  • In general, the high quality audio coding(HQAC) has the structure of the convertional data compression techniques combined with moodels of human perception. The primary auditory characteristic applied to HQAC is the masking effect in the spectral domain. Therefore spectral techniques such as the subband coding or the transform coding are widely used[1][2]. However no effort has yet been made to apply the temporal masking effect and temporal redundancy removing method in HQAC. The audio data compression method proposed in this paper eliminates statistical and perceptual redundancies in both temporal and spectral domain. Transformed audio signal is divided into packets, which consist of 6 frames. A packet contains 1536 samples($256{\times}6$) :nd redundancies in packet reside in both temporal and spectral domain. Both redundancies are elminated at the same time in each packet. The psychoacoustic model has been improved to give more delicate results by taking into account temporal masking as well as fine spectral masking. For quantization, each packet is divided into subblocks designed to have an analogy with the nonlinear critical bands and to reflect the temporal auditory characteristics. Consequently, high quality of reconstructed audio is conserved at low bit-rates.

  • Orthodontic force is a mechanical stress controlling both of tooth movement and skeletal growth. The mechanical stress stimulate bone cells that may exert some influence on bone remodeling. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference in cellular activity depending on mechanical stresses such as compressive and tensile force by determining the alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity. A clonal osteogenic cell line MC3T3-E1 was seeded into a 24-well plate($2{\times}10^4/well$). At the confluent phase, a continuous compressive hydrostatic pressure($25g/cm^2$, $300g/cm^2$) and continuous tensile hydrostatic pressure($-25g/cm^2$, $-300g/cm^2$) were applied for 4, 6, 10, 14, 18, 20 days respectively by a diaphgragm pump. At the end of the stimulation period, cell layers were prepared for ALP activity assay. The ALP activity of the compressive group increased more than that of the tensile group at same force magnitude, whereas the cells responded to a similar pattern regardless of the type of mechanical stress The ALP activity of the compressive and tensile group turned into the level of the control group as the length of time increased. These results indicated that a mechanical stress may be more effective on cellular activity during active cellular proliferation and differentiation periods. The time to achieve maximum ALP activity was delayed as the mechanical stress increased in both the compressive and the tensile group. Accordingly, the magnitude of the stress rather than the type of mechanical stress may have more influence on cellular activity.

  • Maturity method is a non-destructive method for estimating in-place concrete strength as a function of time and temperature. The main objective is to use maturity method determining joint sawing and traffic opening time for whitetopping construction in Korea. Another objective is to investigate the influence of air temperature in the correspondence to slab temperature and maturity value. For determining the joint sawing and traffic opening time, thermachron i-button and strain gage were inserted in the fresh concrete in the slab and a maturity value was calculated at desired times. In-place strength was then estimated from a pre-established relationship between maturity values and compressive strength. The results showed that there are significant differences between the estimated strength obtained from maturity curve and in-place concrete strength. The reasons are that the gain of in-place concrete strength was influenced by several factors in the field such as curing conditions, air temperature, and wind speed etc. Also, the results showed that air temperature had significant influence on slab temperature and maturity value The slopes of maturity curves exponentially decrease as air temperature decreases. This means that maturity value sharply dropped as air temperature decreases.

  • The design criteria of ventilating container is not provided yet in Korea. This caused strength reduction due to the ventilating hole and bad ventilating performance. The purposes of this study were to survey the present situation of ventilating container in Korea, to analyze the strength reduction on the atmosphere condition variation, and to provide the criteria for the optimum design of ventilating container. The ventilating area of container was $1.41{\sim}2.65%$, and strength reduction due to the varied pattern, size and location of ventilating hole was $8.5{\sim}20.2%$. The effect on the strength reduction from the pattern and location of ventilating hole was bigger than that from the ventilating area. Equilibrium arrival time of temperature and relative humidity was shorter as the ventilating area was bigger, and temperature reached to the equilibrium state earlier than the relative humidity. There was no significant difference on the ventilating hole pattern between equilibrium arrival time of temperature and relative humidity and equilibrium arrival temperature and relative humidity if the ventilating area was the same.

  • The compressive strength of a paste composed of a low-calcium Class F fly ash and alkaline activator solutions was investigated. These activator solutions, made with sodium hydroxide, water glass and water, have a very high $OH^-$ concentration. The composition of alkaline activator solution and temperature have been shown to notably influence the development of the compressive strength of the fly ash-cements paste. Compressive strength of 50 MPa could be achieved by curing of the fly ash at $60^{\circ}C$ for 48 hrs or $85^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs. This study presented the optimum mixing ratio of Class F fly ash/sodium hydroxide/water glass as 25:8:2 in weight basis, and activator/fly ash as 0.6/1.0 for high strength paste.

  • Cement Fineness Modulus (CFM) is a method of expressing the distribution of particle sizes of cement in numeric form. If CFM is controlled through crush process of cement without modifying the chemical components or mineral composition of cement, it is judged to be able to produce a cement satisfying various requirements because it is estimated to enable various approaches to cement such as high early strength, moderate heat, low heat cement and so on. Therefore, in this study, as basic research for manufacturing special cement utilizing the controls of CFM, the intention was to review the impacts of CFM on the fundamental properties of concrete. To summarize the result, as mixture characteristics of fresh concrete, ratio of small aggregate and unit quantity were gradually increased, securing greater fluidity, with an increase in CFM, while the amount of AE and SP were reduced gradually. In addition, setting time was delayed as CFM increased. Furthermore, compression strength was relatively high during initial aging as CFM became smaller, but as time passed, compression strength became smaller, and it showed the same level of strength as aging time passed about three years.

  • This paper proposes an efficient face recognition system using phase difference between the face images. We use a Karhunen-Loeve transform for image compression and reconstruction, and obtain the phase difference by using normalized inner product of the two compressed images. The proposed system is rotation and light-invariant due to using the normalized phase difference, and somewhat shift-invariant due to applying the cosine function. The faster recognition than the conventional system and incremental training is possible in the proposed system. Simulations are conducted on the ORL images of 40 persons, in which each person has 10 facial images, and the result shows that the faster recognition than conventional recognizer using convolution network under the same recognition error rate of 8% does.

  • The conventional wavelet-based fractal image coding has the disadvantage that the encoding takes a long time, since each range block finds the best domain in the image. In this Paper, we propose wavelet-based fractal image coding using SAS(Self Affine System) method and multi-scale factor. It consists of the range and domain blocks in DWT(discrete wavelet transform) region. Using SAS method, the proposed method is that the searching process of the domain block is not required, and the range block selects the domain which is relatively located the same position in the upper level. The proposed method can perform a fast encoding by reducing the computational complexity in the encoding process. In order to improve the disadvantage of SAS method which is reduced image qualify, the proposed method is improved image qualify using the different scale factors for each level. As a result, there is not influence on an image quality, the proposed method is enhanced the encoding time and compression ratio, and it is able to the progressive transmission.
