A failure analysis of holddown spring screw was performed using fracture mechanics approach. The spring screw was designed such that it was capable of sustaining the loads imposed by the initial tensile preload and operational loads. In order to investigate the cause of failure, a stress analysis of the top nozzle spring assembly was done using finite element analysis and a life prediction of the screw was made using a fracture mechanics approach. The elastic-plastic finite element analysis showed that the local stresses at the critical regions of head-shank fillet and thread root significantly exceeded than the yield strength of the screw material, resulting in local plastic deformation. Primary water stress corrosion cracking life of the Inconel 600 screw was predicted by using integration of the Scott model and resulted in 1.42 years, which was fairly close to the actual service life of the holddown spring screw.

In this paper, a computer simulationtechnique for the forging process having a spring-attached die was presented . The penalty rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method was empolyed together with an interatively force-balancing method, in which the convergence was achieved when the forming load and the spring reaction force are in equilibrium within the user-specified allowable accuracy. The force balance was controled by adjusting the velocity of the spring-attched die. th minimize the number of internations, a velocity estimating schemewas proposed. Two application examples found in the related company were given. In the first application example, the predicted metal folw lines were compared with the acturally forged ones. in the second example, a hot forging process with a spring-attached die was simulated and the analyzed results were discussed in order to investigated the effects of spring-attached dies on the metal flow lines and the forming loads.

A simple numerical analysis procedure has been proposed to trace the response of unstiffened offshore tubular members subjected to lateral impacts and eventually to estimate the consequential extent of damage. In the procedure a tubular member is reduced to a spring-mass system having two degrees-of-freedom. one for local denting deformation and the other for that of overall bending. Results of impact tests have been correlated with those of numerical analysis in order to achieve an empirical representation of the strain-rate sensitivity and other dynamic effects upon the spring coefficient for bending deformation. The theoretical estimates of extents of damage correlate reasonably well with those obtained in experiments.

Displacement, contact pressure and moment which are developed in rigid beam on the Winkler foundation and 2 parameter Winkler foundation were derived. It can be seen that moment distribution along with rigid beam on the Winkler foundation are regardless of spring constant and the moments calculated from assuming linear spring constant were greater than those from assuming constant spring constant. Simple calculation revealed that the maximum moment developed in the rigid beam on the 2 parameter Winkler foundation was larger than that developed in the rigid beam on the Winkler foundation.

For many decades, the railway was constructed using tracks with jointed rails of relatively short lengths in accordance with rolling and handling technology. The joints cause many drawbacks in the track and lead to significant maintenance cost. So, railroad engineers became interested in eliminating joints to increase service loads ana speeds by improving rolling, welding, and fastening technology. Continuous welded rail(CWR) track has many advantages over the conventional jointed-rail track. But, in the case of the elimination of rail joints, it may cause the track to be suddenly buckled laterally by thermal loads. In this paper, CWR track model and CWRB program are developed for linear buckling analysis using finite element method. Rail element with a total of 14 degrees of freedom is used. The stiffness of the fastener, tie, and ballast bed are included by a set of spring elements. The investigation on the buckling modes and temperature of CWR track is presented.

Development of the paved track is required as a low-maintenance of conventional line. The paved tracks are one of the types of the ballast reinforced tracks those are manufactured by adopting the prepacked concrete technique. The main elements of this tracks are large sleeper, low elastic pad, fastener, cement mortar, geotextile and recycled ballast. Low elastic pad is the most effective element of such tracks on the basis of stress-displacement characteristics, dynamic response and fatigue characteristics. The stiffness of the pad determine the stiffness of the track. Consequently, it is more important in case of concrete track structure such as paved track because application of low elastic pad seriously effect the durability and stability of the track. The main objective of this study is to confirm the reduction of train load, which transfer to roadbed through various pad effects. To achieve this task static, numerical analysis and real scale repeated loading test was performed while load reduction effect of low elastic pad was analyzed by using displacement, stress and strain ratio characteristics of the paved track.

This paper presents full scale model tests on the various types of model piles carried out to estimate the behavior of laterally loaded steel-concrete composite piles. Subgrade-reaction spring system was developed to simulate the reaction of ground in laboratory condition. In addition, lateral behavior of piles under working load condition was estimated using composite loading system, which is available for independent loading in vertical and horizontal direction. Steel-concrete composite piles showed higher efficiency in lateral resistance rather than drilled shaft made of reinforced concrete. The lateral resistance of composite pile was larger than the summation of steel pile and concrete pile due to the composite effect by steel casing. The effect of shear key or strength of concrete on the behavior of composite pile was examined. The substitution of reinforcing bar by steel casing was also investigated.

A linear and non-linear analysis for plates and shells with arbitrary edge supports subjected to various loading was presented. The 9-node ANS(Assumed Natural Strain) hell element was employed and the spring element, which could express an arbitrary edge support using the six degrees of freedom, was introduced. For the application of his analysis, the plates and shells with various edge supports were analyzed, and the ending behavior with these edge supports were obtained accurately. For these edge supports, particularly elastic edge support was simulated by six springs and reasonable results were obtained. The results show that the present method can be widely used to analyze the bending behavior of plates and shells with arbitrary edge conditions.
Optical fibers, for splice, are stripped of their plastic coatings with a plastic stripper and cut off at the end. Therefore, stripped fibers often receive accidental damages and sustain small flaws or cracks. As a result, the breaking strength of a fiber splice made under normal conditions is reduced to about 0.4∼1 ㎏ on the average, nearly one-tenth of the fiber's strength. This makes it necessary to reinforce the splice. One of the most practical and reliable methods for optical fiber splicing is fusion splicing, comprising the steps of tripping the plastic coatings from the two fiber ends to be splice, placing the two bare fiber ends in an end-to-end position, and of fusion splicing, such as are fusion. Generally, steel bar (SB) sleeve is used to reinforce this fusion-splicing region. However, this type of sleeve has a critical defect to keep optical lose after bent by a sudden load. New type of composite spring (CS) sleeve is developed to make up for the weak points in the SB sleeve. This sleeve has an effect on restoration to the original state after eliminating the bending load. The optical spectrum analyzes results show the availability of reinforcement for the fusion splicing optical fiber using small diameter composite springs under the various loading conditions.

The objective of this paper is to propose an analysis technique to predict the behavior of PC wall structures subjected to cyclic load. While PC wall panel is idealized by finite elements, the joints at which PC walls are connected each other are idealized by nonlinear spring elements. Axial and shear spring elements are developed for simulating shear, compression and tension behaviors of joints. The strength and stiffness of each spring elements we presented from the previous research results and incorporated into the computer program of DRAIN-2DX. The proposed analysis technique is evaluated by analyzing specimens previously tested and comparing with those. On the strength, stiffness, energy dissipation and lateral drift, analytical results show good agreements with test results. This means the proposed technique is effective to predict the response of the PC wall structures.
