This paper presents the results of a reduced-scale physical model investigation into the behavior of retaining walls subject to cycles of wetting and drying due to rainfall infiltration. Reduced-scale model walls equipped with a water spraying system that can simulate the wetting process were first constructed and a series of tests were conducted with due consideration of different rainfall intensities and backfill soil types. The results indicate that cycles of wetting and drying process have adverse effects on the wall behavior, increasing wall deformation as well as earth pressure acting on the wall, and that the first cycle of wetting and drying process has more pronounced effect on the wall performance than the ensuing cycles. It is also shown that the degree to which the wetting and drying cycles affect the wall behavior depends greatly on the backfill soil type, and that the larger the fine contents, the greater is the effect of cycles of wetting and drying on the wall behavior. Practical implications of the findings from this study are discussed in great detail.
Since sediment in a stable state is disturbed during the process from sediment in a natural state to dredged soil, the turbidity of water is not good. When the dredged soil settles again, the volume change in the sediment occurs. Coagulant and flocculant are added for turbidity mitigation of the water and faster settling process of suspended solid, and the amount of the substances affects the characteristics of the dredged soil. This study is to investigate the characteristics of the dredged soil depending on the amount of three chemical products added to the wet dredged soil and the dry dredged soil through measuring the suspended solids (SS), volume change and sedimentation velocity. The experimental measurements show that the SS decreased, the volume change rate increased, and the sedimentation velocity increased, as the chemical amount increased. In addition, it was found that the dry dredged soil reacted even with little quantity of the chemicals because derelict and microorganism are removed due to the drying process at $100{\pm}5^{\circ}C$.

Moisture is one of the important design factors that affects to the changes of physical properties and air permeability in the composting matrix. This study examines the effects of moisture during the wetting and drying procedure on physical properties like bulk density, particle size, free air space and air permeability in the sawdust used as the bulking agent in composting process. During both procedures of wetting and drying of the water, with increasing moisture content, bulk density and particle size increased, but FAS decreased. In the range of near 40 to 60% moisture content on a wet basis, particle size and FAS in wetting procedure were larger and higher than those in drying procedure. During wetting procedure, pressure drop continuously decreased ranging from near 20 to 60% moisture content, despite of decreasing FAS as a consequence of increasing moisture, and then over the range of 60% moisture content, pressure drop rapidly increased to the saturated moisture condition while the pore space was filled with the water. On the other hand, during drying procedure, pressure drop decreased from the saturated condition to 40% moisture content. In the recommended range of 50 to 60% moisture content for composting operation, pressure drop in wetting procedure were lower than in drying procedure. For the enhancement of the air permeability in the composting matrix, the wetting procedure was proper than the drying procedure, and the optimum moisture content for the efficient composting operation was appeared to be near 60%.
A simulated rainfall system was built, and the unsaturated characteristics were examined by execution of simulated rainfall system test and soil water characteristic curve cell test(SWCC Cell Test) under the various rainfall and slope conditions. With the results, the applicability of infiltration behavior under rainfall and soil water characteristic curve models to the unsaturated weathered granite soil was examined. At the results of comparison the volumetric water content and matric suction measured in the wetting process(under rainfall) with those in the drying process(leaving as it was) of the simulated rainfall system, the volumetric water content showed a difference of $2{\sim}5%$ and matric suction of about $3{\sim}10\;kPa$, indicating the occurrence of hysteresis. In addition, the difference was relatively larger in matric suction than in the volumetric water content, and this tells that the hysteresis behavior is larger in matric suction. When the soil water characteristic curve derived from measurements in simulated rainfall system test were compared with those from the soil water characteristic curve cell test, both methods produced soil water characteristic curves close each other in the wetting process and the drying process, but in both, there was a difference between results obtained from in the wetting process and those from in the drying process. Thus, when soil water characteristic curves are rationally applied to the design and stability analysis considering of the properties of unsaturated soil, it is considered desirable to apply the soil water characteristic curve of the wetting process to the wetting process, and that of the drying process to the drying process.
The tensile properties of cocoon filament obtained from the dried cocoon were studied by deniroscope and tensilon with special attachments. The strength and dried elongation at break feint with dry and swollen samples were observed. The apparent young's modulus was also calculated with the dry samples. The results obtained are as follows. 1) The breaking strength of dry and swollen samples decreased in parallel with denier decreasing ratio in the whole length of a cocoon filament. 2) Tensile strength of inner-layer filament, when treated at the temperature of 95$^{\circ}C$ for 15 min., was 37 per cent of outer-layer filament. 3) By swelling treatment, the breaking strength of the filament was decreased but the elongation was increased. 4) Apparent young's modulus and tensile strength per denier of inner-layer filament were higher than those of the rest cocoon layer.

In this study, the effect of cyclic wetting-drying on the self-healing of cementitious materials containing superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) were experimentally evaluated. In each cycle, cracked cement paste specimens containing various SAP dosages were exposed to wet conditions for 1 h, during which the capillary water absorption tests and water flow tests were conducted, and then exposed to dry conditions for 47 h. The capillary water absorption test results showed that the sorptivity values of the specimen without SAPs, SAP 0.5%, SAP 1.0%, and SAP 1.5% specimens were decreased by approximately 22.9%, 36.8%, 42.8%, and 46.3%, respectively, after 8 cycles. In addition, the water flow test results showed that the amount of water runoff through the cracks of all cracked specimens gradually decreased over wet/dry cycles, especially the reduction ratio of the amount of water runoff increased with increasing SAP dosage. Furthermore, the swelling behavior of SAPs in cracks by in gress water was con firmed via X-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis. These results indicate that the effective crack width can be reduced as SAPs absorb water and swell, while the water absorbed in SAPs can be released to crack surfaces under dry conditions, further promoting healing product formation. This study demon strates that the in corporation of SAPs can in crease the water tightness of cracks, thereby improving the self-healing efficiency of cementitious materials.

Soil-water characteristic curves (SWCCs), which represent a physical property in partially saturated soils, show the relation between volumetric water content and matric suction. The SWCCs exhibit hysteresis during wetting and drying, however experimental expressions used to describe SWCCs have generally ignored the hysteresis. In addition, the shape of SWCC may depend on the void ratio which is changed by soil skeleton deformations or hysteretic behavior under various loading conditions. Hence, it is necessary to understand, both empirically and analytically, the relationship between soil skeleton deformations and the SWCCs of various soils. The typical SWCCs experimentally have drying, wetting, and the second drying curve. The measurement of a complete set of hysteretic curves is severely time-consuming and difficult works, then the first drying curve of SWCC is generally determined to estimate the hydraulic conductivity and shear strength function of partially saturated soils. This paper presents the hydraulic-mechanical behavior of partially saturated soils (weathered soil and silty soil) for volume changes and hysteresis in SWCCs regarding the difference between the first drying and wetting curve.
Hysteresis is a common feature exhibited in hydraulic properties of an unsaturated soil. This study focuses on hysteresis observed in a compacted weathered granite subgrade soils based on the pressure plate laboratory tests. It was found that the Soil-Water Characteristics Curve of a soil is hysteretic and unique. The results also show that the wetting and drying curves predicted using the Fredlund and Xing model is quite close to the laboratory-measured results. For a specific matric suction, water content or coefficient of permeability on a wetting curve is always lower than those found on a drying curve.
This study was conducted to determine the properties of seedling plate papers currently used in commercial production, then to get basic information for manufacturing new seedling plate paper. Imported seedling plate paper had high wet tensile and burst strengths in its usage circumstances. Wet tensile strength was very high with 38.7% of dry tensile strength. Wet burst strength was also very high with 62.4% of dry burst strength. The seedling plate paper contained about 30% of synthetic fibers. It had 10 Gurley sec. in air permeability indicating effective movement of air. Seedling plate papers were' made in laboratory scale. For sufficient sizing degree, the addition of 0.5% AKD (alkylketene dimer) by weight was good enough. Additional amount of AKD more than 0.5% by weight caused strength loss even though improving sizing effect. The addition of wet strength reagent such as Finex-B 2% by weight resulted in good strength and air permeability.
