  • This research presents the results of the strength and drying shrinkage properties to study the effect of ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS), fly ash(FA) and calcium sulfoaluminate(CSA) for activated ternary blended slag cement. The activated ternary blended cement(ATBC) mortar were prepared having a constant water-cementitious materials ratios of 0.4. The GGBFS contents ratios of 100%, 80%, 70% and 60%, FA replacement ratios of 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%, CSA ratios of 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% were designed. The superplasticizer of polycarboxylate type were used. The activator was used of 10% sodium hydroxide(NaOH) + 10% sodium silicate($Na_2SiO_3$) by weight of binder. Test were conducted for mini slump, setting time, V-funnel, water absorption, compressive strength and drying shrinkage. According to the experimental results, the contents of superplasticizer, V-funnel and compressive strength increases with an increase in CSA contents for all mixtures. Moreover, the setting time, water absorption ratios and drying shrinkage ratio decrease with and increase in CSA. One of the major reason for the increase of strength and decrease of drying shrinkage is the accelerated reactivity of GGBFS with alkali activator and CSA. The CSA contents is the main parameter to explain the strength development and decreased drying shrinkage in the ATBC.

  • This study investigates the mechanical properties and reaction products of activated slag pastes depending on gypsum presence and calcium carbonate addition in terms of compressive strength tests and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The chemicals of CaO and NaOH are used as activators with different two dosages. The reaction of CaO-activated slag without gypsum just accelerated by addition of calcium carbonate at early ages, but no improvement was observed at later ages. On the other hand, the mechanical properties of CaO-activated slag pastes with gypsum were improved with calcium carbonate, enhancing the stability of ettringite. The variation of mechanical properties of NaOH-activated slag pastes was negligible depending on calcium carbonate addition in case of no gypsum. The addition of calcium carbonate into NaOH-activated slag pastes with gypsum deteriorated its mechanical properties due to the ion competition between CO32- ions and SO32- ions, decreasing crystallinity of reaction products.

  • When hot weather concrete is utilized, the cooling methods of cooling pipe, liquid nitrogen, ice, etc., are used to prevent the poor consistency and cold joint due to high temperature. These methods, however, spike the production cost and energy consumption, and make quality control difficult. Among these methods is one that involves the use of a retarder. Although economical, retarder is caused difficulty of retarded hardening and setting time control due to inaccurate weighing and poor working condition. Therefore, how to make a tablet for hot weather concrete, as with the existing pharmacy and foods, is discussed in this study, including the following items: mortar setting time, flow test by elapsed time, physical and mechanical properties of concrete. As a result, gluconic acid is superior to lignosulfonic acid and the possibility of using them for such purpose without quality degradation was confirmed in this study, when retarder is tabletting.

  • This study conducted a series of studies to offer a novel method of using CBS-dust that produced as by-product in the manufacture of cement. Four different contents of BS and CBS-dust were adopted for test parameters of this study. Mortar with 50% of W/B was fabricated. First, in the case of the fresh mortar, the flow decreased as the CBS-dust replacement rate increased, but the binder composition ratio BS 45% and 65% showed higher fl ow than Pl ain when repl acing CBS-dust 5%. In the case of air content, overall, the tendency was proportional to the CBS-dust replacement rate, and chloride tended to exceed the reference value at all replacement rates except for the CBS-dust 0% replacement. The compressive strength of the hardened mortar shows the resul t that the strength is improved when the CBS-dust is repl aced by 5% to 10%, and the CSH gel and structure formation is confirmed by microstructure analysis through the hydration reaction when the CBS-dust is replaced. Therefore, for a given condition CBS-dust is used as a early-strength admixture in a concrete secondary product that uses a large amount of admixture without reinforcing bars it can be an effective method for enhancing the strength of concrete as an alkali activator.

  • Cement industries are considered key industries for reducing carbon emissions, and efforts are off the ground to reduce the use of cement in the concrete sector. As a part of this effort, research is off the ground to utilize a large amount of industrial by-products that can be used as a substitute for a part of cement. Concrete using industrial by-products has advantages such as durability, environment friendliness and economical efficiency, but there are problems such as retarding and early-age strength deterioration. Therefore, this study aimed to reduce the use of cement and solve the problem of early-age strength deterioration while using fly ash, which is an industrial by-product. Accordingly, it was confirmed that the strength was improved at all ages irrespective of curing temperature by accelerating the hydration reaction by using high fineness cement. Subsequently, high fineness cement was partially replaced with fly ash and the strength development characteristics were examined. As a result, it was possible to exhibit strength equal to or higher than ordinary portland cement even at the early age. Also, it was confirmed that even when the fly ash is replaced by 30%, it is possible to shorten the time for dismantling the forms of vertical and horizontal members.

  • When GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) with high blaine is incorporated in concrete, compressive strength in the initial period is improved, but several engineering problems arise such as heat of hydration and quality control. In this paper, compressive strength and durability performance of concrete with 3,000 Grade-low fineness slag are evaluated. Three conditions of concrete mixtures are considered considering workability, and the related durability tests are performed. Although the strength of concrete with 3,000 Grade slag is slightly lower than the OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) concrete at the age of 28 days, but insignificant difference is observed in long-term compressive strength due to latent hydration activity. The durability performances in concrete with low fineness slag show that the resistances to carbonation and freezing/thawing action are slightly higher than those of concrete with high fineness slag, since reduced unit water content is considered in 3,000 Grade slag mixture. For the long-term age, the chloride diffusion coefficient of the 3000-grade slag mixture is reduced to 20% compared to the OPC mixture, and the excellent chloride resistance are evaluated. Compared with concrete with OPC and high fineness GGBFS, concrete with lower fineness GGBFS can keep reasonable workability and durability performance with reduced water content.

  • To develop environmental-friendly insulating composite materials, natural cellulose and porous ceramic balls were used as core materials and activated Hwangtoh was used as a binder. Various specimens were prepared with different water/binder ratios and core material/binder ratios. The physical properties of these specimens were then investigated through compressive strengths, flexural strengths, absorption test, hot water resistance test, pore analysis, thermal conductivity, and observation of micro-structures using scanning electron microscope. Results showed that the maximum compressive strength varied appreciably with the water/binder ratios and core material/binder ratios, but the flexural strength increased with the core material/binder ratios regardless of water/binder ratios. The compressive strength and the flexural strength measured after the hot water resistance test decreased remarkably compared to those measured before test. The pore analysis measured after the hot water resistance test showed that total pore volume, porosity and average pore diameter decreased, while bulk density increased by the acceleration of hydration reaction of binder in the hot water. The thermal conductivity decreased gradually with an increase of core material/binder ratios. It can be evaluated that the composite insulation materials having good insulating properties and mechanical strengths can be used in the field.

  • The duration of raising seedling of infant rice seedling(IRS) in machine transplanting is 8 to 10 days. This experiment was conducted to investigate the minimum duration of IRS's raising seedling and its method by the combination of several treatments such as plant growth regulator, root-break-seat and temperature. The rice seeds of Hwaseongbyeo was soaked in the solution of metalaxyl for 24 hours at room temperature. Metalaxyl (25% wettable powder), a fungicide, was used in 1, 000 times dilution as a promting substance on the root-mat formation of IRS. The application of fungicide in the nursery soil for the controlling of damping-off and physiologyical seedling rot was omitted due to the metalaxyl seed-soaking treatment. Seeding rate was 220g per seed tray (30$\times$60$\times$3cm). To promote the root-mat formation of IRS, the sheets of polyethylene vinyl and absorptive paper were placed bottom the seed tray. The root-mat formation of IRS was promoted at higher temperature and longer duration of raising seedling. The metalaxyl-treated seeds markedly increased the root length and rooting activity of IRS as compared with the control, thus the root-mat formation was excellent. The absorptive paper with polyethylene vinyl as root-break-seat showed a better root-mat formation compared with control, polyethylene vinyl, alone. The minimum duration of raising seedling of IRS was 5 days after sowing based on the root-mat formation and seedling height under the condition of metalaxyl seed treatment, absorptive paper with polyethylene vinyl as a root-break-seat and the raising seedling temperature 30/2$0^{\circ}C$ (day /night).

  • Utilizing admixture, which is one of the raw material replacement method in the cement industry, is expected to be easily and quickly put to practical use as it is relatively more accessible than other methods. Among cement admixtures, limestone powder is reported to be able to improve cement performance through nucleation effects, chemical effects, and filler effects, so it is a material expected to be suitable as a cement admixture. Meanwhile, as high-quality limestone is depleted around the world, the use of limestone with clay or high magnesia (MgO) content is becoming increasingly inevitable. Therefore, in this study, we attempted to evaluate the suitability of limestone cement as a admixture by measuring the basic properties of limestone cement mixed with limestone of different qualities commonly used in Korea. As a result, the effect of alite reaction promotion was confirmed regardless of the chemical composition of the limestone binder. However, the dilution effect depending on the substitution amount was greater than the chemical composition. It is believed that normal-grade limestone can be used as a mixture as long as the limestone content in cement is within 15 % in this scope of study. In the future, we plan to evaluate the impact of the chemical composition of the limestone mixture through additional experiments depending on the chemical composition of cement.

  • In this study, the basic physical properties and microstructure of concrete interlocking blocks with amount of different CO2 gas injection were analyzed according to determine the applicability of In-situ carbonation technology to construction secondary products. The amount of carbon dioxide gas injection was selected as 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 wt.% compared to cement amount. A lab-scale press equipment was designed to apply developed carbonation technology to real construction site. And mixer for stable CO2 gas injection was designed. Using the designed devices, CO2 gas injected samples were created and physical property of samples were performed. As a result of the physical property test, as the CO2 injection amount increased to 0.3 %, it showed higher strength behavior compared to the original mix. And more than 0.5 % samples showed lower strength behavior than original sample, but they satisfied the standard of concrete interlocking block. This results were determined that CO2 injection contributed to the creation of hydrates such as C-S-H. Therefore, the possibility of applying carbonation technology, which injects CO2 during mixing, to various secondary construction products was confirmed.
