In this paper, experimental study performed on steel-pipe connections for structural members of a greenhouse is presented. By those experiments performed, bending moment, deformation and stress distribution of specimens were investigated under four point bending test. The bending performance according to connection method using pin and the stretching is also investigated. The results of bending performance of the no connection specimen were compared to those of other connection specimens. The pin and stretching connection specimens showed lower banding performance than the no connection specimen. The stretching connection method was relatively higher bending performance than the pin connection specimens. According to the results, we proposed the connection method with good bending performance that can be applied to steel-pipe connection in greenhouse.
Vertical cutoff walls such as steel pipe sheet piles (SPSPs) have been commonly applied for the construction of the offshore waste landfill site. Because the SPSPs are sequentially installed by connecting their joints to those of adjacent piles, their mechanical stability should be ensured against the inherent external forces on the sea. The objective of this study is to evaluate the structural performances of the newly developed types of SPSP joint compared with those of other joint types. The problems of the traditional SPSP joints are investigated, and an advanced joint shape of SPSP, which is named double H with L-T (DHLT) joint, are designed for improving the constructability and maintenance. Full-scale models of the DHLT joint are manufactured, and then its joint areas are filled with grout material. After 28 days of curing time, compressive and tensile strength tests were performed on the joint models and the test results were compared with those of the traditional joints. Experimental results show that the structural capacities of the DHLT joint models are lower than those of traditional joints due to the influence of grout and steel members. In the cases of the compressive strength test, especially, bending occurs on steel H-beam with no distinct cracks in grout due to the asymmetrical structure of joint which has no reaction force. This study shows that the performance of the SPSP joint can be improved by considering the influence factors on the structural capacities estimated by the experimental tests.
The aim of this study is to construct a machine vision monitoring system for an automatic visual inspection of weld joint in steel structure. An image processing algorithm for a visual weld defects detection on weld bead is developed using the intensity image. An optic system for getting four intensity images was set as a fixed camera position and four different illumination directions. The input images were thresholded and segmented after a suitable preprocessing and the features of each region were defined and calculated. The features were used in the detection and the classification of the visual weld defects. It is confirmed that the developed algorithm can detect weld defects that could not be detected by previously developed techniques. The recognized results were evaluated and compared to expert inspectors' results.
Bridges in common use are expected to have more varieties of load in their connected members and bolts than in construction. Faults in connection members or bolts occur so often according to the time flow. One of the purposes of this study is to find out the behavior and structural features of high-tension bolted joints with faults that are very difficult and cost much to find out through experimentation with finite element analysis. Another purpose of this study is to provide sufficient data, estimated experimental results, and the scheme of the test plate for an economical experimental study in the future. Surveys of bridges with a variety of faults and statistical classifications of their faults were performed, as was a finite element analysis of the internal stress and the sliding behavior of standard and defective bridge models. The finite element analysis of the internal stress was performed according to the interval of the bolt, the thickness of the plate, the distance of the edge, the diameter of the bolt, and the expansion of the construction. Furthermore, the analysis explained the sliding behavior of high-tension bolt joints and showed the geometric non-linear against the large deformation, and the boundary non-linear against the non-linear in the contact surface, including the material non-linear, to best explain the exceeding of the yield stress by sliding. A normally bolted high-tension bolt joint and deduction of bolt tension were also analyzed with the finite element analysis of bridge-sliding behavior.
A precast concrete deck system is considered an effective alternative in terms of its rapid construction and quality assurance than cast-in-place concrete deck. In precast concrete deck system, structural performance and serviceability are mostly determined by the connection methods between the precast decks. This research proposes more improved precast deck system with asymmetric ribbed connection details improving the disadvantage of previous precast deck system such as difficulties in assembling precast decks. And in this precast deck system, a separate form is not required at the site because partition wall of the precast decks serves as a form when placing non-shrinkage mortar in the connection part of the precast decks. Therefore, rapid construction is possible. Flexural performance is verified through load tests considering main parameter such as rib length in the precast deck connection. From the test results, it can be inferred that the development of the rebar and prevention of adhesion failure in the partition wall of the precast deck system are important factors in securing the flexural performance. Although the structural performance of the precast deck system with asymmetric connection details is gradually reduced as the rib length in the precast deck connection increases, the proposed precast deck system shows sufficient flexural performance and can be applied to the connection part of precast decks effectively.

The construction of foundation piles for buildings and bridges is changing from pile driving to an injected precast pile method. The goal is to minimize environmental damage, noise pollution, and complaints from neighboring residents. However, it is necessary to develop economic piles that are optimized for precasting by a centrifugal method in terms of both the material and structural system. A reinforced joint method is proposed for reinforced concrete piles (RC piles) manufactured by centrifugal casting. A previous study concluded that the structural performance of the current joint system for RC piles could be improved by using a reinforced joint composed of extended circular band plates and studs. In this study, the structural performance of such a joint was validated experimentally by bending and shear strength measurements. The proposed joint reinforcement method showed adequate structural performance in terms of bending and shear strength. The overall load-deflection behavior is close to that of a structure without joints, so it is expected that the behavior and performance of the design can be reliably reflected in site structures.

Due to the increasing number of deteriorated bridges worldwide, the importance of maintenance and replacement of existing bridges are being emphasized. Cast-in-place concrete deck which is mainly applied to deck replacement of existing bridges have problems such as deterioration concerns by initial crack, labor cost increase, difficulties of maintenance and replacement, construction time increase, and indirect cost increase by traffic congestion. On the contrary, a precast concrete deck is considered as an effective alternative because of its quality assurance and accelerated construction. The connection method ensuring the required strength and durability is especially important, because the connection part of the precast concrete deck is vulnerable to cracks and leakage. Therefore, this study proposes precast bridge decks with ribbed connection which are more improved than existing bridge deck joints, and flexural performance is verified through various parameter tests.

Whilst it is common to construct high-rise buildings and long-span structures in the construction and building industry, there might be a number of problems such as excessive re-bars arrangement, deterioration of concrete quality, unnecessary quantity take-off and so forth. As these types of buildings and structures are getting more popular, it is widespread to apply high-strength materials such as high-strength concrete and re-bars to sustain durability and stability. This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of the high-strength reinforcing bars on the underground parking in a rigid-frame structure. In this study, the reinforcing bars with different yield strength were applied to corroborate the usefulness and practicability of the high-strength re-bars on the underground parking in a rigid-frame structure. The test results show that the quantity of reinforcement bars is lowered, as the yield strength of the re-bars are grown in general. However, the quantity of reinforcement bars on the development and splice has a tendency to increase slightly. Despite of the increase of the development and splice, the total quantity of reinforcing bars was reduced since the increasing ration of the pure quantity is higher than the development and splice. Base on the test results, it would be possible to achieve the reduction of reinforcing bars arrangement and lowering the amount of work to be done during a construction phase. Moreover, the reduced amount of bar arrangement will make it possible to improve workability and constructability of reinforced concrete structures. Ultimately, we will be able to attain improved quality and efficiency of construction using reinforced concrete.
