We interpreted the seismic signal characteristics from crosswell seismic tomography in the underground cavity like abandoned mines. The first arrival time delay and amplitude attenuation showed clearly at the low velocity zone of cavity and fracture. Also ray density decreased by detour of raypath. As a result of the amplitude spectrum analysis of fresh rock and low velocity zone, there were no noticeable differences of the amplitude up to about 1000Hz frequency, but indicated that the one passed around cavity decreased about 7dB at 2000Hz, and 20dB at 3000Hz. It was possible to compare the signal characteristics between two media by extracting the signal data from the fresh rock zone and the underground cavity through the seismic crosswell tomography.
To clarify the distribution of joints and fracture zones in the Cheongju granitic mass, we analyzed drill-core and geophysical well-logging data obtained at two boreholes located 30 m from each other. Lithological properties were investigated from the drill-core data and the samples were classified based on the rock mass rating (RMR) and on rock quality designation (RQD). Subsurface discontinuities within soft and hard rocks were examined by geophysical well-logging and cross-hole seismic tomography. The velocity structures constructed from seismic tomography are well correlated with the profile of bedrock depth, previously mapped from a seismic refraction survey. Dynamic elastic moduli, obtained from full waveform sonic and ${\gamma}-{\gamma}$ logging, were interrelated with P-wave velocities to investigate the dynamic properties of the rock mass. Compared with the correlation graph between elastic moduli and velocities for hard rock at borehole BH-1, the correlation points for BH-2 data showed a wide scatter. These scattered points reflect the greater abundance of joints and fractures near borehole BH-2. This interpretation is supported by observations by acoustic televiewer (ATV) and optical televiewer (OTV) image loggings.

This paper demonstrates the feasibility of using shallow S-wave, high-resolution seismic reflection surveys to characterize geological structure and stratigraphy of basement rocks for civil engineering purposes. S-wave seismic reflections from depths less than 20 m were recorded along the top of steep readout slopes. Seismic reflection data were recorded using a standard CDP acquisition method with a 24-channel seismograph and a sledge-hammer SH-wave source. The data were acquired using a split-spread source-receiver geometry with a 2 m shot-and-receiver interval, and then were processed to enhance S/N ratio of the data, to improve resolvable power of the seismic section, and to get velocity information of the basement rock. The final seismic reflection profiles using the CDP technique has imaged surfaces as shallow as less than 1m and resolved beds as thin as 1m. The migrated reflection sections possess sufficient quality to correlate the prominent reflection events to the bedding planes and faults identified on the readout outcrops. Similar S-wave reflection surveys could also be used to produce the necessary details of a geological structure of shallow bedrocks to pinpoint optimum locations for monitor wells of civil engineering purposes.
Seismic geotomography method was performed to verify rock-filled settlement and its stability in No.38+0 profile and No.40+0 profile. The velocity distributions of geotomography method expressed the quantitative value of the ground conditions. The rock-filled layer and in-situ sediments layer are clearly divided on the basis of seismic velocity 2100 m/sec which is derived from the results of seismic geotomography and boring. Current rock-filled settlement conditions are somewhat different from designed settlement estimation line. Seismic geotomography represents current settlement conditions as a quantitative analysis.
3D seismic travel-time tomography algorithm baled on Fresnel volume was developed and its feasibility was investigated by the numerical experiments. To testify the field applicability of the developed algorithm, frequency characteristics and way coverage of the crossholel seismic raw data were investigated and 3D velocity tomogram cube with about 8m spatial resolution was obtained. When compared this 3D velocity cube with the conventional 2D ray tomogram, two results were matched well. We concluded that 3D seismic tomography algorithm developed in this study has enough potential to the field application.

The geophysical methods have an advantage for investigating the wide area with low cost, and thus the application of these methods has been increased. The objective of this paper estimates the characteristics of alluvium through the geophysical methods including elastic wave, electrical resistivity and ground penetration radar. And the standard penetration test is also carried out for verifying the geophysical data with comparison. The sources of elastic wave method are divided into hammer and sissy and the electrical resistivity method is applied with different sizes, shapes and arrays of electrode for deciding the effective way. The center frequency is determined to be 270 MHz for considering the characteristics of soil. The results of ground penetration radar are also compared with those of standard penetration test. The high resolution shows when the source is a sissy in elastic wave method, however, the water level is not identified. In the electrical resistivity method, the non-polarizable electrode and schlumberger array show highly reliable data and the resolution of ground penetration radar is low. Thus, the results of this study are widely applied for determining the appropriate method when investigating the characteristics of alluvium.
EZTOMO is a crosswell seismic tomography software system. The system has capability of event picking, raytracing, inversion, error analysis, and visualization of the processing results. Waveform of the first arrival signal has been utilized to select the event of the first motion, and uncertainty measured in estimation of the first breaks has been utilized to improve the inversion process.

In this study, we investigated the geologic structure of the basement and overlying sediments of the construction site of the dinosaur egg fossil museum in Hwasung, Gyeonggi Province through refraction seismology, drilling, and downward seismic velocity measurements in the drill holes. The construction site ($350{\times}750\;m^2$) is located in the reclaimed area south of Sihwa Lake, Gojeong-ri. About 6,950 m of seismic refraction data consisting of 11 lines were acquired using a sledge hammer source. Drilling to the basement was performed at five sites. Sediment samples from drilling were analysed for grain-size distribution and age dating. At two drill holes, seismic velocity was measured with depth using a hammer as a seismic source. The geological structure of the study area consists of, from top to bottom, a tidal flat layer (5 ~ 12 m thick), a weathered soil layer (2 ~ 8 m thick), and the basement. The basement is interpreted as Cretaceous sedimentary rocks that tend to be shallow eastward. The volume of the tidal flat sediments and weathered soil in the study area is estimated as $1.4{\times}10^6\;m^3$, weighing $3.5{\times}10^6$ tons. The rate of sea level rise since 8,000 yrs BP is estimated to be 0.1 ~ 0.15 cm/yr.
Recently, exploration and development of oil sands are thriving due to high oil price. Because oil sands reservoir usually exists as a thin layer, multicomponent VSP, which has the advantage of the high-resolution around the borehole, is more effective than surface seismic survey in exploring oil sand reservoir. In addition, prestack phase-screen migration is effective for multicomponent seismic data because it is based on an one-way wave equation. In this study, we examined the applicability of the prestack phase-screen migration for multicomponent RVSP data to image the thin oil sand reservoir. As a preprocessing tool, we presented a method for separating P-wave and PS-wave from multicomponent RVSP data by using incidence angle and rotation matrix. To verify it, we have applied the developed wavefield separation method to synthetic data obtained from the velocity model including a horizontal layer and dipping layers. Also, we compared the migrated image by using P-wave with that by using PS-wave. As a result, the PS-wave migrated image has higher resolution and wide coverage than P-wave migrated image. Finally, we have applied the prestack phase-screen migration to the synthetic data from the velocity model simulating oil sand reservoir in Canada. The results show that the PS-wave migrated image describe the top and bottom boundaries of the thin oil sand reservoir more clearly than the P-wave migrated image.
In order to estimate the anisotropy of the medium, we deployed a series of 120-sources in a borehole, and simultaneously recorded 3-component seismic data at 5 locations on the surface. We have tried to estimate the directional velocities by comparing the first arrivals at different receivers. For that purpose, the receiver statics must be corrected prior to pick the first arrivals. However, in an IVSP with a limited number of receiver points, it may not possible to estimate a reliable receiver statics, therefore, instead of using individual first arrival times, we tried to estimate the move-out velocity at each records. From this analysis, we have found that there exists a measurable amount of difference in directional velocities, and confirmed that the velocity anisotropy agrees with the results of the previous studies conducted in this area.
