Strut-and-Tie Models for RC Flexural Members under Cyclic Loading (스트럿-타이 모텔을 이용한 RC 휨부재의 주기적 거동에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the procedure to find the hysteresis loop of RC member using a modified strut-and-tie model. The forces and displacements at critical points, that are initial yielding point, target displacement point, unloading elastic limit, and reloading point after pinching, are investigated with the strut-and-tie models. Using bond-slip relationship, the elastic behavior of tie element is determined. The plastic flow behavior after flexural yielding is expressed by changing the location of longitudinal strut. Determination of pinching effect completes the initial hysteresis loop, assuming that the behavior of the opposite direction is symmetrical form.

  • This paper presents an evaluation of the strength and behavior of a tested simply supported rectangular reinforced eoncrete beam and a design example of a shear wall using two-dimensional strut-tie model with finite element nonlinear analysis. Strut-tie models reflecting the actual support and loading conditions are developed for the beam and shear wall. The strut-tie model not only provides simple solutions for large number of design situations dealing with the entire range of concrete structures which appear to be rather complicated but also predicts the behavior and strength of concrete members.

  • In this study, the validity of the grid softened strut-tie model method suggested for concrete member analysis is examined through the ultimate strength evaluation of the reinforced concrete beams. The evaluated results of ultimate strength by the grid softened strut-tie model method were compared with those by the ACI 318-02 and the modified compression field theory, and European codes.

  • This study proposes the design method of the shear walls with openings using strut-and-tie models. Strut-and-tie models are constructed for opening near the middle of the wall and for opening near a wall boundary. These enables an admissible load path for the horizontal earthquake force. These models consider the size and position of opening effectively. Each model is suitable for the seismic response corresponding with lateral forces in a given direction to be considered. The proposed models are good agreements with nonlinear finite element analysis(DIANA) results.

  • Current design methods as well as the majority of the previous researches for shear strength of the reinforced concrete are based on empirical method. There is a need to propose the rational models based on analytical approach. This paper presents the modified strut-and-tie model for reinforced concrete columns, under axial compression, shear, and flexural moment, considering tensile strength of concrete. Using this model, the strength and the failure mode of R/C columns are investigated, and the proposed models are compared with test data available in the literature.

  • Although dapped-end beams are widely used in bridge and building structures, there are not any specific and reasonable design regulations on dapped-end beams. In this study, the validity of the suggested experimental and empirical design methods, conventional strut-tie model approach, and nonlinear strut-tie model approach is evaluated through the analysis of dapped-end beams tested to failure. The nonlinear strut-tie model approach proved to be the most suitable method for dapper-end beam design.

  • This paper presents, basic concepts on deformation models for D-regions critical to shear. Strut-and-tie models are used to construct for deformation estimation at yielding and ultimate deformation. A generic: strut-and-tie model is proposed to investigate deformation patterns and failure mode identification. Superposition of the basic models enables us to explain deformation limits of arch action and truss action. Displacement at yielding is assessed by consideration of deformation of reinforcing steel only while the ultimate displacement is calculated by limits of ultimate strain of concrete in compression and failure mechanisms.

  • Currently, the design methods for coping of concrete piers predict over-reinforcements. In this study comparison and analysis of internal and external design codes is performed.   • In this paper, the linear and nonlinear strut-tie model approaches for the analysis and design of concrete structures are suggested. The validity of the approaches are examined through the strength analysis of four dapped-end beams tested to failure. According to the analysis results, the nonlinear strut-tie model approach which takes the various characteristics of nonlinear behaviors into account in the analysis and design of structural concrete and predicts the strength of structural concrete proven to be an effective method for structural analysis and design.

  • Deep pile caps usually contain no transverse shear reinforcement and only small percentages of longitudinal reinforcement. The current design procedures including ACI 318-02 for the pile caps do not provide engineers with a clear understanding of the physical behavior of deep pile caps. In this study, the failure strengths of nine pile cap specimens tested to failure were evaluated using 3-dimensional strut-tie models. The analysis results obtained from the present study were compared with those obtained from several design methods, and the validity of the present method implementing 3-dimensional strut-tie models was examined.
