Two Spotted Spider Mites, Tetranychus urticae Koch (식물정유 및 혼합물의 점박이응애(Tetranychus urticae Koch)에 대한 살비 및 기피활성)

  • Miticidal and repellent activity of twenty plant essential oils against the adults of two spotted spider mites, Tetranychus urticae, were examined. Sandal wood oil was the most potent one in mortality, whereas clary sage oil exhibited the greatest repellent activity. On those twenty essential oils tested, no apparent correlation between toxicity and repellency was observed. When the most active oils were blended, the combinations tend to exhibit antagonistic interactions in both toxicity and repellent activity. The chemical compositions of sandal wood oil and clary sage oil were identified via GC/MS analyses, and the major constituents of sandal wood oils were sesquiterpene compounds, whereas the major ones for clary sage oil were monoterpenes. Among the major components in clary sage oil, linalyl acetate was not only the most abundant constituent, but also the most responsible one for its repellent activity.

  • 본 연구는 국내 자생 방향성 식물의 자원발굴과 증식, DB 구축을 위하여 수행되었다. 배초향은 꿀풀과에 속하는 다년생 식물로 대표적인 한국의 방향식물이다. 한의학에서는 배초향의 지상부를 곽향이라 하여 음식으로 인한 체증, 오한, 복통 등을 치료하는 한약재로 사용되며 그 밖의 관상용, 밀원용, 식품용, 향신료 등 다양한 산업제품의 원료로 사용되고 있다. 배초향의 유전형질 특성 및 정유성분 조사를 위하여 국립농업유전자원센터로부터 배초향 종자(30자원)를 분양받아 발아시킨 후 시험연구포장에 증식하였다. 증식된 배초향을 대상으로 개화기, 식물 및 꽃의 색, 잎의 모양 등 개체별 형질특성을 조사하였으며 일정시기에 일시 수확하여 정유추출 후 GC/MS 분석을 통하여 정유의 화학성분을 분석하였다. 배초향의 개화시기는 6월 10일 경~7월 29일 경이었고 초장은 약 80cm~186cm이었다. 잎의 모양은 30자원 중 광난형 12자원, 피침형 10자원, 난형 8자원의 분포였고 식물체의 색은 green과 red-purple 계열이 각각 22자원과 8자원이었다. 배초향 꽃의 색깔은 RHS Colour chart 참조하여 149P 10P 8/4, 129B 10P 7/8, 37V 2.5RP 4/12의 색으로 분류하여 조사하였다. 129B 10P 7/8에 해당하는 자원이 18자원으로 가장 많은 분포를 차지하였다. 배초향의 정유성분 분석 결과, 정유수율은 0.11%~0.44%이었고 정유성분은 estragole, methyl eugenol, menthone 등이었다. 배초향의 주성분으로 알려진 estragole은 30자원 중 13자원의 주요정유성분인 것으로 나타났다.

Role of Plant Extracts to Remove Hydrogen Sulfide in the Air-Lifter Reactor (Air-lift 반응기내 황화수소제거시 식물정유추출물의 역할)

  • This paper reports on the experimental investigation carried out to evaluate the physical optimal conditions in the absorption column to remove odorous hydrogen sulfide gas. Hydrogen sulfide gas, as a highly undesirable contaminant, is most widely emitted from environmental treatment facilities. The absorbent mixed with natural second metabolites extracted from conifer trees and chemical absorbent of 2-aminoethanol was applied to remove it via chemical neutralization. The absorbent of natural second metabolites was achieved by a removal efficiency of 20-40% by itself depending on the treatment conditions, but the complex absorbent mixed with 0.1% amine chemical provides the removal efficiency of 98%. The optimal removal efficiencies have been examined against the two major parameters of temperature and pH. This study shows that the aqueous solution by natural second metabolites can be used as an appropriate absorbent in the column absorbed for the removal of hydrogen sulfide gas.

  • 국화과에 속하는 Solidago속 식물의 정유가 꽃, 잎, 줄기등 이 식물 전 기관에 분포되어있는 이생세포간근에 함유되어 있다는 사실에 기초를 두고, 선기능을 가진 세포들이 일반세포에 비해 강한 dehydrogenase활성을 나타낸다는 사실을 이용하여 2,3,4-triphenyltetrazoliumchloride를 써서 분비강주변의 세포들의 선기능을 조직화학적으로 증명하였다.

  • 최근 환경과 건강에 대한 관심이 증대되면서, 천연 섬유를 소재로 사용한 최종 제품 역시 고급화 및 고기능화되고 있는 추세이며 섬유항균가공분야에 있어서도 천연 추출물을 이용한 항균가공이 주목을 받고 있다. 현재 항균가공에 사용되고 있는 항균제는 일반적으로 합성항균제를 사용하고 있고 이는 거의 대부분 자극성 화합물로써 인체에 잠재적 유해요인이 될 수 있고 제조 및 가공과정에서 환경오염을 유발시키는 문제점도 발생되고 있다. 반면 천연추출물을 사용할 경우 합성물질에 비해 포름알데히드 검출 등의 인체 안정성의 불안이 적어 건강차원에서 그 인식이 점차 증대되고 있는 추세이다. 천연항균물질에는 chitosan이나 식물에서 추출된 천연항균물질 등이 있는데 특히 식물에서 추출된 천연항균물질은 피톤치드(phytoncide)라고 표현되고 있으며 이는 수목들이 해충이나 미생물 등으로부터 자기방어를 위해 공기 중으로 발산하는 방향성의 항생물질을 뜻하는 말이다. 본 연구에서는 식물 중에서 피톤치드 정유의 함량이 많다고 알려진 측백나무과의 편백나무 정유를 이용하였으며 편백나무 정유가 식물성 천연 오일형태이므로 가공 처리 시 물과 계면이 발생되기 때문에 HLB(Hydrophilic Lipophlic Balance) 조건에 따른 최적 유화조건을 선정하였으며 편백나무 정유를 이용한 면직물의 항균 기능 부여를 위한 시험으로 편백나무 정유 처리 농도에 따른 항균성을 평가해 보고자 하였다. 실험 결과 편백나무 정유는 HLB 15이상 계면활성제 사용 시 물에 용해성이 좋고 안정된 에멀젼 상태를 보였으며 제조된 편백나무 정유 가공액 5%이상 처리 시 Staphylococcus aureus과 Klebsiella pneumoniae의 99.9% 정균감소율을 나타내었다.

Effects of dietary essential oils on growth performance and cholesterol metabolism in chickens

  • Dietary antibiotics at low, subtherapeutic levels have been shown to improve growth performance in farm animals. However, there is a trend to look for alternatives to dietary antibiotics, due to occurrence of antibiotic-resistance bacteria. The present review explored the essential oils as the possible alternative to dietary antibiotics. The antimicrobial activities of essential oils originating from plants have been well documented while their toxicological effects are seen only at very high doses. Hypocholesterolemic effect has been reported in chickens. Essential oils may stimulate the digestion process. In conclusion, dietary essential oils may be used as alternatives to antibiotics, but whether their effects on growth performance are a consequence of antimicrobial activity needs to be studied further.

  • 국화과 식물 Solidago canadensis L.의 정유성분을 분석하였다. 특히 이 식물의 정유성분은 80% 이상이 C와 H로만 구성된 순수한 탄화수소(Hydrocarbon)화합물들인데 이것은 극성이 거의 같아서 일반적인 분석방법으로는 그 성분들의 분리가 어려운바, 최근 개발된 $AgNO_3$로 impregnation시킨 TLC 및 preparative gaschromatography와 spinningband를 이용한 micro분획증류등의 방법으로 분석 비교하였다.
