  • Recently, the near surface mounted (NSM) FRP strengthening technique has been actively applied to deteriorated concrete structures for rehabilitation purposes. However, the use of this conventional NSM technique could be restricted due to the insufficient height or strength of the concrete cover. In this study, the stirrup-Cutting Near Surface Mounted(CNSM) technique was considered as an alternative, whereby NSM strips are placed at a deeper level, namely at the level of the main steel reinforcement. A flexural test of a concrete beam strengthened with CNSM technique was performed and the results were then compared to those for a concrete beam strengthened by the conventional NSM technique. The embedment length of the CFRP strips was varied in order to increase the effect of the anchoring depth of the NSM and CNSM CFRP strips in the beam specimens. From the results of the test, the beam with the CNSM CFRP strip showed typical structural behavior similar to that of the beam with the NSM CFRP strip. Moreover, there was no apparent structural degradation resulting from the stirrup partial-cutting. Consequently, the CNSM strengthening technique can be suitably utilized for extensively damaged concrete structures where it is difficult to apply the conventional NSM technique.

  • An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the breakout strength of stirrup-reinforced cast-in anchors under dynamic shear loadings. The shear loadings were applied in the manner specified in the ACI 355.2 and ETAG 001 for the seismic qualification tests. Test specimens were fabricated with M36 anchor (edge distance, 180mm) reinforced with D10 stirrups (spacing, 100mm). The specimens reached almost the breakout strength and thereafter fracture of anchor occurred. Additional tests with M42 anchor (edge distance, 160mm) reinforced with D6 bars (spacing, 100mm) were also conducted. The experimental results showed that the dynamic shear strength was not less than the static resistance. Based on the test results, it was shown that ACI 318 and ETAG 001 specifications estimate the breakout strength of stirrup-reinforced anchors conservatively as more reinforcement is provided.

  • An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the static shear strength of stirrup-reinforced cast-in anchors. The test parameters considered herein are an existence of front bearing bar and concrete crack. M36 anchor was used with an edge distance of 180mm. HD-10 bars were used for all reinforcing bars and the stirrups were placed with 100mm spacing. The shear resistance increased by 16% when the front bearing bar was installed. Meanwhile, the resistance reduced only 5% in the cracked concrete compared with the uncracked concrete. The test results showed that ACI 318 and ETAG 001 specifications could estimate the shear strength of stirrup-reinforced anchors conservatively and a rational method was proposed. A consideration on the fracture strength of stirrup-reinforced anchor is also given.

  • In this study, pull-out tests were performed to investigate the effects of stirrup spacing, rebar diameter, and corrosion rate on bond strength of deformed bars in reinforced concrete. Twelve pull-out specimens with different stirrup spacing, rebar diameter, and corrosion rate were prepared following the RILEM RC6 guidelines. The test results showed that the bond strength of specimens with stirrups increased when the corrosion rate was less than 3%, whereas it decreased when the corrosion rate was more than 3%. On the other hand, the bond strength of specimens without stirrups decreased as the corrosion rate increased. The effect of rebar diameter was less significant compared to those of stirrup spacing and corrosion rate. A bond strength model for pull-out specimens was proposed considering stirrup ratio and corrosion rate, and the model showed the lowest error among the previous models.

  • The near surface mounted (NSM) FRP strengthening method has been conventionally applied for strengthening the deteriorated concrete structures. The NSM strengthening method, however, has been issued with the problem of limitation of the cutting depth which is usually considered as concrete cover depth. This may be related with degradation of bonding performance in long-term service state. To improve the debonding problem, in this study, the Stirrup partial-cutting NSM (SCNSM) strengthening method using CFRP plate was newly developed. SCNSM strengthening method can be effectively applied to the deteriorated concrete structure without any troubles of insufficient cutting depth. To experimentally verify the structural behavior, the flexural test of the concrete beam by using the SCNSM strengthening method was conducted with the test variable as the strengthening length (32%, 48%, 70%, 80%, 96% of span length). In the result of the test, the NSM and SCNSM strengthened specimen showed similar structural behavior with load-deflection, mode of failure. Additionally, there was no apparent structural degradation by the stirrup partial-cutting. Consequently, it was evaluated that the SCNSM strengthening method can be useful for seriously damaged concrete structures that is hard to apply the conventional NSM strengthening method for increasing the structural capacity.

  • This paper focuses on the experimental study for investigating the performance for lap splice of hooked or headed reinforcement in beam with different depths. In the experiment, seven specimens, with its variables as the lap length of headed or hooked bar, the existence of stirrups, etc., was manufactured. Bending test was conducted. Lap strengths by test were compared with the theoretical model based on KCI2012. The result showed that the cracks at failure mode occurred along the axial direction to a headed bar. The initial stiffness and the stiffness after initial crack were similar for all specimens. For HS series specimens without stirrups, a 25% increase in lap length was increased 11.8~18.1% maximum strengths. For HH series specimens without stirrups, a increase in lap length did not affect the maximum strengths because of the pryout failure of headed bar. For HS series specimens, the theoretical lap strengths based on KCI2012 considering the B grade lap and the reduction factor for stirrup were evaluated. They are smaller than the test strengths and can ensure the safety in terms of strength capacity. For HH series specimens, the stirrups in the lap zone are needed to prevent the pryout behaviour of headed bar.

  • KCI 2012 and ACI318-11 contains development length provisions for the use of headed deformed bars in tension and does not allow their tension lap splices. In ACI318-11, the confinement factor, such as transverse reinforcement factor, is not used to calculate the development length of headed bars. The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate the effect of confinement details to the lap splice performance of headed deformed reinforcing bars in grade SD400 and SD500. The confinement details are stirrups and tie-down bars in lap zone. Test results showed that specimens with only stirrups had the brittle failure and could not increase lap strengths, and that specimens with composite confinements by stirrups and tie-down bars had the flexural strengths over than nominal flexural strengths. Stirrups with tie-down bars can have an effect on improvement in lap splice of headed bars in grade SD400 and SD500.

  • A slab-column connection is susceptible to brittle punching shear failure, which may result in the necessity of shear reinforcement. In the present study, to investigate the earthquake resistance of newly developed lattice shear reinforcement, experimental study was performed for interior slab-column connections subjected to cyclic loading. For comparison, specimens with existing shear reinforcement method such as stud rail, shear band and stirrup were also tested. The test result showed that the structural capacity of the lattice shear reinforcement was superior to those of the existing methods and was greater than the code-specified strength. On the other hand, the existing methods did not significantly improve the shear strength of the specimens. The shear strengths of the existing methods were much less than the code-specified shear strength.

  • There is mounting recognition among concrete researchers that fiber reinforcement makes up for the inherent weakness in resisting tensile force of structural concrete. In practice of application of the fiber to concrete, however, several problems still remain to solve for assuring a uniform mix quality. The Kagome truss that is widely used in mechanical engineering field seems to be a good replacement for the steel fiber. This paper presents the test results of a pilot study for the concrete members reinforced by Kagome truss which is a periodic cellular metal of wire-woven. Three types of Kagome truss bulk were prefabricated and filled with normal concrete to make small-scaled test beams. The beams reinforced by a normal steel stirrups were also tested up to failure to compare the behavioral results. From the results obtained, it is appeared that comparing with beams reinforced by normal stirrups, the beams reinforced by Kagome truss showed better performance in load carrying capacity as well as ductility. Therefore, the Kagome truss is proved to be a good web shear reinforcing material.

  • This paper concerns the flexural behavior of hybrid steel fiber-reinforced ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) beams. It presents experimental research results of hybrid steel fiber-reinforced UHPC with steel fiber content of 1.5% by volume and steel reinforcement ratio of less than 0.02. This study aims at providing realistic information about UHPC beams in bending in order to establish a reasonable prediction model for flexural resistance in structural code in the future. The experimental results show that hybrid steel fiber-reinforced UHPC is in favor of cracking resistance and ductility of beams. The ductility indices range through 9.2 to 15.2, which means high ductility of UHPC. Also, the flexural capacity of beam which contains stirrups in pure bending zone is similar to that of beam which does not contain stirrups in pure bending zone. This result represents that the flexural capacity is not affected by the presence of stirrups whose spacing is 150 mm in bending zone.
