  • This study presents an experimental investigation of the shallow water impact of a box type structure. The analysis was done based on the video images captured by a high speed camera, the flow field obtained by PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry), and pressure measurements in the divided region. The video images showed quite good agreement with the description given by Korobkin. The PIV measurements of the velocity field provided a clear view of the flow pattern for all three stages. The pressure was measured at the bottom of the tank with strain gauge type pressure gauges. The pressure measurements showed the characteristics of divided regions.

  • This paper presents the experimental results on slamming phenomenon. The air pressure cylinder was used to ensure repeatability of the impact. The results showed that the adopted experimental technique was excellent in terms of repeatability, compared to that of the free drop tests. The pressure time histories, magnitude of peak pressure and the behavior of jetspray were obtained. The flat specimen was tested for various incident angles. To estimate the incident speed of the specimen, a high-speed camera was used. The high-speed camera was also a useful tool in understanding the behavior.

  • Laser-induced breakdown spesctroscopy (LIBS) is a technique that complements the disadvantages of conventional laser-based combustion diagnosis techniques such as weak signal strength, complex equipment configuration, and low accuracy. In this study, basic research was carried out to measure the combustion gas temperature of scramjet engines using LIBS. Spray flames were generated from Jet A-1 fuel used in scramjet engines and gas temperatures were measured at the top of the flames with a calibrated thermocouple. The LIBS signals were acquired at the same points as the temperature measurement positions of the thermocouple. The LIBS spectra were analyzed to obtained a calibration curve between the LIBS signal and the reference temperature measured at the thermocouple. Therefore, it was confirmed that the combustion gas temperature can be measured in-situ using LIBS.

  • This study presents investigation on ullage effect in sloshing experiment. The experiment was done with two dimensional tank. Sloshing experiments were carried out in the tank with 6 different ullage pressures. The tested filling ratio was 30% of the tank height. The flow field was recorded with high speed camera. The sloshing impact pressure were measured at 18 locations. It was shown that the variation of ullage pressures influences the magnitude of pressure and flow field. This study demonstrated the importance of ullage pressure in sloshing test.

  • This study presents the results of a slamming experiment using a pneumatic cylinder. The employment of the pneumatic cylinder showed a relatively good repeatability when the results were compared with those of other slamming devices. The experiment was done for various incident angles. An air pocket was believed to cause a reduction in the magnitude of the impact pressure with an incident angle of $0^{\circ}$ for the water entry. A high speed camera was used in an attempt to locate the time of the contact between the bottom of the specimen and the free surface. It seemed that the maximum pressure occurred before the water contacted the bottom of the specimen.
