Effects of Lifestyle Habits, Smartphone Addiction, and Mental Health on Irritable Bowel Syndrome in College Students (대학생의 생활습관, 스마트폰 중독, 정신건강이 과민대장증후군에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The aim of the research was to define the effects of lifestyle habits, smartphone addiction, and mental health on irritable bowel syndrome in college students Methods: The data was collected through convenience sampling of 185 college students. To draw conclusions from the data, we used statistical analysis of independent t-test, χ2 test, Fisher's exact test, and multiple logistic regression using SPSS/WIN 24.0. Results: There were significant differences in gender, grade, major, mental health, and smartphone addiction according to the presence of irritable bowel syndrome. Variables identified as influencing factors were gender (OR=4.03, CI: 1.42~11.49) and mental health (OR=1.05, CI: 1.01~1.08). Conclusion: In order to alleviate and improve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, it is necessary to assess and continuously manage mental health, such as stress, anxiety and depression of college students, which are the factors that could be intervened.

The Differences in Smartphone Addiction Symptom between Highly Addicted and Non-addicted College Students (스마트폰 고중독 대학생과 비중독 대학생의 중독증후군 차이)

  • Purpose: This survey was to investigate the differences in smartphone addiction symptoms by the level of addiction among college students in S. Korea. Methods: Two hundred and thirteen university students survey data was collected from December 5th to 9th of 2011 using Smartphone Addiction Scale. 25.3% (n=54) of total respondents were categorized as highly addicted and 28.17% (n=60) were as non-addicted group. Results: There were significant differences in total addiction symptom scores, daily life disorders, loss of self control, pathological concentration, and compulsive symptoms between two groups. There were significantly differences in total addiction symptoms, daily life disorders, loss of self control, pathological concentration, and compulsive symptoms between two groups. Highly addicted group were significantly higher in total addiction symptom scores (3.26 times), daily life disorders (4.96 times), loss of self control (3.07 times), pathological concentration (3.07 times), and compulsive symptoms (2.86 times) compared to non-addicted one. Highly addicted group had significantly higher daily usages of smartphone and were more satisfied with smartphone than non-addicted group. The purpose to use was related to academic works rather than games or entertainment. However satisfaction on academic achievement was very low. Conclusion: The smartphone addicted symptoms related to academic works were significantly high in highly addicted college students so that it disturbed their daily life and psycho-social health in general. It is clear that the highly addicted college students need urgent distinctive interventions such as creative academic guides.

U-health Service Model for Managing Health of Chronic Patients in Multi-platform Environment (멀티플랫폼 환경의 만성 질환자 건강관리를 위한 유헬스 서비스 모델)

  • U-health services have been progressed as treatment and management for specific diseases and prevention services for providing the behavior management to customers according to the increase in chronic patients. The conventional U-health services provide required services and bio-information monitoring only through remote diagnoses and counsels and that represent limitations in preventing and managing metabolic syndrome patients like chronic patients. Thus, in this study a multi platform based U-health service model for managing the health of chronic patients is proposed. The multi-platform based U-health service model can provide continuous health information, diet, and exercise services regardless of the location of customers through PCs and smart phones. In addition, it is able to provide prescription services to doctors and nurses using a CDS (Clinical Decision Support) module based on clinical information. Doctors can identify the life pattern of patients through a behavior modification program and provide customized services to patients. The U-health service model provides effective services in multi-platform environments to customers and that will improve the health of chronic patients.

A Study on Relationship between Near Work and Eye Fatigue (근업시간과 눈 피로도와의 관련성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate eye fatigue and analyze symptoms of visual discomfort according to near work in young adults. A survey was conducted on 347 young adults aged 25.37 years (142 male and 205 female participants). The eye fatigue using Conlon questionnaire were surveyed and near work was investigated amounts of daily computer and smartphone. The score of eye fatigue was $13.65{\pm}7.11$ in less than 2 h/d, $16.83{\pm}6.77$ in 2~4 h/d, $18.88{\pm}6.60$ in 4~6 h/d, and $18.83{\pm}5.62$ in more than 6 hours(p=0.001). Also, headache(p<0.030), re-reading(p<0.036), and movement and fading(p<0.001) symptoms increased according to amounts of near work.

Effect of Ischemic Compression on Sternomastoidcleido Muscle on Chronic pain in Upper Trapezius Muscle (목빗근에 대한 허혈성 압박법이 위등세모근의 만성 통증에 미치는 영향)

  • Recently, incorrect and unhealthy postures have become increasingly prevalent due to reasons such as smartphone use. Consequently, imbalanced muscle contraction occurs. In particular, if the oblique muscle is contracted, the accessory nerve will be compressed, causing ischemic pain in the upper trapezius muscle. To investigate the effect on pain in the upper trapezius muscle, this study applied the ischemic compression method to the accessory nerve capture point at the 1/3-point of the oblique cervical muscle. In this study, the ischemic compression method was applied to eight women twice a week for four weeks, and pain was evaluated before, immediately after, and three weeks after application. The visual analogue scale, McGill Pain Questionnaire, and pressure dynamometer were used to evaluate subjects' pain. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that the pain was significantly reduced after treatment, and that the pain reduction was still effective three weeks after completion of the intervention, indicating that the intervention on the accessory nerve compression point on the oblique cervical muscle was both effective and long-lasting for pain reduction in the upper trapezius muscle. Future studies should increase the number of subjects to check not only pain reduction in the upper trapezius muscle, but also improvement of neck function.
