Implementation of IEEE1394 based Multimedia Streaming for Linux Environment (리눅스 환경을 위한 IEEE1394 기반 멀티미디어 스트리밍)

  • 본 논문은 리눅스 환경에서 IEEE1394의 동시 전송 프로토콜을 이용하는 멀티미디어 스트리밍 시스템의 구현에 대해 기술한다. 구현된 시스템은 DV 데이터의 스트리밍과 재생, 저장은 물론 로컬 재생과 장치 제어 기능을 갖는 사용자 프로그램과 dv1394 디바이스 드라이버로 구성된다. 스트리밍을 위한 메모리할당, 버퍼관리, 전송 데이터 형식 선언, IEEE1394 헤더 및 CIP 처리기능을 가진 dv1394 드라이버를 사용하여 드라이버와 OHCI1394 카드 사이의 스트리밍에 대한 투명성을 제공함으로써 기존의 스트리밍 시스템이 가졌던 응용 프로그램 개발의 복잡성을 줄였다. 이 시스템은 실시간 원격 모니터링이나 화상 회의 시스템, 그리고 비선형 비디오 편집 시스템에 응용될 수 있다.

Video Quality Control Scheme Based on Segment Throughput and Buffer Occupancy for Improving QoE in HTTP Adaptive Streaming Service (HTTP 적응적 스트리밍 서비스의 QoE 향상을 위한 세그먼트 처리량과 버퍼 점유율 기반의 비디오 품질 조절 기법)

  • Recently HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) adaptive streaming services have been the subject of much attention. The video quality control scheme of conventional HTTP adaptive streaming services estimates bandwidth using segment throughput and smooths out the sample of segment throughput. However, the conventional scheme has the problem of QoE (Quality of experience) degradation occurring with buffer underflow and frequent quality change due to the fixed number of samples. In order to solve this problem, we propose a video quality control scheme based on segment throughput and buffer occupancy. The proposed scheme determines the number of samples according to the variation of segment throughput. The proposed scheme also controls video quality based on the threshold of bitrate to keep stable buffer occupancy. The simulation results show that proposed scheme improves QoE by preventing buffer underflow and decreasing quality change when compared with the conventional scheme.

  • 본 논문에서는 무선 네트워크 환경에서 미디어 스트리밍의 품질을 향상시키기 위해 패킷 손실과 수신측의 버퍼 상태를 고려하여 적응적으로 전송률을 조절하는 기법을 제안하였다. 제안하는 기법은 멀티미디어 프레임을 구성하는 패킷의 일부가 손실되어도 멀티미디어의 품질에 미치는 영향이 적은 특성을 이용하여 TCP(Transmission Control Protocol)의 단일 패킷 손실이 아닌 다중 패킷 손실을 기반으로 전송률을 조절하고, 수신측의 버퍼 상태에 따라 TCP의 감소율을 조절한다. 이를 통해 안정된 멀티미디어 스트리밍을 제공하여 사용자의 품질을 향상시킨다. 실험 결과를 통해 제안한 기법이 기존 기법에 비해 부드러운 스트리밍 서비스를 제공하는 것을 확인하였다.

  • 스트리밍 XML 데이터로부터 트윅 패턴 추출시 질의와 무관한 스트리밍 데이터를 프루닝함으로써 질의 처리 비용을 줄일 수 있어야 한다. 이때 작은 버퍼 사이즈를 유지하면서도 질의 매칭 과정을 최소화하는 것이 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 이를 위한 (1) 패턴 매칭 프루닝과 (2) 재사용성 감지 기법을 제안한다. 기존 기법과 비교하여 제안하는 기법은 스트리밍 데이터의 엘리먼트 이벤트, 버퍼상태 그리고 트윅 패턴을 고려하여 질의 매칭 과정을 최소화한다. 실험결과를 통해 제안기법이 기존 기법보다 우수한 성능을 나타냄을 보인다.

  • 오늘날 인터넷에서 멀티미디어 컨텐트는 날로 다양해지고 있으며 특히 무선망에서 미디어 스트리밍에 대한 요구는 점점 커지고 있다. 그런데 무선망은 낮은 대역폭과 높은 전송 에러율로 인하여 유선망과 같은 스트리밍 서비스를 제공하기가 힘들다. 본 논문에서는 자바로 스트리밍 시스템을 구현하고, 이를 이용하여 무선망에서의 스트리밍 특성을 살펴본다. 본 논문에서 수행된 실험은 CDMA 2000 무선 인턴넷 환경을 배경으로 하며, 패킷 전송 시간(round trip time:RTT)과 패킷 손실 양상을 관찰하고 이에 따라 무선망에서 적합한 패킷 손실 복구나 버퍼링 기법의 필요성을 제안한다.

  • Existing streaming mechanisms have no consideration for the characteristics of streaming applications because they only consider network stability. In this paper, in order to overcome limitations of the previous work on video streaming, we propose a new video streaming mechanism called "HAViS(Hybrid Approach for Video Streaming)". The proposed mechanism includes more sophisticated features that consider both network and user requirements. Therefore, the HAViS mechanism improves the network stability by adjusting the sending rate of video stream based on the network state and it also provides the smooth playback by preventing the buffer underflow or overflow. Moreover, it is designed to take into consideration the streaming video content. Through the simulation, we prove that the HAViS mechanism efficiently uses the buffer resources and provides improved network stability and smooth playback.

Low Power Consumption Technology for Streaming Data Playback in the IPTV Set-top Box (IPTV 셋톱박스 환경에서 스트리밍 데이터 재생을 위한 전력 소모 감소 기법)

  • The hard disk is one of the most frequently used storage in IPTV sep-top box. It has large storage capacity and provides fast I/O speed compared to its price whereas it causes high power consumption due to mechanical characteristics of spindle motor. In order to play streaming data in the set-top box, spindle motor of hard disk keeps active mode and it causes high power consumption. In this paper, We propose an offset-buffering and multi-mode spin-down method to reduce power consumption for streaming data playback. The offset-buffering inspects the user's viewing pattern and performs buffering based on the analysis of viewing pattern. So, it can maintain the status of spindle motor as idle mode for long time. Besides, it can reduce power consumption by spinning down according to offset-buffer size. The experimental result shows that proposed offset-buffering and multi mode spin-down method is about 28.3% and 12.5% lower than the full-Buffering method in terms of the power consumption and spin-down frequency, respectively.

Design and Implementation of Buffer Cache for EXT3NS File System (EXT3NS 파일 시스템을 위한 버퍼 캐시의 설계 및 구현)

  • EXT3NS is a special-purpose file system for large scale multimedia streaming servers. It is built on top of streaming acceleration hardware device called Network-Storage card. The EXT3NS file system significantly improves streaming performance by eliminating memory-to-memory copy operations, i.e. sending video/audio from disk directly to network interface with no main memory buffering. In this paper, we design and implement a buffer cache mechanism, called PMEMCACHE, for EXT3NS file system. We also propose a buffer cache replacement method called ONS for the buffer cache mechanism. The ONS algorithm outperforms other existing buffer replacement algorithms in distributed multimedia streaming environment. In EXT3NS with PMEMCACHE, operation is 33MB/sec and random read operation is 2.4MB/sec. Also, the buffer replacement ONS algorithm shows better performance by 600KB/sec than other buffer cache replacement policies. As a result PMEMCACHE and an ONS can greatly improve the performance of multimedia steaming server which should supportmultiple client requests at the same time.

Rate Control Scheme for Improving Quality of Experience in the CoAP-based Streaming Environment (CoAP 기반의 스트리밍 환경에서 사용자 체감품질 향상을 위한 전송량 조절 기법)

  • Recently, as the number of Internet of Things users has increased, IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) has released the CoAP (Constrained Application Protocol). So Internet of Things have been researched actively. However, existing studies are difficult to adapt to streaming service due to low transmission rate that result from buffer underflow. In other words, one block is transmitted one block to client's one request according to the internet environment of limited resources. The proposed scheme adaptively adjusts the rate of CON(Confirmable) message among all messages for predicting the exact network condition. Based on this, the number of blocks is determined by using buffer occupancy rate and content download rate. Therefore it improves the quality of user experience by mitigating playback interruption. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme solves the buffer underflow problem in Internet of Things streaming environment by controlling transmission rate according to the network condition.

Link-layer Assisted Seamless Media Streaming over Mobile IP-enabled Wireless LAN (Mobile IP 지원 무선 랜 상에서 링크 계층의 지원을 통한 연속적인 미디어 스트리밍)

  • In Mobile IP-enabled wireless LAN (WLAN), packet flows are corrupted due to the handoff of a mobile node (MN) at the link and network layers, which results in burst packet losses and can cause temporary buffer underflow in a streaming client at the MN. This transient behavior hurts time-sensitive streaming media applications severely. Among many suggestions to address this handoff problem, few studies are concerned with empirical issues regarding the practical validation of handoff options on the time-sensitive streaming media applications. In this paper, targeting seamless streaming over Mobile IP-enabled WLAN, we introduce a seamless media streaming framework that estimates accurate pre-buffering level to compensate the handoff latency. In addition, we propose a link-layer (L2) assisted seamless media streaming system as a preliminary version of this framework. The proposed system is designed to reduce the handoff latency and to overcome the playback disruption from an implementation viewpoint. A packet buffering and forwarding mechanism with L2 trigger is implemented to reduce the handoff latency and to eliminate burst packet losses generated during the handoff. A pre-buffering adjustment is also performed to compensate the handoff latency. The experimental results show that the proposed approach eliminates packet losses during the handoff and thus verify the feasibility of seamless media streaming over Mobile IP-enabled WLAN.
