  • This paper presents computed results of FEM analysis on the tribological contact behaviors of a primary sealing components of mechanical face seals for a small hydro-power turbine. The FEM computed results present that the contact area between seal rings and seal seats is very important for a good tribological performance such as low friction heating, low wear, high contact normal stress in a primary seal ing components. Based on the FEM computation, model III in which has a small sealing contact area shows low dilatation of primary sealing components, and high contact stress between a seal ring and a 1)seal seat.

  • In this study, the optimized design profiles between a seal ring and a seal seat of contacting seal units has been proposed based on the FEM computed results. The maximum temperatures, the thermal distortions in axial and radial directions, and maximum contact normal stresses between a seal ring and a seal seat have been analyzed for various contact sealing profiles. The FEM computed results present that the contact area between seal rings and seal seats is very important for a good tribological performance such as low friction heating, low wear, high contact normal stress in a primary sealing components. The seal surface model III in which has a small sealing contact area shows low dilatation of primary sealing components, and high contact stress between a seal ring and a seal seat. This model with small contact surface of a seal ring produces high friction heating and contact stress. But the model III produces very small deformations of contacting sealing surface because of high convection heat transfer by cooling water circulation around the seal ring surface. Thus, the analysis results recommend a short width of a primary sealing unit rather than a big width of contact surfaces of contacting seal units for reducing a leakage and axial deformation of primary seal components.

  • This study has been conducted in order to propose Eco-friendly and High functional waterproofing technology available for structure by verifying application and performance of water proofing material(s) in purpose of making effective use of reclaimed rubber. As s result of 12 months evaluation, stable performance for water pressure and lateral pressure of $0.3N/mm^2$ were confirmed. Also, as the time elapsed, the amount of water absorption and adhesion performance showed only a slight difference(+0.05g, $-0.1Nmm^2$) as well, which in turn confirmed that waterproofing performance remains stable. Studies show that it is expected to expand recycling technology of natural rubber by applying reclaimed rubber on construction waterproofing field, and to hold a technical superiority by using eco-friendly material in construction waterproofing market throughout active application of these types of research.

  • In this study, observations of oil leakage samples taken from the actual site were performed to identify the causes of the oil leakage phenomenon. As a result, the separation of the material components was determined as the main cause of the oil leakage phenomenon based on the changes in the surface conditions, and verification of this was conducted. The evaluation results confirmed that the filler component of the asphalt mastic subsided with the lapse of the settling time, and that the difference ratio of the filler contents of the upper and lower specimens was up to 23.8% after day 28. Based on these results, a hypothesis on the oil leakage mechanism of asphalt mastic was established, and then modeling of the entire process of oil leakage was performed.
