  • The purpose of this study is to consider the interaction between surface water and groundwater in basin scale by developing TANK_GS model. The soil moisture structure of tank model with 3 tanks is improved to simulate the appropriate stream-aquifer interactions. Maximum likelihood method is applied to calibrate parameters with variance functions to deal with heteroscedasticity of residuals. The parameters of improved TANK_GS model and variance function are simultaneously estimated by Simulated Annealing method, a global optimization technique. The results of TANK-GE are compared to those of the SWMM-GE model which had been developed to consider the stream-aquifer interactions. The new TANK_GS model and SWMM-GE model are applied to Gapcheon basin, which belongs to Geum River basin. TANK_GS model showed better model performance compared to the original TANK model and characterized the relationship of stream-aquifer interactions as satisfactorily as the SWMM-GE model. The sustainable groundwater yield can be estimated for the regional water resources planning using the TANK_GS model

  • The purpose of this study is to predict the spatio-temporal changes in land uses and to evaluate land-based pollutant loads in the future under Total Water Pollution Load Management System using CLUE-S model. For these ends, sensitive parameters of conversion elasticities in CLUE-S model were calibrated and these calibrated parameters of conversion elasticities, level II land cover map of year 2009, and 7 driving factors of land use changes were used in predicting future land uses in 2002 with two scenarios(Scenario 1: non area restriction, Scenario 2: area restriction). This projected land use map of 2020 was used to estimate land-based pollutant loads. It was expected that urban areas will increase in 2020 from both scenarios 1 and 2. In Scenario 1, urban areas are expected to increase within greenbelt areas and deforest would be expected. Under Scenario 2, these phenomena were not expected. Also the results of estimation of BOD and TP pollutant loads, the BOD difference between scenarios 1 and 2 was 719 kg/day in urban areas and TP difference was 17.60 kg/day in urban areas. As shown in this study, it was found that the CLUE-S model can be useful in future pollutant load estimations because of its capability of projecting future land uses considering various socio-economic driving factors and area-restriction factors, compared with conventionally used land use prediction model.

  • We accessed the climate change effects on the distributions of warm-evergreen broad-leaved trees (shorten to warm-evergreens below) in the Korean Peninsula (KP). For this, we first selected nine warm-evergreens with the northern distribution limits at mid-coastal areas of KP and climate variables, coldest month mean temperature and coldest quarter precipitation, known to be important for warm-evergreens growth and survival. Next, species distribution models (SDMs) were constructed with generalized additive model (GAM) algorithm for each warm-evergreen. SDMs projected the potential geographical distributions of warm evergreens under current and future climate conditions in associations with land uses. The nine species were categorized into three groups (mid-coastal, southwest-coastal, and southeast-inland) based on their current spatial patterns. The effects of climate change and land uses on the distributions depend on the current spatial patterns. As considering land uses, the potential current habitats of all warm-evergreens decrease over 60%, showing the highest reduction rate for the Kyungsang-inland group. SDMs forecasted the expansion of potential habitats for all warm-evergreens under climate changes projected for 2050 and 2070. However, the expansion patterns were different among three groups. The spatial patterns of projected coldest quarter precipitation in 2050 and 2070 could account for such differences.

  • Recently, much studies for providing mobile users with suitable and useful content services, LBS(Location Based Service) corresponding to the change of users' location, are actively going on. First and foremost, this is basically owing to the progress of location management technologies such as GPS, mobile communication technology and the spread of personal devices like PDA and the cellular phones. Besides, the research scope of LBS has been changed from vehicle tracking and navigation services to intelligent and personalized services considering the changing information of conditions or environment where the users' are located. For example, it inputs the information such as heavy traffic, pollution, and accidents. The query languages which effectively search the stored vehicle and environment information have been studied depending on the increase of the information utilization. However, most of existing moving object query languages are not enough to provide a recommendation service for a user, because they can not be tested and evaluated in real world and did not consider changed environment information. In order to retrieve not only a vehicle location and environment condition but also use them, we suggest a moving object query language for recommendation service and implement a moving object query process system for supporting a query language. It can process a nearest neighbor query for recommendation service which considers various attributes such as a vehicle's location and direction, environment information. It can be applied to location based service application which utilizes the recommended factors based on environmental conditions.

  • An accurate prediction of inflow water temperature is essentially required for real-time simulation and analysis of rainfall-induced turbidity 烈os in a reservoir. In this study, water temperature data were collected at every hour during the flood season of 2004 at the upstream of Daecheong Reservoir to justify its characteristics during rainfall event and model development. A significant drop of river water temperature by 5 to $10^{\circ}C$ was observed during rainfall events, and resulted in the development of density flow regimes in the reservoir by elevating the inflow density by 1.2 to 2.6 kg/$m^3$ Two types of statistical river water temperature models, a logistic model(DLG) and regression models(DMR-1, DMR-2, DMR-3) were developed using the field data. All models are shown to reasonably replicate the effect of rainfall events on the water temperature drop, but the regression models that include average daily air temperature, dew point temperature, and river flow as independent variables showed better predictive performance than DLG model that uses a logistic function to determine the air to water relation.

  • Micropiles are widely used for foundation underpinning to enhance bearing capacity and reduce settlement of existing foundation. In this study, the main objective is to evaluate underpinning performance of a newly developed micropile called waveform micropile for foundation underpinning during vertical extension. Finite element method (FEM) was used to evaluate the underpinning performance of waveform micropile in terms of load-settlement response of underpinned foundation and load sharing behavior. For comparison, underpinning effects of three conventional micropiles with different lengths were also discussed in this study. Numerical results of load-settlement response for single pile demonstrated that bearing capacity and axial stiffness of waveform micropiles were higher than those of conventional micropiles because of the effect of shear keys of waveform micropiles. When additional loads 20 %, which is according to design loads of the vertical extension, were applied to the underpinned foundation, load sharing capacity of waveform micropile was 40 % higher than conventional micropile at the same size. The waveform micropile also showed better underpinning performance than the conventional micropile of length 1~1.5 times of waveform micropile.

  • In this study, the horizontal and vertical structure of wind speed and wind direction were analyzed at the origin of migratory insect pests in China. Wind rose analysis was carried out using the Land-Atmosphere Modeling Package (LAMP) - WRF data, which has the spatiotemporal resolution of about 20 km and 1 hour intervals. Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) was employed for backward trajectory analysis between South Korea and Southeastern China with Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS). The research interest date is July 16, when rice planthopper and leafhopper were observed at the same time. In order to examine where a jet stream occurs in the vertical in source regions and South Korea during the period (July 8 to July 17 in 2021), three-dimensional wind information was extracted and analyzed using the east-west, north-south, and vertical component wind data of the LAM P. The vertical distribution of wind showed that the wind changed in favor of the inflow of migratory insect pests during the period. As a result of analyzing the wind rose, about 30% or more of the wind at a point close to South Korea was classified into the low-level jet stream. In addition, majority of the wind directions for the low-level jet streams (rather than high-level jet streams) at the five origin sites were heading toward South Korea and even Japan, and this was supported by the HYSPLIT-based backward trajectory analysis.

  • A various technology of remote sensing and image analysis are applied to study landscape changes and their influencing factors in stream corridors. We developed a method to detect landscape changes over time by calculating the optical index using multispectral images taken from satellites at various time points, calculating the threshold to delineate the boundaries of water bodies, and creating binarized maps into land and water areas. This method was applied to the upstream reach of the weirs in the Geumgang River to track changes in the sandbar formed by the opening of the weir gate. First, we collected multispectral images with a resolution of 10 m × 10 m taken from the Sentinel-2 satellite at various times before and after the opening of the dam in the Geumgang River. The normalized difference water index (NDWI) was calculated using the green light and near-infrared bands from the collected images. The Otsu's threshold of NDWI calculated to delineate the boundary of the water body ranged from -0.0573 to 0.1367. The boundary of the water area determined by remote sensing matched the boundary in the actual image. A map binarized into water and land areas was created using NDWI and the Otsu's threshold. According to these results of the developed method, it was estimated that a total of 379.7 ha of new sandbar was formed by opening the three weir floodgates from 2017 to 2021 in the longitudinal range from Baekje Weir to Daecheong Dam on the Geumgang River. The landscape detection method developed in this study is evaluated as a useful method that can obtain objective results with few resources over a wide spatial and temporal range.

  • Objective: This study examined the effectiveness of Korean medicine treatments in two patients with Parkinson's disease complaining of discomfort stemming from postural instability and gait disturbance (PIGD). Methods: Two patients were treated for 3 months. They visited the clinic once a week for the first month and thereafter once every 2 weeks. The Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and a three-dimensional gait analysis were performed at the first visit and at 1, 2, and 3 months thereafter. Results: In Case 1, gait speed, stride length, and swing phase increased. Double support decreased until 2 months after treatment but increased slightly after 3 months. Among the kinematic parameters, tilt and rotation increased. The total UPDRS Part III score decreased from 51 points to 29 points after 3 months of treatment. In Case 2, gait speed, stride length, and swing phase increased, but double support decreased. Among the kinematic parameters, tilt, rotation, and obliquity decreased. The total UPDRS Part III score decreased from 11 points to 7 points after 3 months of treatment. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medicine can be an effective treatment for patients with Parkinson's disease who experience discomfort due to PIGD.
