  • Adiabatic temperature rise test for predicting heat of hydration in mass concrete is especially inconvenient in the field. In order to overcome the problem, the equipment to effectively and conveniently measure semi-adiabatic temperature change was developed. The main objective of this paper is to propose a new and simple equipment for measuring semi-adiabatic temperature rise by using insulation bottles. In order to predict exact heat loss of concrete using this device, it is required to assume the specific heat loss coefficient of the device by water temperature change inside the experimental device. According to experimental and analytical results, the adiabatic temperature rise does not have significant differences in changes of temperature and humidity of air, as well as initial temperature of water. By comparing adiabatic temperature rise tests, the equipment for measuring semi-adiabatic temperature change can be used to predict the hydration heat of concrete within sufficient accuracy.

  • High molecular weight poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel to be expected as a candidate material for the wound-dressing was successfully prepared by electron beam (EB) irradiation. To produce PVA hydrogels with various gel fractions, degrees of swelling in water, gel strengths, and elongations, two different number-average degrees of polymerization [($P_n$)s] of PVA were adapted such as 1700 and 4000, and the PVA solution concentration and irradiation dose of EB were controlled to range of 5 $\sim$ 20% and 30 $\sim$ 100 kGy, respectively. The gel fraction and strength of PV A hydrogel were increased with increasing molecular weight of PVA, solution concentration, and irradiation dose of EB. On the contrary, the degree of swelling and elongation of PVA hydrogel were decreased. The thermal property and crystallinity related to degree of crosslinking of PVA hydrogel were examined by the analyses of differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction.

  • Chlorine dioxide has an excellent ability to sterilize and deodorize and is harmless to humans. However, it is very unstable and explosive as it is highly concentrated, thus its use in the air clean filed has been limited. Therefore, there is a demand to develop the system to produce a low concentration of chlorine dioxide sustainedly. Here, for a first step in the development of the system on the sustained production of chlorine dioxide, the use of polymer hydrogels was investigated. P(MMA-co-HEMA) hydrogel particles were prepared via dispersion photopolymerization and sodium chlorite and citric acid were loaded respectively in the hydrogel particles. When sodium chlorite and citric acid were reacted with not loaded in the hydrogels, rapid production of chlorine dioxide occurred and the concentration of chlorine dioxide decreased over time. However, when sodium chlorite and citric acid were loaded respectively in the hydrogel particles and reacted, chlorine dioxide was produced slowly and sustainedly because the release of sodium chlorite and citric acid from the hydrogels delayed the reaction between them. The result shows that the use of P(MMA-co HEMA) hydrogels has the potential to develop the system on the sustained production of chlorine dioxide.

  • PC-type copolymers were synthesized using MPEG(polyethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate, Mn=2080) to different mole ratios of mono-carboxylic acid(AA : acylic acid). The mole ratios of AA were 2, 3, 4 and PC-type terpolymers were synthesized using mono-, dicarboxylic acid(ITA : itaconic acid MAL : maleic acid) with the same graft chain. To investigate effects of PC-type co-, ter-polymers on the hydration of cement experiments involving FT-IR, XRD, DSC, SEM have been analysed with cement paste specimens to 1, 3, 28 day. The hydration reaction rate of cement paste was slightly delayed at 1 day, due to increase in molar ratio of [AA]/[MPEG], it was recovered in the days after and the copolymer was more active than the terpolymer, because of low carboxylic acid content PC-type copolymers applied 2AA-type were fastest copolymer on hydration reaction of cement paste to 3 day and the more AA mole ratios increased, the more hydration was retarded.

  • The hydrogels of hydrophilic three-dimensional methacrylate polymer networks were prepared from 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDGMA) in aqueous solution. The interaction of water with the hydrophilic methacrylate polymers in the hydrogels was studied by pulse NMR spectroscopy. The spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) of low water content hydrogels showed the different double environments, resulting in two spin-lattice relaxation times (T1a and T1b). The values of T1a and T1b were 16.4${\times}$10-3 sec and 58.2${\times}$10-3 sec for a p(HEMA)-(10% H2O) system, and 13.2${\times}$10-3 sec and 23.1${\times}$10-3 sec for a crosslinked EGDMA-p(HEMA)-(10% H2O) system, respectively. The spin-spin relaxation times (T2) of the hydrogels were also measured as a function of water content in the p(HEMA)-(H2O)n and crosslinked EGDMA-p(HEMA)-(H2O)n system. The values of T2 were approximately 10 times less than those of T1 in agreement with the principles of spin relaxations.

  • In this study, the basic properties of cement paste with varying replacement ratio of micro-silica and fumed silica were analyzed to determine the suitability of nanomaterials for use as concrete admixtures. Referring to the ultra-high strength mix, the fluidity of cement paste was evaluated according to the nanomaterial replacement rate and the compressive strength characteristics were compared and analyzed. The related properties of the reactive nanomaterials to the cement hydrate were analyzed using SEM and EDS to observe the microstructure and identify the components of the hydration product. The reactive nanomaterials used in this study had tap densities between 0.061 and 0.264 g/cm3, which were lower than SF. Micro silica exhibited excellent compressive strength properties with increasing replacement ratio, but fumed silica, unlike micro white, obtained excellent compressive strength at replacement ratio of 0.01~0.1 %. The same trend was observed in the hydration characterization.

  • Hydration of nitriles in the environmentally benign neutral conditions is the most economical and attractive way to produce amides. Substantial research works have been carried out to apply the solid metal oxides and transition metal supported catalytic systems to promote the hydration of nitriles. The most significant feature of these catalysts is the applicability to a wide range of substrates including aromatic, alicyclic, hetero-atomic, and aliphatic nitriles. These catalysts are also characterized by the easy isolation from the reaction mixture and the reusability while maintaining the high catalytic activity. This review accounts over the detailed survey of the metal oxide and solid supported metal catalysts for preparing amides from the hydration of nitriles.

  • Adiabatic temperature rise and autogenous shrinkage experiments were performed for three silica-fume included mass concrete mixtures and a reference mixture without silica-fume, in order to investigate the influence of silica-fume on the hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage properties of mass concrete, and to examine applicability of silica-fume to mass concrete. It was revealed from the experiment that, for mass concrete, the rate of hydration was hardly increased while the maximum adiabatic temperature rise decreased about 5$^{\circ}$C by the addition of silica-fume, and the amount of autogenous shrinkage was almost the same regardless of silica-fume replacement. These facts imply that silica-fume can enhance the resistance of mass concrete to temperature cracking as well as the durability.

  • Paper industry discharges many by-products and quantity of PSA (Paper sludge ash) has been increased. In this study, hydration water was added to PSA for use as cement admixture. PSA with added water was mixed with anhydrite and this mixture was used as cement substitute. Physical properties of PSA cement were changed by contents of PSA, but PSA cement containing PSA less than 10% had similar properties to those of OPC. Compressive strength of PSA cement mortar had a certain relationship with $Ca(OH)_2$ content. Compressive strength at 3 days increased, as $Ca(OH)_2$ content increased. However, the strength at 28 days increased, as $Ca(OH)_2$ content decreased.
