  • In this study, numerical analysis was performed on three shapes of heat transfer plates (chevron, wave and dimple type), which are currently used as fillers of cooling towers. Results show that heat transfer rates per consumed power were larger for enhanced plates as compared with that of plain plate. Highest heat transfer coefficient was obtained for wave shape followed by chevron and dimple shape. For wave shape, cross corrugations induced significant mixing of fluids, which enhanced the heat transfer. Friction factor yielded a similar trend with the heat transfer coefficient. However, heat transfer rate and pressure drop per sheet was the largest for chevron shape, due to the largest heat transfer area per sheet.

  • This research investigates the internal flow and heat transfer in a plate heat exchanger with chevron shape by utilizing the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The basic unit of the plate heat exchanger is generally composed of a hot channel, an intermediate chevron plate, and a cold channel. Several studies have reported experimental and numerical simulation of heat transfer and pressure drop. This study focused on the detailed numerical simulation of flow and heat transfer in the complicated chevron shape channel. The long chevron plate was designed to include 16 chevron patterns. For proper mesh resolution, the number of cells was determined after the grid sensitivity test. The working fluid is water, and its properties are defined as a function of temperature. The Reynolds number ranges from 900 to 9,000 in the simulation. A realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and non-equilibrium wall function are properly considered for the turbulent flow. The friction factors and heat transfer coefficient are validated by comparing them with existing empirical correlations, and other patterned flow phenomena are also investigated.

  • In this study, experiments were performed on air heater samples with three different shapes (chevron, wave and dimple type) to reduce the plumes from cooling towers. The tests were conducted for a range of frontal air velocities of 1~3 m/s and water flow rate 0.19~0.33 kg/s. The results showed that the heat transfer rate increased with increasing air velocity or water flow rate. The air-side pressure drop also increased with increasing air velocity. At the same frontal air velocity, the highest heat transfer rate was obtained for the chevron sample (1.5~1.7 times compared to that of the plate sample), followed by the dimple, wave and plate samples. The heat transfer rate per unit power consumption was also 15% larger than that of the dimple sample. On the other hand, there was no noticeable difference between the other samples.

  • The high-strength aluminum alloy 7075-T651 was used to observe the fatigue-crack-propagation behavior for the various stress ratios with constant amplitude loading and thus to predict the fatigue life. With a chevron notch in the specimen the fatigue-crack-propagation behavior of through crack was investigated. Crack propagation behavior of through crack in the depth direction and crack growth of weldments were experimentally studied. Base material heat affected zone and weld material were considered in the fracture of weldments. The change of crack-propagation length with respect to several parameters such as stress intensity factor range(ΔK) effective stress intensity factor range(ΔKeff)ration of effective stress intensity factor range(U) stress intensity factor of crack opening point(K op) maximum stress intensity factor(K max) and number of cycles(Nf)was determined. The crack length of through crack of weldments was 2.4mm and the remaining part was a base material. The experiment was accomplished by making the crack propagate near the base material.

  • Experimental analysis has been carried out on noise reduction of subsonic jet flow with chevron nozzle to investigate relationships between geometry variation of chevron nozzles and jet noise reduction. Including base nozzle, seven nozzles are tested at Mach number 0.9. Parametric variables are chevron count, chevron length, and chevron shape. From these experiment, the more chevron count increase, the more jet noise reduction gain. Varying the chevron length, short chevron nozzle increase the jet noise at certain direction all the more. Chevron shape is also considered as important factor to reduce the jet noise.
