  • This study is about King Kyung-jong's medical history written on "The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Chosun Dynasty". Kyung-jong, the 20th King of Chosun was born in 1688 as a prince and passed away in 1725. When he was prince, his main diseases were some infectious things; for example, smallpox, measles, a sort of malaria, a sort of mumps etc. But the time he was king, his main diseases were related unenergetic(虛證). According to "The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Chosun Dynasty" yak-bang(藥房) records, some informations about his health are different from general knowledges. At first, His father's dead is more related his health than his mother's dead. Second, he was fat, not thin(or desiccate). Third, his infertility was not caused his mother when she died. Fourth, he was regarded as one of psychological healthy person. And not exactly related Kyung-jong's health, in "The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Chosun Dynasty" at Kyung=jong's era, there are some meaningful informations at medical history. One is a doctor who was smallpox specialist. His name is Yoo-Sang, he treated three of Chosun's King very perfectly and his family worked for the royal family's health for 150 years, especially treating smallpox. the other is prescription Gamijojungtang(加味調中湯), Kyung-jong's favorite prescription. • During the Joseon Dynasty, medicinal foods derived from herbs were often more effective than traditional medicines. In addition, the royal family of the Joseon Dynasty believed that foods could be used as various disease treatments. Grain-based foods, especially medicinal porridges (藥粥), were most frequently used for diet therapy. We investigated various types of diet-related diseases suffered by King Injo (仁祖) as well as how the diseases were treated using medicinal porridges based on information in the SeungjeongwonIlgi (承政院日記), which is the daily record of the Royal Secretariat of the Joseon Dynasty. This study examined the SeungjeongwonIlgi of King Injo from his1st year (1623) to 27th year (1649) on a website database maintained by the National Institute of Korean History. According to the records, King Injo suffered from severe diarrhea several times due mainly to febrile disease (煩熱症) as well as abdominal dropsy (脹滿) throughout his entire life. Major diseases affecting King Injo were due to his unhealthy eating habits and psychological factors. For treatment, royal doctors prescribed around 15 medicinal porridges, including nelumbo (seed) porridge (Yeonja-juk), milk porridge (Tarak-juk), Chinese dioscorea porridge (Sanyak-juk), mungbean porridge (Nokdu-juk), perilla seed porridge (Imja-juk), adzuki-bean porridge (Pat-juk), soybean porridge (Kong-juk), Korean-leek porridge (Buchu-juk), and so on, in addition to other medical treatments. Diet therapy using medicinal porridges has been used throughout history since the Joseon Dynasty period. However, knowledge of traditional diet therapy and medicinal porridges used by monarchs in the Joseon Dynasty is insufficient. Therefore, in-depth study is needed to understand the theory of traditional medicinal foods as well as explore their application to patients in the context of modern medicine.

  • Objectives Through the clinical records of Seungjeongwon Ilgi, we reviewed the usage of Bi-Jeung to know the concept of the word and studied therapeutic strategies for managing Bi-Jeung. Methods We investigated the clinical records of the mid-Chosun dynasty containing the key word "Bi" from electronic database (Seungjeongwon Ilgi). Results Of 4,039 records, 249 articles thought to have medicinal value were lastly selected. We subdivided the cases into 13 categories according to time, the connection of contents and the change of associated symptoms. "Bi" was not used alone but used in combination with body parts or other symptoms. Etiological causes of "Bi" involved dampness, phlegm, fire, heat and qi disorders. We suggested that "Bi" of the mid-Chosun dynasty meant a symptom group mainly of sensory impairment and additionally pain or motor disturbance. Among the 22 herbal medicine formulas used, 15 were based on internal medical pattern identifications and 7 were symptomatic treatments. Acupuncture and moxibustion therapy were primarily applied to adjacent acupoints. In addition, External therapies were used together, such as washing therapy, plaster therapy, cupping therapy and thermotherapy. Conclusions "Bi" principally indicated sensory impairment on limbs and the main etiological cause was considered to be dampness. Herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion and external therapies were used to cure Bi-Jeung.

  • The Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation between the Joseon Dynasty and Japan began signing procedures from February 1876. Thus, Busan port became an open port to foreign vessels. This has resulted in Busan port becoming the greatest port in Korea. Because of this, the Superintendent Office (Gamriseo, 監理署) was established at 1883 but was later abolished in 1906. In this thesis, the author explored the opening procedure of Busan Port as an open port, the structure of the positions in the Superintendent Office, and the establishment and abolition, types, and contents of records of Gamriseo that were created or received. Records of the Superintendent Office were classified into diplomatic records, judge records, police records, customs records, administrative records, and the daily records of the institution. Most of the original documents of the Superintendent Office were preserved at the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies while some were published by the National Institute of Korean History and Asiatic Research Institute of Korea University.

  • There are many astronomical records of comets in Korean history books. We collected those of the comet that appeared in the winter of the year 1664. These records were written in Daily Reports of the Royal Observatory on Astronomical Events (星變測候單子), Final Reports of the Royal Observatory on An Astronomical Events (天變謄錄), the Daily Records of the Royal Secretariat of the Joseon Dynasty (承政院日記), and the Chronicle of the Joseon Dynasty (朝鮮王朝實錄). We used the Olbers' method for determination of preliminary orbit of the comet, and compared the result with the previous researches. In the Oblers' method the orbit is assumed to be parabolic (e=1). We obtained the following orbital elements: perifocal distance q=1.07\pm0.008AU, perifocal passage time $T=2329165.50\pm0.72$ days, argument of the perifocus $\omega=318^{\circ}.2\pm2^{\circ}.29$, longitude of ascending node $\Omega=85^{\circ}.23\pm2^{\circ}53(J1665)$(J1665), inclination $i=160^{\circ}.28\pm1^{|circ}.56$.

  • Queen Jangyeol was proclaimed as the second wife of King Injo at the age of 15 in 1638. This study was carried out in order to confirm if Queen Jangyeol actually came down with epilepsy or if she pretended to do. The keywords, "Jungjeon" and "Junggungjeon" were searched among the articles from "Seungjeongwonilgi" in the 16th reign to the 27th reign of King Injo. After that, articles only related to convulsion were selected. The symptom of convulsion and the therapy were analyzed. King Injo gave an order, and royal doctors diagnosed the queen's illness as epilepsy in August in the 23th reign. The Queen was confined in Gyeongdeok in November, and took herbal drugs for treating the epilepsy. After the death of King Injo, she stopped taking the drugs. As the Queen's epilepsy took place consistently more than 1~2 times in a month, it is the generalized tonic-clonic seizure. Also, it is the epilepsy overlapping reiteration with the brain function disorder because the convulsion lasted throughout 1 hour. However, after King Injo died, she lived for long without the brain function disorder. So it is difficult to judge she actually came down with the epilepsy.

  • We present a more complete and accurate catalogue of astronomical records far meteor showers and meteor storms appeared in primary official Korean history books, such as Samguk-sagi, Koryo-sa, Seungjeongwon-ilgi, and Chosen-Wangjo-Sillok. So far the catalogue made by Imoto and Hasegawa in 1958 has been widely used in the international astryonomical society. The catalogue is based on a report by Sekiguchi in 1917 that is mainly based on secondary history books. We observed that the catalogue has a number of errors in either dates or sources of the records. We have thoroughly checked the primary official history books, instead of the secondary ones, in order to make a corrected and extended catalogue. The catalogue contains 25 records of meteor storms, four records of intense meteor-showers, and five records of usual showers in Korean history. We also find that some of those records seem to correspond to some presently active meteor showers such as the Leonids, the Perseids, and the n -Aquarids-Orionids pair. However, a large number of those records do not correspond to suck present showers. This catalogue we obtained can be useful for various astrophysical studies in the future.

  • Medicinal porridge (藥粥) is made by putting rice or grains into a pot and boiling with water until a semi-liquid texture is obtained. Porridge is digested fast and absorbed by the body. Children or elderly people with weak digestive ability can eat it without difficulty. The authors of this literature focused on utilization of mung bean porridge (Nokdu-juk) based on SeungjeongwonIlgi (承政院日記), which is the daily record of the Royal Secretariat of the Joseon Dynasty from 1623 to 1910. Four cases were found. The first case used mungbean for treating fever diseases (熱症), the second as a meal alternative, the third for wound recovery, and the last case described the culture of the joseon dynasty. According to the actual cases in SeungjeongwonIlgi (承政院日記), mung bean porridge (Nokdu-juk) was actively used to lower fever and strengthen the spleen and stomach. When suffering from the after effects of a malignant tumor or serious liver disease (肝病), an infectious disease, or a serious physical wound, people ate mung bean porridge (Nokdu-juk). It is suggested that mung bean porridge (Nokdu-juk) can be used as an alternative food treatment for the current medical field due to the prevalence of pain-killers and psychotropic drug abuse.

  • Earthquake records written in the history documents such as “SeungJeongWon IlKi” and “Chosun Wangjo Shilok” for the earthquakes occurred around the offshore near Yangyang and Samcheok area in June, 1681, have been analyzed to estimate the intensity distribution and epicenters as well as magnitudes. Three consecutive earthquakes were analysed, which occurred near those area on June 12, 17, and 26, 1681. The Main-shock occurred on June 12, 1681 was felt in almost every provinces of Korea while after-shocks occurred on June 17 and 26, 1681, were felt in several provinces restrictively. Although the main-shock was felt in the entire provinces, the real damage had been concentrated in Kangwon province. A block of rock collapsed to fall due to main-shock in the mountain near Samcheok. No other man casualties were reported except a death due to being thrown off a horse by ground shaking in Seoul. Local micro-tsunami seems to be generated at the offshore of Samcheok due to the main-shock. The main-shock seems to be occurred in the offshore between Yangyang and Samcheok (38.0oN and 129.0oE) , the epicenter intensity and magnitude of which is over 8 in MMI and 6½ in Ms, respectively.
