The cameras generating 360 VR image are too expensive to be used publically. To overcome this problem, we propose a way to use smart phones instead of VR camera, where more than 100 pictures are taken by smart phone and are stitched into a 360 VR image. In this scenario, when moving objects are in some of the pictures, the stitched 360 VR image has various degradations, for example, ghost effect and mis-aligning. In this paper, we proposed an algorithm to modify the seam finding algorithms, where the saliency map in ROI is generated to check whether the pixel belongs to visually salient objects or not. Various simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is effective to increase the quality of the generated 360 VR image.
Seam finding algorithm is one of the most important techniques to construct the high quality 360 VR image. We found that some degradations, such as ghost effect, are generated when the conventional seam finding algorithms (for examples, Voronoi algorithm, Dynamic Programming algorithm, Graph Cut algorithm) are applied, because those make the inefficient masks which cross the body of main objects. In this paper, we proposed an advanced seam finding algorithm providing the efficient masks which go through background region, instead of the body of objects. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional techniques in the viewpoint of the quality of the stitched image.

This paper proposes an efficient data representation of stereo images using edge-based mesh optimization. Mash-based two dimensional warping for stereo images mainly depends on the performance of a node selection and a disparity estimation of selected nodes. Therefore, the proposed method first of all constructs the feature map which consists of both strong edges and boundary lines of objects for node selection and then generates a grid-based mesh structure using initial nodes. The displacement of each nodal position is iteratively estimated by minimizing the predicted errors between target image and predicted image after two dimensional warping for local area. Generally, iterative two dimensional warping for optimized nodal position required a high time complexity. To overcome this problem, we assume that input stereo images are only horizontal disparity and that optimal nodal position is located on the edge include object boundary lines. Therefore, proposed iterative warping method performs searching process to find optimal nodal position only on edge lines along the horizontal lines. In the experiments, we compare our proposed method with the other mesh-based methods with respect to the quality by using Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) according to the number of nodes. Furthermore, computational complexity for an optimal mesh generation is also estimated. Therefore, we have the results that our proposed method provides an efficient stereo image representation not only fast optimal mesh generation but also decreasing of quality deterioration in spite of a small number of nodes through our experiments.
The social media data and the broadcasting data related to onion as well as agri-food consumer panel data were collected and investigated if the amount of money spent to purchase onion in year 2014 when onion price plunged latest were correlated with the frequencies of onion-related keywords in the social media data and the broadcasting programs because onion price in year 2018 is expected to plunge due to overproduction and there has been needs to analyze impacts of social media and broadcasting program on onion purchase in the previous similar events, and identify potential factors that can promote onion consumption in advance. What we identified from our study include a) broadcasting news programs mentioning words "onion," were correlated with onion purchase with 3 - 6 weeks in advance; b) broadcasting entertainment programs mentioning words "onion and health," were correlated with onion purchase with 11 weeks in advance; c) blog mentioning words "onion and efficacy," were correlated with onion purchase with 5 weeks in advance. Our study provided a case on how social media and broadcasting programs could be analyzed for their effects on consumer purchase behavior using big data collection and analysis in the field of agriculture. We propose to use the findings from the study may be applied to promote onion consumption.
In stereoscopic or multi-view three dimensional display systems, the synthesis of intermediate sequences is inevitably needed to assure look-around capability and continuous motion parallax so that it could enhance comfortable 3D perception. The quadtree-based disparity estimation is one of the most remarkable methods for synthesis of Intermediate sequences due to the simplicity of its algorithm and hardware implementation. In this paper, we propose two ideas in order to reduce the annoying flicker at the object boundaries of synthesized intermediate sequences by quadtree-based disparity estimation. First, new split-scheme provides more consistent auadtree-splitting during the disparity estimation. Secondly, adaptive temporal smoothing using correlation between present frame and previous one relieves error of disparity estimation. Two proposed Ideas are tested by using several stereoscopic sequences, and the annoying flickering is remarkably reduced by them.
Recently in the area-based stereo matching field, Adaptive Support-Weight (ASW) method that weights matching cost adaptively according to the luminance intensity and the geometric difference shows promising matching performance. However, ASW requires more computational cost than other matching algorithms do and its real-time implementation becomes impractical. By applying Integral Histogram technique after approximating to the Bilateral filter equation, the computational time of ASW can be restricted in constant time regardless of the support window size. However, Integral Histogram technique causes loss of the matching accuracy during approximation process of the original ASW equation. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm that maintains the ASW algorithm's matching accuracy while reducing the computational costs. In the proposed algorithm, we propose Sub-Block method that groups the pixels within the support area. We also propose the method adjusting the disparity search range depending on edge information. The proposed technique reduces the calculation time efficiently while improving the matching accuracy.
MPEG-I is actively working on standardization on the immersive video coding which provides up to 6 degree of freedom (6DoF) in terms of viewpoint. In a virtual space of 3DoF+, which is defined as an extension of 360 with motion parallax, looking at the scene from another viewpoint (another position in space) requires rendering an additional viewpoint using multiple videos included in the 3DoF+ video. In the MPEG-I Visual workgroup, efficient coding methods for 3DoF+ video are being studied, and they released Test Model for Immersive Video (TMIV) recently. This paper presents a patch packing method which packs the patches into atlases efficiently for improving coding efficiency of 3DoF+ video in TMIV. The proposed method improves the reconstructed view quality with reduced coding artifacts by introducing guardbands between patches in the atlas.
Current binocular stereoscopic displays cause visual discomfort when objects with large disparities are present in the scene. One solution for improving visual comfort is synthetic depth-of-field processing, which simulates the characteristics of a human visual system. With this technique, visual comfort is improved by blurring portions of the background and/or foreground in the scene. However, this technique has the drawback of degrading overall image quality because the blurring is typically applied to both left and right images. To alleviate the visual discomfort, we propose a novel disparity-based asymmetrical filtering technique. Proposed technique applies the filtering to the image of one eye only, and controls the blur level according to the disparity information between stereoscopic images. We investigate the effects of this technique on stereoscopic video by measuring visual comfort and apparent sharpness. Our results indicate that disparity-based asymmetrical filtering can improve visual comfort of stereoscopic video while it maintains apparent sharpness if unfixated regions with large disparities are blurred under the appropriate filtering condition.
The methods developed to measure visual fatigue so far are quite few and lack of validity, and more importantly, they do not figure out the complex properties of the visual fatigue. The purpose of the research was to analyze the factors comprising the visual fatigue and to develop the method to measure it validly. The results are summarized as follows. First, we found that the 3D visual fatigue was comprised of four independent factors (visual stress, eye pain, body pain and image blurring factors). Second, we developed 29 items that measure four factors of 3D visual fatigue. Finally, the watching duration and binocular disparities affected the visual fatigue as had been expected. These results imply that the developed method does measure the three dimensional fatigue validly.
