Maximum Control Force of Velocity-dependent Damping Devices Using Response Estimation Models (응답예측모델을 이용한 속도의존형 감쇠장치의 최대제어력 산정)

  • In this study, for estimating responses of a controlled structure and determining the maximum control force of velocity-dependent damping devices, three estimation models such as Fourier envelope convex model, probability model, and Newmark design spectrum are used. For this purpose, a procedure is proposed for estimating actual velocity using pseudo-velocity and this procedure considers the effects of damping ratio increased by the damping device. Time history results indicate that actual velocity should be used for estimating accurate maximum control force of damping device and Newmark design spectrum modified by the proposed equation gives the best estimation results for over all period structures.

Effect of N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Glutamate Receptor Antagonist, Memantine, on Alcohol Intake in C57BL/6 Mice (N-methyl-D-aspartate glutamate 수용체 길항제 memantine의 투여가 C57BL/6형 생쥐의 알코올 섭취량에 미치는 영향)

  • Previous studies reported that the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor is related to alcohol dependence in terms of developing withdrawal or tolerance, however, it is controversial whether NMDA receptor antagonists are effective in preventing relapse in alcohol-dependent patients or not. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of memantine, an NMDA receptor antagonist, on alcohol intake in C57BL/6 mice, which prefer drinking hereditarily. Using limited access procedures in C57BL/6 mice in the state of alcohol dependence, vehicle, naltrexone 1.0 mg/kg or, memantine 5, 25, or 50 mg/kg i.p. was administered respectively for twelve days. Medication effects on 2-hours alcohol, 22-hour water, and 24-hour food intake and body weight were studied. Using repeated measure ANOVA, the naltrexone 1 mg/kg, memantine 5, 25, or 50 mg/kg, and vehicle groups showed significant medication by day interaction (naltrexone, df=4, F=11.827, p<0.01, memantine 5 mg/kg, df=4, F=7.999, p<0.01; memantine 25 mg/kg, df=4, F=6.199, p<0.05; memantine 50 mg/kg, df=4, F=10.522, p<0.01) in 2-hour alcohol intake. In 3 memantine groups, there was no significant medication by day interaction with the vehicle group in 22-hour water intake, 24-hour food intake, or body weight. The naltrexone and vehicle groups showed significant medication by day interaction in body weight, but not in 22-hour water or 24-hour food intake. From these results, it is suggested that memantine treatment can affect alcohol intake in mice. Therefore, it is possible that a pure NMDA receptor antagonist is effective in preventing relapse in alcohol-dependent patients.

Diazoxide Suppresses Mitochondria-dependent Apoptotic Signaling in Endothelial Cells Exposed to High Glucose Media (고농도 당에 노출된 혈관 내피세포에서 미토콘드리아 의존성 세포사멸 기작 활성화에 미치는 diazoxide의 억제 효과)

  • In the present study, we examined the effect of mitochondrial K+ channel opener diazoxide on the mitochondria-dependent apoptotic signaling in endothelial cells exposed to high glucose (HG) media. Endothelial cells derived from human umbilical veins were exposed to HG media containing 30 mM glucose, and the degree of apoptotic cell death associated with activation of the mitochondria-dependent apoptotic signaling pathway was determined. Exposure to HG media was seen to enhance apoptotic cell death in a time-dependent manner. In these cells, activation of caspases 3, 8, and 9 was observed, and while caspase-3 and -9 inhibitors suppressed the HG-induced apoptotic cell death, a caspase-8 inhibitor did not. The HG-treated cells exhibited disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential, formation of permeability transition pores, and cytosolic release of cytochrome c. Subsequently, diazoxide was seen to attenuate the HG-induced apoptotic cell death; caspase-9 activation was suppressed but caspase 8 was not. Diazoxide also suppressed the depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential, the formation of mitochondrial permeability transition pores, and the release of cytochrome c. These effects were significantly inhibited by 5-hydroxydecanoate, a selective blocker of ATP-sensitive K+ channels (KATP). The present results demonstrate that diazoxide exhibits a beneficial effect to ameliorate HG-induced endothelial cell apoptosis. Opening the KATP could help preserve the functional integrity of mitochondria and provide an underlying mechanism to suppress HG-triggered apoptotic signaling.

The mediation effect of grip strength trajectory on the association between exercise participation and life satisfaction among couples (중노년기 부부의 운동참여가 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향에 관한 악력 궤적의 매개효과)

  • This study aims to investigate the interdependence of Korean middle and old-aged couples in the association between exercise and life satisfaction through grip strength trajectory. Data were drawn from the nationally representative Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) collected from 2006 to 2016. The sample included couples over 45 years of age in the first wave and participated in all six waves of the survey (Ncouple=1,997). There were three steps for analyses: correlation, parallel latent growth curve model, tests of indirect effects of the mediation paths. Covariates included in the models were husbands and wives' characteristics (age, education, work status, chronic diseases, marital satisfaction, contact frequency with friends or neighbors) and couple's household income. Results showed husbands' and wives' life satisfaction and grip strength were interdependent upon each other. Also, exercise participation of both husbands and wives was associated with both husbands' and wives' life satisfaction via the initial level of grip strength of husbands. Moreover, exercise participation of only husbands was associated with wives' life satisfaction through the initial grip strength of husbands. These results suggest the aging processes of middle and old-aged couples need to be understood in the context of gender dynamics and couple interdependence.

Information Display of Wearable Devices through Sound Feedback of Wearable Computing (웨어러블 컴퓨팅 환경에서 청각 피드백을 통한 웨어러블 기기의 정보 디스플레이)

  • 웨어러블 컴퓨팅의 지속적인 발전과 함께, 이들이 지원하는 기능은 점점 다양화되고 전문화되었다. 하지만 기기의 종류와 기능이 늘어나면서 각 기기의 상태를 확인하는 작업 자체가 복잡하고 불필요한 시간을 소요하기도 한다. 또한 이를 시각 디스플레이에만 의존하면, 디스플레이 크기의 한계와 더불어 시각적인 과부하가 발생할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제를 극복하기 위해 웨어러블 각 기기의 상태정보 피드백으로서 소리를 이용하였다. 실험의 순서는 먼저 시각정보에 더하여 청각정보를 추가적으로 제시하는 방식의 유용성을 검증한 다음, 기기 특정적인 청각 아이콘(Auditory Icon)의 효과를 확인하였다. 청각정보의 유용성을 확인하는 단계에서는 참가자에게 특정 기기의 위치와 그 상태에 관한 정보를 시각 디스플레이를 통해 제시하면서, 조건에 따라 다양한 형태의 청각 디스플레이를 제시하고 기기 및 상태정보 확인에 소요되는 시간을 측정하였다. 시각디스플레이의 방식은 다양하지만, 본 연구에서는 사람의 몸을 나타내는 그림 위에 기기가 장착된 위치를 붉은 점으로 표시하고, 그 상태를 텍스트로 표시하는 방식(실험 1)과 텍스트를 통해 기기의 종류와 상태를 알려주는 방식(실험 2)을 적용하였다. 기기 확인에 소요되는 반응시간을 기록한 실험결과는 시각디스플레이를 통해서만 제시하는 조건보다 시각디스플레이와 청각디스플레이를 동시에 제시하는 조건에서 나은 수행을 보여주며, 정보의 내용이 일정 범위 내에서 구체적으로 제시될 수록 수행이 증가하는 경향을 보여주고 있다. 이어지는 기기 특정적인 청각 아이콘의 효과를 확인하는 단계에서는, 소리의 높낮이를 통해 기기의 위치를 표현하는 대신, 소리만 듣고 기기가 무엇인가를 알려줄 수 있도록, 참가자 평정을 통해 기기 특정적인 청각 아이콘을 선정하고, 이를 상태정보 디스플레이에 추가하였다. 기기의 수와 제시조건은 앞선 실험과 동일하였으며, 역시 기기 및 상태정보 확인에 소요되는 반응시간을 체크하였다. 실험결과는 이전의 실험과 비슷하게 시각과 청각 디스플레이의 중복제시 조건에서 높은 수행을 보였으며, 청각 아이콘의 사용으로 인한 수행의 증가도 확인할 수 있었다. 실험 2에서는 추가적으로 청각 디스플레이의 내용에 대한 주관적인 평정을 실시 하였는데, 기기 특정적인 청각 아이콘은 참가자에게 편의성, 효용성, 적합성, 확신도에서도 높은 점수를 얻었다. 이러한 결과는 청각 피드백을 이용한 정보의 디스플레이는 착용자의 시선을 자유롭게 함으로써 일상생활의 수행을 높이고, 웨어러블 컴퓨터 디스플레이 크기의 제약을 해결하는 방법이 될 수 있는 동시에 주관적인 사용성 측면에서 발전가능성이 있음을 보여준다.

  • We propose two estimating procedures to analyze clustered interval-censored data with an informative cluster size based on a marginal model and investigate their asymptotic properties. One is an extension of Cong et al. (2007) to interval-censored data and the other uses the within-cluster resampling method proposed by Hoffman et al. (2001). Simulation results imply that the proposed estimators have a better performance in terms of bias and coverage rate of true value than an estimator with no adjustment of informative cluster size when the cluster size is related with survival time. Finally, they are applied to lymphatic filariasis data adopted from Williamson et al. (2008).

The Study of Growth and Photoconductive Characterization of $AgInS_2$ Single Crystal Thin Film by Hot Wall Epitaxy (Hot Wall Epitaxy(HWE) 방법에 의한 $AgInS_2$ 단결정 박막 성장과 광전도 특성)

  • 수평 전기로에서 AgInS2 다결정을 합성하여 HWE 방법으로 AgInS2 단결정 박막을 반절연성 GaAs(100) 위에 성장하였다. AgInS2 단결정 박막은 증발원과 기판의 온도를 각각 680℃, 410℃로 성장하였다. 이때 단결정 박막의 결정성이 10 K에서 측정한 광발광 스펙트럼은 597.8 nm(2.0741 eV) 근처에서 엑시톤 방출 스펙트럼이 가장 강하게 나타났으며, 또한 이중결정 X-선 요동곡선(DCRC)의 반폭치(FWHM)도 121 arcsec로 가장 작게 측정되어 최적 성장 조건임을 알 수 있었다. Hall 효과는 van der Pauw 방법에 의해 측정되었으며, 온도에 의존하는 운반자 농도와 이동도는 293 K에서 각각 9.35×1023개/㎥, 2.94×10-2㎡/V·s였다. AgInS2 단결정 박막의 광전류 단파장대 봉우리들로부터 10 K에서 측정된 ΔCr(crystal field splitting)은 0.15eV, ΔSo(spin orbit coupling)는 0.0089 eV였다. 광전도 셀로서 응용성을 알아보기 위해 감도(γ), pc/dc(photocurrent/darkcurrent), 최대허용소비전력(maximum allowable power dissipation: MAPD), 응답시간(response time)등을 측정한 결과, S 증기 분위기에 열처리한 광전도 셀의 경우 γ=0.98, pc/dc=1.02×106, MAPD=312 mW, 오름시간(rise time)=10.4 ms, 내림시간(decay time)=10.8 ms로 가장 좋은 특성을 얻었다.

Antimicrobial Effect of Oregano (Origanum majorana L.) Extract on Food-borne Pathogens (오레가노 추출물이 식중독세균에 대한 항균효과)

  • This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effects of Origanum majorana L. ethanol extract against food-borne pathogens. The antimicrobial activity of Origanum majorana L. extract was determined using a paper disc method. The extract exhibited growth inhibiting activities in a concentration dependent manner on 10 species microorganisms. The extract of Origanum majorana L. showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Salmonella enteritidis. The growth inhibitory effects of Origanum majorana L. extract on food poisoning microorganisms were determined against Salmonella typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes, gram negative and positive bacteria, respectively. The extract of Origanum majorana L. had strong antimicrobial activity against Salmonella typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes at the concentration of $700 mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. At this concentration, the extract of Origanum majorana L. inhibited the growth of Salmonella typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes up to 60 and 36 hours, respectively. The results in the present study demonstrate antimicrobial effects of Origanum majorana L. ethanol extract against food-borne pathogens, suggesting that Origanum majorana L. could be an effective natural antibacterial agent in food.

  • Background: Endotoxin (LPS : lipopolysaccharide), a potent activator of immune system, can induce acute and chronic inflammation through the production of cytokines by a variety of cells, such as monocytes, endothelial cells, lymphocytes, eosinophils, neutrophils and fibroblasts. LPS stimulate the mononucelar cells by two different pathway, the CD14 dependent and independent way, of which the former has been well documented, but not the latter. LPS binds to the LPS-binding protein (LBP), in serum, to make the LPS-LBP complex which interacts with CD14 molecules on the mononuclear cell surface in peripheral blood or is transported to the tissues. In case of high concentration of LPS, LPS can stimulate directly the macrophages without LBP. We investigated to detect the generation of proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 1 (IL-1), IL-6 and TNF-$\alpha$ and fibrogenic cytokine, TGF-$\beta$, by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) after LPS stimulation under serum-free conditions, which lacks LBPs. Methods : PBMC were obtained by centrifugation on Ficoll Hypaque solution of peripheral venous bloods from healthy normal subjects, then stimulated in the presence of LPS (0.1 ${\mu}g/mL$ to 100 ${\mu}g/mL$ ). The activities of IL-1, IL-6, TNF, and TGF-$\beta$ were measured by bioassaies using cytokines - dependent proliferating or inhibiting cell lines. The cellular sources producing the cytokines was investigated by immunohistochemical stains and in situ hybridization. Results : PBMC started to produce IL-6, TNF-$\alpha$ and TGF-$\beta$ in 1 hr, 4 hrs and 8hrs, respectively, after LPS stimulation. The production of IL-6, TNF-$\alpha$ and TGF-$\beta$ continuously increased 96 hrs after stimulation of LPS. The amount of production was 19.8 ng/ml of IL-6 by $10^5$ PBMC, 4.1 ng/mL of TNF by $10^6$ PBMC and 34.4 pg/mL of TGF-$\beta$ by $2{\times}10^6$ PBMC. The immunoreactivity to IL-6, TNF-$\alpha$ and TGF-$\beta$ were detected on monocytes in LPS-stimulated PBMC. Some of lymphocytes showed positive immunoreactivity to TGF-$\beta$. Double immunohistochemical stain showed that IL-1$\beta$, IL-6, TNF-$\alpha$ expression was not associated with CD14 postivity on monocytes. IL-1$\beta$, IL-6, TNF-$\alpha$ and TGF-$\beta$mRNA expression were same as observed in immunoreactivity for each cytokines. Conclusion: When monocytes are stimulated with LPS under serum-free conditions, IL-6 and TNF-$\alpha$ are secreted in early stage of inflammation. In contrast, the secretion of TGF-$\beta$ arise in the late stages and that is maintained after 96 hrs. The main cells releasing IL-1$\beta$, IL-6, TNF-$\alpha$ and TGF-$\beta$ are monocytes, but also lymphocytes can secret TGF-$\beta$.

Analysis for Chloride Penetration in Concrete under Deicing Agent using Multi Layer Diffusion (다층구조확산을 고려한 제설제에 노출된 콘크리트의 염화물 해석)

  • Concrete is cost-benefit and high-durable construction material, however durability problem can be caused due to steel corrosion under chloride attack. Recently deicing salt has been widely spread in snowing season, which accelerates micro-cracks and scaling in surface concrete and the melted deicing salt causes corrosion in embedded steel. The previous governing equation of Fick's 2nd Law cannot evaluate the deteriorated surface concrete so that another technique is needed for the surface effect. This paper presents chloride penetration analysis technique for concrete subjected to deicing salt utilizing multi-layer diffusion model and time-dependent diffusion behavior. For the work, field investigation results of concrete pavement exposed deicing salt for 18 years are adopted. Through reverse analysis, deteriorated depth and increased diffusion coefficient in the depth are evaluated, which shows 12.5~15.0mm of deteriorated depth and increased diffusion coefficient by 2.0 times. The proposed technique can be effectively applied to concrete with two different diffusion coefficients considering enhanced or deteriorated surface conditions.
