Statistical nature of the dry and wet periods defined in the time series of annual precipitations (1771-1990) of seoul (서울의 연 강수량)

  • We analyzed a time series composed of the annual precipitations of Seoul based on the measurements of a Korean raingage and a modern raingage. The precipitations measured with a Korean raingage for the period of 1771 to 1907 are followed by the precipitations with a modern raingage for the period of 1908 to 1990. The latter part of the time series of annual precipitations were obtained from a book for annual precipitations of Korea by Korea Meteorological Administration and the former from Wada's table 1 for monthly precipitations reproduced from the daily rainfall measurements by a Korean raingage for the period of the Yi Dynasty. In our analysis three different precipitation regimes clearly stand out of the entire period. In order to define objectively the period of each precipitation regime we made a time series of 9 year moving averages from the above time series. By taking into account the shapes of the moving average time series and by using a threshold value of annual precipitation 1050 mm, we defined three precipitation regimes of wet period 1(WP1), dry period (DP), and wet period 2 (WP2). The WP1 and WP2 show very similar characteristics in out statistical analyses. On the other hand, DP is very different from the two periods in many statistical aspects. The strong similarities of the WP1 and WP2 regimes in the magnitudes of statistical parameters and in the shapes of their power spectrum distribution are supporting very positively the soundness of precipitation amounts measured with a Korean raingage in spite of numerous conceivable errors which might have been introduced into measurements of precipitation due to changes of observation site and environment, the scale of units employed, and urbanization of Seoul, etc. However, the annual precipitation amounts are not enough to examine throughly the characteristic of precipitation variations during the two regimes. It is definitely necessarly to recover the daily amounts of precipitation, based on two or three times measurements of rainfall with a Korean raingage, scattered in various ancient documents such as the official diary of 'Seungjeong-weon'

King Hyojong's diseases and death records - through the Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty Seungjeongwonilgi(承政院日記) (승정원일기의 의안(醫案)을 통해 살펴본 효종의 질병과 사인)

  • Objectives : King Hyojong (1619-1659) was the 17th king of the Joseon Dynasty. He was on the throne from 1649 to 1659. The king was a center of state rule in ancient times. This meant that the physical and mental status of a king was very confidential information. In the royal court of Joseon Korea, the treatment process for the king had to be performed under the surveillance of close associates, and this whole process had to be recorded by the official secretary. This is the reason that I referred to the Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty. Methods : Relevant articles were extracted from Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty and analyzed according to the main arguments of this paper. Some other related sources were referred in terms of King Hyojong's ailments and treatments. Results & Conclusions : King Hyojong suffered from various diseases during his time on the throne. Fever was the most frequent ailment; he also often had diarrhea followed by poor appetite. I assume that he must have suffered from diabetes considering his ailments. Additionally, his final treatment records clearly show that his ailments were similar to diabetic complications.

  • Smallpox and measles might be the typical epidemics through Choson Danasty. Especially Sookjong was the first king who suffered from smallpox during the period of his reign. This study was examined critically focused on the Clinical Records about Smallpox which occurred in the 9th year of Sookjong's reign. The clinical records in Seungjeongwon Ilgi("承政院日記") was the main source and the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty was reffered. It tells us that Sookjong caught infectious disease, smallpox spread in town and the whole process of smallpox. Seungmagalgeuntang(升麻葛根湯) and hwadoktang(火毒湯) were given at the early term for treating Sookjong's smallpox, but later on, Bowontang(補元湯) was given for the treatment of smallpox. It showed us the medical view which placed emphasis on the vital force of human body. A dermatologist, Yoo Sang had joined since the beginning of the treatment and Siyakchung(侍藥廳) was established for Sookjong. Sasunghoichuntang(四聖回天湯) which was Chunyoohyung(全有亨)'s prescription showed us enough clinical experience and the ways of treatments. At the same time, the medical culture at that time was well known through the fact that smallpox was taboo among the royal family.

A Study on CV12 Moxibustion of King Sukjong(肅宗) of Joseon Dynasty -Focusing on Seungjeongwon Ilki(承政院日記) Yakbang(藥房) Records - (숙종(肅宗)의 중완혈(中脘穴) 수구사(受灸事) 연구 - 『승정원일기』 약방기록을 중심으로 -)

  • Objectives : To investigate the progress, characteristics, and reasons of CV12 moxibustion that King Sukjong of Joseon Dynasty had experienced 31 years since 1684. Methods : This study mainly extracted the records and related records about CV12 moxibustion of King Sukjong and relevant records from Seungjeongwon Ilgi, and analyzed them. Aside from that, medical books wrote at that time and relevant records were additionally investigated. Results : King Sukjong cauterized CV12 or other CV12 related acupoints with moxa 21 years out of his 31 years from 1684 to 1714. The cautery period was usually between late January and mid February. He had 100 pieces of moxa for cautery. On the last day of his moxibustion, he cauterized ST36 with moxa. The moxibustion process consisted of the following steps: suggestion or requirement of moxibustion, decision of date and time, and moxa cautery. In 1684, the reason why King Sukjong cauterized CV12 with moxa was to treat his joint pain and nauseous symptoms. The effect can be found in Donguibogam, many other Korean medical books, and other general books at that time. In 1685, he began to cauterize CV12 with moxa to prevent diseases. Since then, most moxa cautery on CV12 had been performed in the same context. Conclusions : For 21 years, King Sukjong repeatedly cauterized CV12 with moxa. The moxa therapy was conducted to prevent diseases mostly. And King Sukjong had a lot of interest in the therapy. For the reasons, the therapy had repeatedly been performed so long.

The Effect of Cooking Form of Rice and Barley on the Postprandial Serum Glucose and Insulin Responses in Normal Subject (조리형태를 달리한 쌀과 보리의 급여가 정상인의 혈당과 인슐린치에 미치는 영향)

  • To investigate the effect of cooking form of rice and barley on postprandial serum glucose and insulin response in normal subject, five test carbohydrates calculated to contain 50g of glucose were consumed. Oral ingestions were divided into 5 group, i. e. dextrose(control), ground white rice, ground barley, whole white rice, whole barley, Postprandial glucose and insulin responses were measured over 3hr and showed the following pattern. Dextrose and ground white rice elicited similar postprandial serum glucose and insulin responses whereas ground barley and whole white rice intemediate, whole barley gave the lowest responses in the test group. The ground form of rice and barley were significantly higher responses than the unground form of those as well as whole white rice were higher responses whole barley, The results suggested that the cooking form of rice and barley was an important determinant of the postprandial metabolic responses.

  • 인공지능 기계학습에 의한 한문고전 자동번역기는 승정원일기 뿐만 아니라, 한국 고문헌 중 천문 기록에 특화되어 한자로 된 천문 고전을 한글로 번역해 서비스하고 있다. 한국천문연구원은 한국지능정보사회진흥원이 주관하는 2019년도 Information and Communication Technology 기반 공공서비스 촉진사업에 한국고전번역원과 공동 참여하여 이 자동 번역기 개발을 완료한 것이다. 이 번역기의 개발 목적은 초벌 번역 수준일지라도 문장 형태의 한문을 한글로 자동 번역하는 것이며, 이 연구는 현재 번역기 운용 현황을 서비스 별로 분석하고자 한다. 자동 번역관련 서비스는 크게 3가지이다. 첫째, 누구나 웹 접속을 통해 사용 가능한 한문고전 자동번역 대국민 서비스이다. 1년간 자체 시험을 거쳐 2021년 1월 12일 시험판을 오픈하여 운용 중에 있다. 둘째, 기관별로 구축된 코퍼스와 도메인 특화된 번역 모델 등을 관리할 수 있는 한문고전 자동번역 확산 플랫폼 서비스이다. 대국민 서비스와 함께 클라우드 기반으로 서비스되며, 한국고전번역원이 관리를 담당한다. 셋째, 자동번역 Applied Programmable Interface를 활용한 한국천문연구원 내 자체 활용이 가능한 천문고전 자동번역 서비스이다. 서비스 현황 분석은 기관별 관리 서비스에 해당되는 한문고전 자동번역 확산 플랫폼에서 집계하여 제공하는 대시보드의 통계 기능을 활용한다. 각 서비스별 문장과 파일 번역 이용 건수, 번역 속도, 평균 자수 뿐만 아니라, 번역 모델 프로필에 따른 이용률 분석이 가능하다. 이에 따른 주요 분석 중 하나인 올해 전체 번역 이용 건수는 한 해 각 기관의 평균 방문자수 대비 87% 성과 목표에 해당되는 약 38만 건에 근접할 것으로 예측된다. 이 자동 번역기는 원문 해독 시간을 단축시키는 효과와 함께 미번역 천문 고문헌의 활용성을 높여 다양한 연구에 기여할 것이다.

Jang(Fermented Soybean) in Official and Royal Documents in Chosun Dynasty Period (조선조의 공문서 및 왕실자료에 나타난 장류)

  • This paper investigated the system that is relevant to Jang(fermented soybean paste or solution), the relief of hunger-stricken people by Jang, 33 kinds of Jang, and its consumption in the documents, such as the annals of the Chosun Dynasty, Ihlseong-document, Seungjeongwon daily, Uigwe(record of national ceremony), official documents on the basis of Kyujanggak institute for the Korean studies and data base of Korean classics. There are lots of Jang named after the place of particular soybean's production from the ancient times. Jang, soybean, salt and Meju(source of Jang), during the Dynasty, were collected as taxation or tribute. In the 5th year of Hyeonjong(1664), the storage amount of soybean in Hojo(ministry of finance) was 16,200 $k{\ell}$, and its consumption was 7,694 $k{\ell}$ a year. In the 32nd year of Yongjo(1756), the 1,800 $k{\ell}$ of soybean was distributed to the people at the time of disaster, and in his 36th year(1756), the 15,426 $k{\ell}$ of soybean was reduced from the soybean taxation nationwide. The offices managing Jang are Naejashi, Saseonseo, Sadoshi, Yebinshi and Bongsangshi. Chongyoongcheong(Gyeonggi military headquarters) stored the 175.14 $k{\ell}$ of Jang, and the 198 $k{\ell}$ of Jang in Yebinshi. There are such posts managing Jang as Jangsaek, Jangdoo, and Saseonsikjang. In the year of Jeongjong(1777~1800), the royal family distributed the 3.6 $k{\ell}$ of Meju to Gasoon-court, Hygyeong-court, queen's mother-court, queen's court, royal palace. The 13.41 $k{\ell}$ of Gamjang(fermented soybean solution) was distributed to the Gasoon-court, 17.23 $k{\ell}$ to Hegyeong-court, 17.09 $k{\ell}$ to the queen's mother-court, and the 17.17 $k{\ell}$ to the queen's court each. There are 112 Jang-storing pots in the royal storages, and the 690 are in Namhan-hill, where the 2.7 $k{\ell}$ of fermented Jang was made and brought back by them each year. At the time of starvation, Jang relieved the starving people. There are 20 occasions of big reliefs, according to the annals of the Chosun Dynasty. In the 5th year of Sejong(1423), the 360 $k{\ell}$ of Jang was given to the hunger-stricken people. In his 6th year(1424), the 8,512.92 $k{\ell}$ of rice, bean, and Jang was provided and in the 28th year(1446), the 8,322.68 $k{\ell}$ of Jang was also provided to them. In the Dynasty, Jang was given as a salary. In case that when they were bereaved, they didn't eat Jang patiently for its preservation. They were awarded for their filial piety. In the annals of the Chosun Dynasty, there are 19 kinds of Jang. They are listed in the order of Jang(108), Yeomjang(90), Maljang(11), Yookjang(5), Gamjang(4), and etc.,. In Seungjeongwon daily, there are 11 kinds of Jang. Jang(6), Cheongjang (5), Maljang(5), and Tojang(3) are listed in order. In the Ihlseong-document, there are 5 kinds of Jang. They are listed in Jang(15), Maljang(2), Gamjang(2), and etc.,. There are 13 kinds of Jang in Uigwe, and the official documents, in the order of Gamjang(59), Ganjang(37), Jang(28), Yeomjang(7), Maljang(6), and Cheongjang(5). In addition, shi are Jeonshi(7), and Dooshi(4). All these are made of only soybean except, for Yookjang. The most-frequently recorded Jang among anthology, cookbook, the annals of the Chosun Dynasty, Ihlseong-document, Seoungjeongwon daily, Uigwe, or official document is Jang(372), and then Yeomjang(194), Gamjang(73), Cheongjang(46), Ganjang(46), Soojang(33), and Maljang(26), which were made of soybean. Jang from China in cookbook is not in anthology and royal palace documents. Thus, traditional Jang made of soybean was used in the daily food life in the royal court, and in the public during the Chosun period.

A Study on the Planting Records of Needle Fir in Gwangneung (광릉 전나무 식재기록에 관한 고찰)

  • The study was done to analyze the records of planting time of Gwangneung needle firs referring to the historical literatures, the Annals of Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄), Seungjeongwonilgi(承政院日記: Journal of the Royal Secretariat). Bibyeonsadeungnok(備邊司謄錄: Records of the Bibyeonsa Defense Council, a government agency during the Joseon Dynasty), Ilseongnok(日省錄: Journal on Dynasty affairs of the kings in the 36th year of Youngjo to 1910) to lay the historical ground for needle firs in Gwangneung. The following results were derived from previous research, Report on Gwangneung Forest Ecosystem, and overlaid fir tree rings. The research findings are as follow. First, since the system of making the grave is the most conservative system, the planting during the Gwangneung construction would have been preceded by precedent. Second, the problem of cutting the tree in the late Joseon Dynasty became serious. It is published the Law of Muo In the 22nd year of Jeongjo, and then planted trees regularly in spring and autumn. Third, the Law of Muo was preserved for 31 years during the reign of King Gojong, and the type of specific tree, the number of trees, from the 22nd year until the 25th year of King Gojong, four years of fir trees were planted in Gwangneung, and Gwangneung was the only place where korean pine trees were planted. Fourth, it was possible to identify the age of the tree through fallen fir tree rings, and the period of planting fir trees growing in the existing mausoleum is judged to be the equivalent year of King Gojong's reign from the 10th year of King Cheoljong's reign.

Influencing Factors on Successful Aging of Middle and Old Aged Men (중·노년층 남성의 성공적 노화 영향요인)

  • Purpose: This study is to verify and analyze the influencing factors of successful aging with social support, self-efficacy, community environment and subjective health status on middle and old aged men. Methods: The survey was performed to the men between the ages of 50 and 79 in Seoul and Kyunggi province, Korea. 144 questionnaires were collected and analyzed by SPSS 18.0 program. Stepwise multiple regression was used to identify significant predictors of successful aging. Results: The most influencing factor for successful aging was social support, the second was self-efficacy, the third and the fourth was community environment and subjective health status. This regression model explained 56.7% of the variance in successful aging. Conclusion: The result shows that these variables should be considered in intervention and program of successful aging for middle and old aged men. It can be an important consideration in enhancing promoting care and welfare for the successful aging.

A Research on Porridge that King Yeongjo Had Been Served - Based on The Daily Record of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty during King Yeongjo period - (영조가 복용한 죽(粥)에 대한 고찰 - 『승정원일기(承政院日記)』의 영조 기록을 중심으로 -)

  • Objectives : Many curative methods are used utilized in order to rid human body of disease when people become sick. Traditional Korean medicine generally prescribe methods that involve acupunture, moxibustion, or herb formulae. However, different types of foods are sometimes used as well. While wondering the history and efficacy of Qi-elevation foods that were consumed by Koreans in the past, the author discovered that a record from the Joseon Dynasty, called The Daily Record of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty, henceforth the Records, contained information about different types of porridge. Hence, the author looked through the records of porridge as written in the historical material in an attempt to learn the examples and efficacy of medicine-porridge consumed in Joseon's royal palace. Methods : After searching for the keyword, 'porridge', in the Records as provided by the National Institute of Korean History, the author extracted the porridges recorded during the Yeongjo period that each has its own special name. Results : Different types of porridge were recorded in the Records as following: arrowroot porridge, bean-leaf porridge, mung bean porridge, bean porridge, malt-rice porridge, oriental arborvitae seed porridge, crucian porridge, lotus seed porridge, adlay porridge, red bean porridge, welsh onion porridge, milk porridge, seashell porridge, ginko nut porridge, black sesame porridge, and mandarin porridge. Each porridge was used for the purpose of alleviating any disease that afflicted the king Yeongjo or his royal family members in relation with the ingredient herb's medicinal function. Conclusions : These porridges consumed by the king Yeongjo and his royal family members were used not only with a purpose of aiding their body's recovery from disease, but with the goal to actively curing them of ailments.
