  • Recently, urban retrofit and extension, development of new buildings and facilities, and construction of underground structures like subway tunnels in urban areas give rise to significance of site investigation at urban areas. However, ambient electric noises, traffic vibrations, embedded objects work as obstacles to high-quality and accuracy in site investigation at urban areas. In this paper, a new technique called the pseudo-DC resistivity survey (in brief, PDC-R) was proposed to minimize the adverse effect of ambient electrical noises in resistivity survey. PDC-R technique utilizes an AC current with frequency range of 0.1 to 1.0 Hz rather than DC current, which is used for conventional resistivity survey. The motivation of using low-frequency AC current is to avoid 60-Hz components or its multiples in the resistivity survey which ambient noises are mostly composed of. The implementation of PDC-R technique also included the parametric study on skin effect, frequency effect and current-level effect, which led to the determination of optimal values of frequency and current level for PDC-R survey. The reliability and feasibility of PDC-R technique was verified through field tests, accompanied by the comparison with DC resistivity survey and CapSASW tests.

  • Shotcrete is an important primary support for tunnelling in rock. The quality control of shotcrete is a core issue in the safe construction and maintenance of tunnels. Although shotcrete may be applied well initially onto excavated rock surfaces, it is affected by blasting, rock deformation and shrinkage and can debond from the excavated surface, causing problems such as corrosion, buckling, fracturing and the creation of internal voids. This study suggests an effective non-destructive evaluation method of the tunnel shotcrete bonding state applied onto hard rocks using the impact-echo (IE) method and ground penetration radar (GPR). To verify previous numerical simulation results, experimental study carried out. Generally, the bonding state of shotcrete can be classified into void, debonded, and fully bonded. In the laboratory, three different bonding conditions were modeled. The signals obtained from the experimental IE tests were analyzed at the time domain, frequency domain, and time-frequency domain (i.e., the Short- Time Fourier transform). For all cases in the analyses, the experimental test results were in good agreement with the previous numerical simulation results, verifying this approach. Both the numerical and experimental results suggest that the bonding state of shotcrete can be evaluated through changes in the resonance frequency and geometric damping ratio in a frequency domain analysis, and through changes in the contour shape and correlation coefficient in a time-frequency analysis: as the bonding state worsens in hard rock condition, the autospectral density increases, the geometric damping ratio decreases, and the contour shape in the time-frequency domain has a long tail parallel to the time axis. The correlation coefficient can be effectively applied for a quantitative evaluation of bonding state of tunnel shotcrete. Finally, the bonding state of shotcrete can be successfully evaluated based on the process suggested in this study.

  • In this study, the behavior of Pile-Bent structure with varying diameters subjected to lateral loads were evaluated by a load transfer approach. An analytical method based on the beam-column model and nonlinear load transfer curve method was proposed to consider material non-linearity (elastic, yielding) and P-${\Delta}$ effect. For an effective analysis of behavior Pile-Bent structure, the bending moment and fracture lateral load of material were evaluated. And special attention was given to lateral behavior of Pile-Bent structures depending on reinforcing effect of materials and ground conditions. Based on the parametric study, it is shown that the maximum bending moment is located within a depth (plastic hinge) approximately 1~3D (D: pile diameter) below ground surface when material non-linearity and P-${\Delta}$ effect are considered. And distribution of the lateral deflections and bending moments on a pile are highly influenced by the effect of yielding. It is also found that this method considering material yielding behavior and P-${\Delta}$ effect can be effectively used to perform the preliminary design of Pile-bent structures.

  • In this study, the optimal method for injection of neutralizer to restraint the leakage of acid drainage in embankment structure composed of pyrite rocks is proposed. Finite Element Analysis was performed to examine the seepage effect caused by injection of neutralizer into the embankment structure. The diameter of the neutralizer injection hole was selected as 50cm, the interval space of injection ranged from 1m to 4m and the injecting pressure ranged from 100kPa to 220 kPa were applied for the numerical analysis. According to the analysis results, the saturation time of the whole embankment structure was shown to be fast at a relatively low injecting pressure in the case of injecting interval space of 1.0m and injecting pressure of 130kPa and in the case of injecting interval space of 2.0m and injecting pressure of 160kPa. When the interval space of injection for saturation of whole embankment structure is selected as 3m, various injection pressures can be applied from 130kPa to 190kPa, and the saturation time of whole embankment is similar regardless of the injection pressure. Therefore, the optimal method for injection of neutralizer considering economic efficiency was selected as injecting interval space of 3.0m and injection pressure of 130kPa.

  • The aging of plant structures due to industrialization in the 1970s has increased the demand for blast demolition. While blasting can reduce exposure to environmental pollution by shortening the demolition period, improper blasting design and construction plans pose significant safety risks. Thus, it is vital to consider optimal blasting demolition conditions and other factors through collapse behavior simulation. This study utilizes a 3-D combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM) code-based 3-D DFPA to simulate the collapse of a chimney structure in a thermal power plant in Seocheon, South Korea. The collapse behavior from the numerical simulation is compared to the actual structure collapse, and the numerical simulation result presents good agreement with the actual building demolition. Additionally, various numerical simulations have been conducted on the chimney models to analyze the impact of the duct size in the pre-weakening area. The no-duct, duct, and double-area duct models were compared in terms of crack pattern and history of Z-axis displacement. The findings show that the elapse-time for demolition decreases as the area of the duct increases, causing collapse to occur quickly by increasing the load-bearing area.

  • Despite recent modifications to building structural standards emphasizing the seismic stability of building foundations, the current design focus remains solely on vertical support, resulting in insufficient consideration of horizontal loads during earthquakes. In this study, we evaluated the dynamic behavior of inclined tripod micropiles (ITMP), which provide additional seismic resistance against horizontal and vertical loads during earthquakes. A comparison of the dynamic characteristics, such as acceleration, displacement, bending moment, and axial force, of ITMP with a 15° installation angle and normal vertical micropiles with a 0° installation angle was performed using dynamic centrifuge model tests. Results show that under moderate seismic loads, the proposed ITMP exhibited lower acceleration responses than the vertical micropiles. However, when subjected to a long-period strong seismic excitation, such as sine (2 Hz), ITMP showed greater responses than the vertical micropiles in terms of acceleration and settlement. These results indicate that the use of ITMP reduces the amplif ication of short-period (high-f requency) contents compared with the use of vertical micropiles. Therefore, ITMP can be used to enhance seismic performance of structures.

  • Reckless development of the underground by rapid urbanization causes inspection delay on replacement of existing structure and installation new facilities. However, frequent accidents occur due to deviation in construction design planned by inaccurate location information of underground structure. Meanwhile, the electrical resistivity survey, knowns as non-destructive method, is based on the difference in the electric potential of electrodes to measure the electrical resistance of ground. This method is significantly advanced with multi-electrode and deep learning for analyzing strata. However, there is no study to quantitatively assess change in electrical resistance according to geometric conditions of structures. This study evaluates changes in electrical resistance through geometric parameters of electrodes and structure. Firstly, electrical resistance numerical module is developed using generalized mesh occurring minimal errors between theoretical and numerical resistance values. Then, changes in resistances are quantitatively compared on geometric parameters including burial depth, diameter of structure, and distance electrode and structure under steady current condition. The results show that higher electrical resistance is measured for shallow depth, larger size, and proximity to the electrode. Additionally, electric potential and current density distributions are analyzed to discuss the measured electrical resistance around the terminal electrode and structure.

  • The absorption coefficients of the materials used in a 1:50 scale model multipurpose hall were measured based on ISO 354 and related laws. The shape and materials for the scale model were evaluated based on reflective surfaces, variable acoustic elements and sound-absorbing quality (125Hz-1kHz average) of seats. The measured average absorption coefficients of audience seats, audience and orchestra were 0.64, 0.74 and 0,45, respectively, which were simulated with the combination of wood, absorption materials and foam board. Various mounting methods for absorption curtain and banner were considered according to the installation methods. The average absorption coefficient was measured as 0.42, 0.47 and 0.45 in the conditions of Type A mounting, E mounting with 0.9 m backing air cavity, and Type G mounting which is suspended at the ceiling, respectively. It was confirmed that the absorption coefficient was increased at low frequency by backing air gap. The finishing material of stage house was an absorption material covered with thin fabric, which aimed average absorption coefficient of 0.68 by using fiber glass board. Each part of the real materials was compared with those of 1:50 scale model and it was found that the absorption characteristics of both cases were similar.

  • A significant cause of fall or overturning accidents in the construction industry, including landscaping construction and management, is work at heights using portable ladders. Portable ladders are classified as A-type or triangular support ladders depending on the number of supporting leg and support conditions. The tripod mobile ladder, which supports itself with only three supporting legs, is unstable and more prone to overturning compared to the A type ladders. Therefore, using the specifications of the tripod mobile ladder and the stability regulations of EN131-Part 7, overturning and resistance moment calculation formulas were derived for all directions in which overturning could occur. The moments calculated using these equations, and the overturning stability in each direction were evaluated. According to the calculation results, although there are differences depending on the direction, most are unstable for overturning at 8 or more steps. Based on these results, this study proposed measures to increase the moment of resistance by changing the weight, depth, and width, and using outriggers to ensure stability against the overturning of ladder. However, when changing the specifications of these measures, the size increases are excessive and the applicability is insufficient. On the other hand, outriggers are an applicable measure as they can ensure stability against overturning with only a minimum expansion length.
