Recently, interest in Tie-cell wave-dissipating blocks that can compensate for the disadvantages of block-type breakwaters and provide economically effective design is increasing. Tie-cell wave-dissipating block has high activity resistance due to its structure in which each block is held together by a pile. In this study, through the laboratory model experiments, it was possible to confirm the increase in lateral resistance of the Tie-cell wave-dissipating blocks due to the penetration of the piles. The lateral resistance of the piles appeared almost constant regardless of the overburden load of the blocks. The lateral resistance shared by the piles changed depending on the increase or decrease in the lateral resistance of the friction between blocks. In the experiment in which two piles were penetrated, the overall lateral resistance was larger than the case a single pile was used, but the resistance behavior of the piles was different.
While the existing pile foundation had the role of supporting the superstructure or reducing the earth pressure, recently there are cases where it is integrated with the superstructure to increase the lateral resistance. This study aims to evaluate a lateral resistance of block-type breakwaters with group piles by modelling experiments. The lateral resistance and bending moments of the piles by penetrated depths for the piles were measured. As a result, it was found that the lateral resistance increased as the depth of embedment of the group piles. In particular, the lateral resistance was 1.52 times greater in the case where the pile embedded up to the riprap layer than the case where the pile was embedded into the block. For the bending moment, the rear piles ware larger than the front piles, and the outside piles were larger than the inside piles. The location of the maximum bending moment in the ground was shown at the interface between the riprap layer and the natural ground.

Recently, research on the lateral resistance of pile foundations has been actively conducted. In experimental studies on the lateral resistance of pile foundations, displacement control or load control methods are used. However, in the case of the displacement control method, the lateral resistance of the pile varies depending on the rate of the load applied to the pile. Therefore, this study seeks to determine the change in lateral resistance of pile foundations according to lateral loading rate through model experiments. The experimental results showed that the lateral resistance of the pile tended to decrease as the lateral loading rate applied to the pile head increased. In order to confirm this, a model experiment of the side change of the ground and pile according to the loading rate was additionally conducted. Through inverse analysis, the change in the depth of the rotation point according to the lateral loading rate was identified. Through the change in the lateral resistance of the pile foundation and the depth of the rotating point according to the lateral loading rate, it was proposed to test the loading rate within 1.5 mm/min during the lateral loading test of the pile.
This study conducted to obtain the lateral resistance of a wind power foundation reinforced with piles through an model experiment. In particular, the lateral resistance of the foundation was compared with the existing gravity-type wind power foundation by integrating the pile, the wind power generator foundation, and the rocky ground. In addition, changes in the lateral resistance and bending moment of the pile were analyzed by embeded depths of the pile. As a result, it was found that the lateral resistance increased with the depth of embedment of the piles. In particular, the pile's resistance increase ratio was 2.11 times greater in the case where the pile embedded up to the rock layer than the case where the pile was embedded into the riprap. It was found that the location of the maximum bending moment occurred at the interface between the wind turbine foundation and the riprap layer when the pile embeded to the rock layer. Through this, as the lateral resistance of the wind power foundation reinforced with piles is greater than that of the existing gravity-type wind power foundation, it is understood that it can be a more advantageous construction method in terms of safety.
This paper describes the results for a numerical analysis of'single piles and pile oops in clayey soils subjected to monotonous lateral loading using the ABAQUS finite element software. The investigated variables in this study include free head and embedded capped single piles, pile diameter (1.0 m, 0.5 m), pile length (7.0 m, 10.0 m), and pile groups. The 1$\times$3 pile group was selected to investigate the individual pile and group lateral resistance, the distribution of the resistance among the piles, the effects of lateral stresses in front of and on the sides of the piles, and the effect of a cap on the lateral resistance of the leading pile. The soil was modeled using Cam-clay constitutive relationship and the pile was considered as a elastic circular concrete pile. The results show that the size of the cap influences lateral capacity of sin pile. The results also show in pile groups, the pile-soil-pile interaction and the cap effect the resistance in the leading pile, and the p-multiplier for the leading pile of greater than 1.0 was able to be obtained.
The magnitude of the lateral resistance that resists the lateral movement of the pile is controlled by the amount of the pile movement and the strength and stiffness of soil. In this paper, we proposed an equation which produces the lateral resistance of the laterally loaded single pile using the strain wedge model of the soil deformation. The results of this equation is compared with results of model test, field test, p-y curve and other methods. It is found that the result of proposed equation is smaller than the result of model test. The results of loading test considerably coincide with those of proposed equation; however, a few of deviations are generated as the displacement of pile head increases. Moreover, coincidences exist between the results of the proposed equation and those of finite difference method.
The magnitude of the lateral resistance that resists the lateral movement of the pile is controlled by the amount of the pile movement and the strength and stiffness of soil. In this paper, we proposed an equation which produces the ultimate lateral resistance of the laterally loaded single pile in sand using the strain wedge model of the soil deformation. The ultimate lateral resistance in strain wedge model is composed of earth pressure of wedge rear, the shear resistance on the side of the wedge, and the frictional resistance between pile and ground. The ultimate lateral resistance determined by the proposed equation was compared with the Ashour, F.D.M., field test in sand. As a result, the error of the proposed equation and Ashour theory, field test, F.D.M were respectively 1.03%, 0.40~3.32%, 6.02%.
In the case of harbor structures, it is important to understand the characteristics of structures that are subjected to repeated loads as they are structures that receive repetitive loads such as wave pressure as well as static loads. In this study, the lateral resistance according to the pile embeded depth of the block breakwater reinforced with piles by cyclic lateral loads was obtained through an model experiment. As the depth of embedment of the pile increased, the lateral resistance showed a tendency to increase. As the load was repeated, the gradient of the lateral resistance gradually appeared to be gentle. The bending moment of the rear pile was larger than that of the front pile. The bending moment of piles in the ground was similar to that when the pile head was free in the cohesionless of Broms (1964).

Three-dimensional FEM numerical analysis was performed to understand the behaviors of blocks and piles according to the horizontal load for the block breakwater combined with piles. The Modified Mohr-Coulomb model, the improved version of the Mohr-Coulomb model, was applied for the ground modeling. The cases when the pile is embedded only into the block, embedded to the riprap layer (H = 4.29 cm), and embedded to the ground down to 2H, 3H, and 4H were examined. The results of the laboratory model experiment and the numerical analysis showed similar horizontal resistance force-displacement behaviors. The pile showed rotational behavior up to the embedment depth of 1H~2H and bending behavior in the case of 3H~4H depth embedment. When the embedment depth of the pile is 3H or more, the pile shows a bending behavior, so it can be considered that the pile contributes significantly to the horizontal resistance of the block breakwater. The results of this study will be used for various numerical analyses for real-size structure design.
Pile foundation for transmission tower constructed in weak ground can cause the damage of the tower due to the different settlement between the foundations. In Japan and USA, connected-pile foundations whose 4 foundations are connected each other by beams were used for transmission tower (TEPCO 1988, IEEE 2001). Resistance increasing factors for connected-pile foundation signify increasing amount of resistance due to the effect of connected-pile material. In this study, we performed model lateral load tests of connected-pile foundations for transmission tower and found the resistance increasing factors for connected-pile foundation. The tests were performed in silty clay, and the resistance increasing factors were founded in various conditions that lateral load directions and height, the stiffness of beams in the connected-pile foundations were changed. The resistance increasing factors from our research were presented as a function of normal lateral loading height and normal stiffness of the connected-pile material. The resistances which were estimated from the resistance increasing factors were similar to measured values.
