  • There is a growing tendency for injury and it is essential to know about the epidemiology of the injured teeth for proper and timely treatment. Through empirical data analysis of 120 children who came to pediatric dentistry of Kangnung National University Dental Hospital, this study purposes to give an understanding about the injury and analyzes the frequency by children's sex and age, the number of injured teeth according to the area in the mouth, the types of injury, causes and places of injury, the frequency occurred by month and hour, the position of injured teeth, and the elapse of time. The main findings of this study are summarized as follows: 1. The frequency analysis by sex shows that the rate of boys is more likely to be higher than girls(1.6:1). 2. The frequency analysis by age shows that the ratio of children between aged 2~4 and 8~10 are high. 3. The number of injured teeth is generally one(51.7%). 4. Periodontal tissue injury is the main cause for the primary teeth. In case of permanent teeth, the ratio of hard tissue injury which is much increased than the case of the primary teeth, is similar to that of periodontal tissue injury. 5. The main cause of injury is fall for both dentition; In case of permanent dentition, the ratio of injury by sports is increased. 6. The place of injury for primary teeth is mainly home(38.8%); Street and school for permanent teeth(42.5% and 35%, respectively). 7. The frequency by month shows that the injury is most frequently occurred in July. 8. The frequency analysis by hour shows that injury for primary teeth mostly happens in the morning; in the afternoon for permanent teeth. 9. The position of injured teeth according to the area in the mouth is mainly maxilla anterior in both case of primary and permanent teeth and especially the ratio of central incisors is high, 10. More than half(59.2%) of patients came to the hospital within one day and the seriously injured were likely to come within one day than the slightly injured.

  • This study was accompolished to analyze and compare the number and area of the occlusal contact points in healthy volunteers and athletes with normal occlusion. Before the study, 89 athletes(sports career:8.6 years, average age 20) at Kyung Hee University were selected, and survey was accomplished for athlete's recognition about sports dentistry. For this study, 15 athletes(13 amles and 2 females with average age 20) and 21 healthy volunteers(14 mles and 7 females with average age 20.09) at Kyung Hee University were selected. The visual display acquired by scanning of occlusal record in maximal intercuspation was converted into 16 gray value image. Then, using computer program(J & Lee Occlusal Analyser), the pixel which was in definite range of the gray value was recognized, and the numbers of recognized pixel were calculated to area. The results were as follows : (1) On the survey about sports dentistry, 28% of 89 athletes didn't agree that human occlusion may be important, and 30% didn't have any idea of the influence of human occlusion during their sports activities. (2) The average numbers of total occlusal contact points were 31.05 in control group, and 34.67 in athlete group. The average area of total occlusal contacts was $100.25mm^2$ in control group, and $127.78mm^2$ in athlete group. (3) In control group, the average numbers of occlusal contact points were revealed in order as follows; the first molar(8.48), the second molar(8.24), the second premolar(4.71), the lateral incisor(2.90), the first premor(2.43), the central incisor(2.19), and the canine(2.1). The least average in canine(2.1) was similar to the average(2.19) in central incisor and (2.09) in lateral incisor. In athlete group, the average numbers of occlusal contact points were revealed in order as follows; the first molar(8.87), the second molar(8.47), the second premolar(5.60), the canine(3.80), the lateral incisor(3.33), the first premolar(2.67), and the central incisor(1.93). (4) In control group, the average areas of occlusal contact surface were revealed in order as follows; the first molar($39.47mm^3$), the second molar($37.54mm^3$), the second premolar($9.54mm^3$) the first premolar($6.18mm^3$), canine($3.49mm^3$), the central incisor($2.76mm^3$), and the lateral incisor($1.28mm^3$). In athlete group, the average areas of occlusal contact surface were revealed in order as follows; the first molar($44.11mm^3$), the second molar($40.69mm^3$), the second premolar($16.50mm^3$), the first premolar($9.39mm^3$), the canine($5.08mm^3$), the lateral incisor($3.7mm^3$), and the central incisor($2.25mm^3$). (5). With aging in both control and athlete group, there was a decreasing tendancy in average number of occlusal contact point, and was an increasing tendancy in average area of occlusal contact surface. In comparison at each age, both the numbers and area of occlusal contact were greater in athlete group than in control group. It was not significant in the numbers of occlusal contact points beween athlete and control group(p>0.1), but significant in the area of occlusal contact surface(p<0.05). (6) In comparision as to the kind of sports(Gymnastics:2, Rugby:3, Soccor:5, Ice hocky:5), the numbers of occlusal contact points were the most in ice hocky, and the area of occlusal contact surface was the greatest in gymnastics. With increasing a career in athlete group, there was a decreasing tendancy in average numbers of occlusal contact points, and was an increasing tendancy in average area of occlusal contact surface.

  • The purpose of this study is concerned with an investigation of the actual condition of traumatic injuries of teeth and supporting structures in children to set up possible criteria for prevention and treatment of injured teeth. The materials consisted of the clinical records of 431 traumatically injured teeth of 212 children, accumulated during two years from the first of April in 1998 to the end of March in 2000, supplied from the Dept. of Pediatric Dentistry, Chonbuk National University Hospital. The incidence of injuries in boys was extremely high for permanent teeth, twice as high as in girls. Accidents to primary teeth were most common from 1 to 2 years of age and to permanent teeth were most from 8 to 9 years of age. The most common cause of trauma was a fall for both primary and permanent teeth, followed by collision. The anterior teeth in maxilla was most frequently affected by trauma in both the primary and permanent teeth. The most common type of trauma were loosening for the primary teeth, followed by luxation types which included the intrusion, displacement and extrusion and complete avulsion types. For the permanent teeth, the most common type of trauma were tooth fracture. The most common trauma of soft tissue was laceration of upper lip, lower lip and gingiva of maxilla Concerning treatment at the first visit, primary teeth with only loosening and concussion were not usually treated. Permanent teeth were often treated by crown restorations for crown fractures and by endodontic procedures for pulpal exposure. Though we could elucidate actual condition of traumatic injuries of teeth in children, we should make a follow-up survey to ensure the prognosis of injured teeth and establish the most desirable criteria for traumatized teeth in children.

Following is the results after analyzing the compiled datas. 1. The E.Q. level difference between people who joined, and who not joined in a sports action activity was reported existing, the total E.Q average of those who joined was resulted 212.6, a point 29.6 higher than those not joined of 183.0 ( p< .05). As for the E.Q causing points, it resulted that the points of the joined group is generally up than that of the non-joined group, especially this difference was remarkable in terms of feeling recognition or feeling control, a finding that deserves an attention ( p<.05) 2. Joining periods of sports activity did also have relation to develping E.Q. of school-childhood according to this research, the total E.Q points of a group joined in the activity more than 2 years was 215.5 points, which was 17.4 points higher than those not joined of 186.5 points ( p< .05). Backing again to E.Q causing points in this case, it resulted without exeption of all main causes that those who joined in more than 2 years are generally higher than that of those joined less than 2 years, especially the difference was regarded as big in terms of feeling recognition or feeling control, a finding that deserves an attention ( p<.01). 3. The E.Q. differnce between those joined in a specialty aptitude activity and not joined was studied existing, the total E.Q average points of those joined in a specialty aptitude activity was 207.8, a higher figure by 21.3 points than those not joined group of 186.5 ( p< .05). As for the E.Q causing points, it resulted without exeption of all main causes that those who joined are generally higher than that of those not joined, especially for feeling recognition or feeling control, this difference was more clear, a finding that deserves an attention ( p<.01). 4. It also resulted that E.Q growth depends on the periods to have joined in a speciality aptitude activity, for example, the total E.Q points of those joined in the activity more than 2 years was 217.1, a total more higher by 13.5 points than 203.6 of those not joined ( p< .05). For the E.Q. causing points, it, with the exception of empathy was resulted that those who joined in the speciality aptitude activity more than 2 years are generally higher than those joined less than 2 years, especially the difference is remarkable in terms of feeling recognition or feeling control, a finding that is also remarkable ( p<.05). 5. The E.Q difference between the men and women who joined in both activities of sports & speciality aptitude was found existing, the total E.Q. average for women was resulted 214.2 points, which was 9.2 points higher than men of 205.0. As for the E.Q. causing points, which, without exeption of main causes, women's was reported being high than that of men, in special is more remarkable in terms of feeling control, a finding that deserves an attention. • This study examined the food group and dietary nutrient intakes by sugar-sweetened beverage(SSB) intake level in high school students aged 15~18 years(n=2,377) using the 2007~2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Subjects were classified into three groups by SSB(included carbonated drinks, sports drinks, and caffeinated drinks that contained added sugars) intake level obtained from 24-hour recall method: SSB 1(SSB intake 0 g/d), SSB 2(0 g/d < SSB intake < 50th percentile) and SSB 3(SSB intake ≥ 50th percentile). Result of daily intakes of SSB were 160.6±10.5 g/d for boys and 98.6±7.1 g/d for girls and it increased for boys(p<0.0001) and girls(p=0.0280) by year. The highest intakes were carbonated drinks followed by fruit juices for boys and girls. Intakes of carbonated drinks increased as 2.7 times for boys(p<0.0001) and 1.6 times for girls between 2007 and 2015 year. Daily intakes of vegetables were the lowest in SSB 3 of three groups for boys and girls(p<0.0001), and those of fruits were lower in SSB 2 and SSB 3 than SSB 1 for boys(p=0.0013). Daily intakes of milk & milk products decreased toward SSB 3 group for boys(p<0.0001) while those were the lowest in SSB 3 of three groups for girls. Daily intakes of dietary fiber(21.3~25.3%) and calcium(49.6~59.8%) were very low compared to the dietary reference intakes. Percentage of daily intakes compared to the dietary reference intakes increased for energy for boys and girls(p<0.0001) while decreased for vitamin C toward SSB 3 group for boys(p<0.0001) and girls(p=0.0382). Those of calcium were the lowest in SSB 3 of three groups for boys(p<0.0001) and girls(p=0.0008). Ratio of excess intakes of energy/fat increased toward SSB 3 group for boys and girls(p=0.0002). Ratio of calcium deficiency was not different among groups but that was very high(85.9~92.5%). Therefore, it should be emphasized to reduce SSB intakes in order to improve diversity in food group and dietary nutrient intakes among high school students through dietary education and government support.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in the dynamic visual acuity between (DVA) the distance and near and the effect of change of accommodative stimulus on the dynamic visual acuity by the addition of the plus lens. Methods : The study involved 40 male and female adults ($22.84{\pm}2.43$ years old) with over 1.0 of visual acuity and without systemic disease or ocular disease. We compared the distance and near DVA and the change of DVA induced by the addition of the plus lens(+0.50D, +1.00D, +1.50D). Results : The distance DVA and near DVA are $78.86{\pm}19.46deg/sec$ and $76.90{\pm}18.05deg/sec$ respectively. The distance DVA was slightly higher(p=0.04). The higher the distance DVA, the higher the positive correlation with the near DVA and distance DVA, and distance DVA was higher in those who had higher the near DVA(r=0.95, p=0.00, Fig. 4). The near DVA according to the change of accommodative stimulus was $75.95{\pm}18.85deg/sec$ in full correction and the near DVA with +0.50D spherical power was $76.95{\pm}16.45$ but there was no statistically significant differences(p>0.05). However, the near DVA with +1.00D spherical power was $79.02{\pm}13.51deg/sec$ and it was slightly higher. Also, the near DVA with +1.50D spherical power was $84.28{\pm}18.96deg/sec$, there and it was statistically significant difference(p<0.05). Conclusion : There is no difference between distance and near DVA, but near DVA is also excellent if distance DVA is good. The DVA increases as added a plus lens for controlled accommodative stimulation changes.

  • This study shows the changes in the space created by the planning and leisure activities of Hangang River Park, focusing on the Yeouido portion of the Hangang River Park, which has the most users and the greatest degree of planning. The relationship between planning, behavior, and space changes are explained based on Giddens's Structural Theory. As research material, Hangang River Park plans and satellite photos were interpreted and newspaper articles were used to identifying the space changes and their causes, and a model of the space changes was derived through the application of the theory. The flow of space change in the Yeouido portion of the Hangang River Park due to planning and leisure activities is as follows. In the 1970s, the first sports spaces are made due to need from residents near the riverside, but huge plans for the utilization of the entire space were not realized. In the 1980s, leisure spaces were planned and developed through a comprehensive plan. Various sports spaces were built, but the environment of the spaces became a slum. In the 1990s, various leisure activities were revitalized due to the revision of the legal system, regulations on the usage of space, and space maintenance, and from the late 1990s, ecological issues arose along the Hangang River. In the 2000s, there was an overall space improvement project directed by two comprehensive plans, and cultural and ecological issues appeared in the Hangang River Park plans. However, actual leisure spaces were developed along with the promotion of large-scale activities. Regarding the structuration theory, elements of interaction, modality, and structure are the aspects of space changes in the Yeouido portion Hangang River Park. As the flow of the space change, the proportions of the comprehensive plan and the individual plans were similar. The comprehensive plan was influenced by the change of public businesses and the proliferation of large-scale activities. Individual plans were influenced by the user's activities and opinions. However, both plans were influenced by the users and suppliers. The leisure space of the Hangang River Park can be viewed as a social space, in terms of the structuring as a theory due to the user repeatedly changing the use of the space. The purpos of this study is to investigate the changes in the Hangang River Park space through planning and leisure activities. Through this study, we can understand the characteristics of the Hangang River Park in planning the leisure activity space.

  • The purpose of the this study was to determine the comparative analysis of body muscle activities in plank exercise with and without thera-band. Twelve healthy adult males(age, $21.75{\pm}.57$ years; height, $173.33{\pm}1.34cm$; body mass, $65.92{\pm}1.64kg$; and BMI, $21.93{\pm}.46kg/m^2$) participated in this study as subjects. Plank exercises(full, elbow, side, and reverse plank) were performed with four different thera-band in without(WT), red color(RT), blue color(BT), and siver color(ST). We measured the muscle activities of the erector spinae(ES), deltoideus p. acromialis(DA), external oblique(EO), rectus abdominis(RA), rectus femoris(RF), latissimus dorsi(LD), pectoralis major(PM), and biceps femoris(BF). The research findings were as follows. ES and DA muscle activities were greatest during full plank performed with the WT(p<.05). EO, RA, RF, and PM muscle activities were greatest during full plank performed with the ST(p<.05). ES and DA muscle activities were greatest during elbow plank performed with the WT(p<.05). RF and PM muscle activities were greatest during elbow plank performed with the ST(p<.05). ES, EO, RA, RF, LD, PM, and BF muscle activities were greatest during side plank performed with the ST(p<.05). DA, EO, RA, RF, LD, PM, and BF muscle activities were greatest during reverse plank performed with the ST(p<.05). These results are expected to serve as reference materials for plank exercise applications in training programs for body muscle strengthening.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 6 weeks' accelerated rehabilitation with anti-gravity treadmill exercise on VAS, ROM, isokinetic myofunction, and dynamic stability after surgery of modified brostrom operation in chronic ankle instability patients. The subjects of this study were 12 chronic ankle instability patients who underwent modified Brostrom operation(MBO) by the same doctor. 6 weeks' accelerated rehabilitation program is scheduled to perform for 60min, everyday, and also anti-gravity program performed for 15~30min, everyday. The visual analog scale(VSA) and significantly decreased(p<.001) and ROM in all of dorsal flexion, plantar flexion, inversion and eversion significantly increased(p<.05) after 6 weeks' accelerated rehabilitation with anti-gravity treadmill exercise. Both inversion and eversion peak torque at $60^{\circ}/sec$(p<.001, p<.01) and at $180^{\circ}/sec$(p<.001) significantly increased after 6 weeks' accelerated rehabilitation with anti-gravity treadmill exercise respectively. In muscle defect, although inversion(p<.01) and eversion(p<.001) at $60^{\circ}/sec$ and inversion(p<.01) at $180^{\circ}/sec$ significantly decreased, eversion at $180^{\circ}/sec$ tended to decrease but did not change significantly after 6 weeks' accelerated rehabilitation with anti-gravity treadmill exercise. The dynamic stability significantly increased after 6 weeks' accelerated rehabilitation with anti-gravity treadmill exercise(p<.001). These results suggest that 6 weeks' accelerated rehabilitation with anti-gravity treadmill exercise has positive effect of VAS, ROM, isokinetic myofunction, and dynamic stability after surgery of modified brostrom operation in chronic ankle instability patients. Therefore, we consider that the accelerated rehabilitation with anti-gravity treadmill exercise, which is safely and fast method, has effect on more faster recovery of ankle stability, play ground and normal daily activities.

The Effect of Exercise Intensity on Changes in Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase Expression in the Hippocampus and Cerebral Cortex of Obese Mice (고지방식이로 유도된 비만 마우스의 해마 및 대뇌피질에서 운동강도에 따른 nNOS 발현의 변화)

  • Recent studies reported that obesity upregulated the expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and regulated particular behavior patterns in animal models. They also reported that ameliorated the increase in nNOS expression and decreased depression and anxiolytic effects. Thus, exercise seems to be an effective strategy for improving brain function by downregulating nNOS. However, the immune response differs greatly, depending on the exercise intensity. The aim of the present study was to investigate differences in brain nNOS expression in obese C57BL/6 mice that performed exercise of different intensities. Obesity was induced in 6-wks-old mice (n=35) by feeding a 60%-fat diet for 6-wks. A control (CON) group (n=14) was fed a normal diet. At the end of the induction 6-wks period of obesity, seven animals in the CON group and obesity-induced group were sacrificed to confirm obesity induction (preliminary experiments and confirmation of visceral fat accumulation). The remaining animals were then used in an 8-wks exercise intervention. Other than the CON (n=7), the obesity-induced animals were divided into the following groups: high-fat diet (HFD, n=7), HFD-low intensity (HFD-LI, n=7, 12 m/min for 75 min), HFD-moderate intensity (HFD-MI, n=7, 15 m/min for 60 min), and HFD-high intensity (HFD-HI, n=7, 18 m/min for 50 min). The exercise was performed on an animal treadmill. The expression of the nNOS protein in the hippocampus was significantly higher in the HFD group as compared with that in the CON group (p<0.01). However, there was no difference in the hippocampal expression of the nNOS protein in the other exercise groups as compared with that in the CON group. In contrast, nNOS expression in the HFD-HI group was significantly lower than that in the HFD-LI group (p<0.05). The expression of phosphorylated Akt (pAkt) was significantly higher in all the exercise groups as compared with that in the CON and HFD groups. There was no difference in the expression of pAkt in the cerebral cortex among groups, and the expression of pAkt in the cerebellum was significantly higher in the HFD-HI group as compared with that in the CON group (p<0.05). There were also no between-group differences in pAkt expression in the cerebellum among the various exercise groups. In conclusion, nNOS seems to be overexpressed in response to obesity, and it appears to be downregulated by exercise. Relatively high-intensity exercise may be effective in improving brain function by downregulating nNOS.
