  • We measured a solar irradiation of vertical and horizontal surface per azimuth in southern area of Korea using pyrheliometer. In comparison with the provided data from ASHRAE and CIBSE, the average amount of solar irradiation has much variation of 10 to 150% in reference with north direction. In the clear day, the measured value has much difference with the value of ASHRAE and there is similar trend in case of CIBSE. The reason why amount of irradiation of clear day is differ from the average value, is able to be assumed that the value of ASHRAE and CIRSE is made of assumption based on clear days. The result of analysis of ASHRAE and CIBSE values according to the amount irradiation value for vertical and horizontal surface per azimuth using the MBE, RSME, and t-Statistic show that the CIBSE value has more reliability for the MBE, RMSE, and t-Statistic values than ASHRAE value.

  • In this study, we analyzed the correlation between the amount of photovoltaic power generation and the factors of meteorological changes. A total of 52,561 data were used in the correlation analysis from January 2018 to January 2020, and the variables used in the correlation analysis were time, horizontal plane scattering solar radiation, direct solar radiation, wind velocity, and relative humidity. The temperature was used. Based on this data, we used the Google Colab platform to analyze the correlation, and the analysis revealed whether there was a correlation between solar power and meteorological change factors.

  • The major purpose of this paper is to develop an uncertainty estimate for the calibration of thermopile instruments used to measure solar radiation parameters. We briefly describe the solar radiation parameters most often measured, instrumentation, reference standards, and calibration techniques. The bulk of the paper describes elemental sources of error and their magnitude. We then apply a standard error analysis methodology to combine these elemental error estimates into a statement of total uncertainty for the instrument calibration factor. Our results allow one to evaluate the accuracy of a radiometric measurement using thermopile instrumentation in the light of the application, such as engineering test evaluation or for validation of theoretical models.

  • The main thrust of this paper is to investigate a practical way of generating the monthly averaged daily horizontal solar radiation in Korea. For estimating the horizontal solar radiation, the clearness index($K_T$) and the clearness number($C_N$) which are required for the use of Liu and Jordan's model and ASHRAE Clear Sky model were derived based on the measured weather data. Third-order polynomials returning $K_T$ and$C_N$ for a given location were derived as a function of cloud amount, month, date, latitude and longitude. The predicted monthly averaged daily horizontal solar radiation values were compared with those acquired from the established design weather data. The MBE(Mean Bias Error) and RMSE (Root Mean Squares for Error) between the predicted values and the measured data were near zero. It means that the suggested third-order polynomials for $K_T$ and $C_N$ have good applicability to Liu and Jordan's model and ASHRAE Clear Sky model.

  • This study examined the electric power quantity derived from solar radiation after installing a photovoltaic power generation system on the rooftop of building adjacent to a greenhouse with a view to reducing the operating expenses of the greenhouse by securing electric energy required to run it. Results of the study can be summed up as follows: The maximum, mean, and minimum solar radiation on the horizontal plane was $26.1MJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$, $14,0MJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$, and $0.6MJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$, respectively and individual the daily electric energy generated was about 6.1 kWh, 3.7 kWh, and 0.01 kWh. The cumulative total amounts of solar radiation and electric energy was about $4,378.2MJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$ and 1,163.2 kWh, respectively. Maximum, mean and minimum cumulative electric energy consumed through each load respectively was 4.5 kWh, 2.4 kWh, and 0.0 kWh and the cumulative electric energy were 739.2 kWh, which accounted for about 63.5% of generated power. In case of the mean amount of power consumption of the system used for this study, the small capacity of heater and the short operating hours meant there was enough power; while big capacity of heater led to a shortage, and if the array surface temperature increased relatively, the energy became proportionate to solar radiation and generated power does not increase. The correlation coefficient between the two factors was 0.851, which indicates a high correlation coefficient.

  • It is necessary to estimate enpirical constants in order to predict the monthly mean daily global radiation on a horizontal surface in the developing areas for alternative energy. Therefore many different equations have propoed to evaluate them for certain areas. In this work a new corrlation has been made to predict the solar radiation for any areas over Korea by cululating the regression models taking into account latitude, percentage of possible sunshine, and cloud cover. From the results, the single linear equation proposed by using percentage of possible sunshine method shows reliable results for estimating the global rdiation with average annual deviation of -4 to +2% from measured values.

  • Since the solar energy resource is the main input for sizing any solar photovoltaic system, it is essential to utilize the solar radiation data as an application and development of solar energy system increase. It will be necessary to understand and evaluate the insolation data. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has begun collecting horizontal global insolation data since May, 1982 at 16 different locations in Korea and for the more detailed analysis, images taken by geostationary satellite may be used to estimate solar irradiance fluxes at earth"s surface. It is based on the empirical correlation between a satellite derived cloud index and the irradiance at the ground. From the results, the measured data has been collected at 16 different stations and estimated using satellite at 23 different stations over the South Korea from 1982 to 2009. The Result of analysis shows that the annual-average daily global radiation on the horizontal surface is 3.56 kWh/ $m^2$/day and estimated solar radiation fluxes show reliable results for estimating the global radiation with average deviation of -7.27 to +3.65% from the measured values.

  • Spatial interpolation has become a common procedure in converting temperature forecasts and observations at irregular points for use in regional scale ecosystem modeling and the model based decision support systems for resource management. Neglection of terrain effects in most spatial interpolations for short term temperatures may cause erroneous results in mountainous regions, where the observation network hardly covers full features of the complicated terrain. A spatial interpolation model for daytime hourly temperature was formulated based on error analysis of unsampled site with respect to the site topography. The model has a solar irradiance correction scheme in addition to the common backbone of the lapse rate - corrected inverse distance weighting. The solar irradiance scheme calculates the direct, diffuse and reflected components of shortwave radiation over any surfaces based on the sun-slope geometry and compares the sum with that over a reference surface. The deviation from the reference radiation is used to calculate the temperature correction term by an empirical conversion formula between the solar energy and the air temperature on any sloped surfaces at an hourly time scale, which can be prepared seasonally for each land cover type. When this model was applied to a 14 km by 22 km mountainous region at a 10 m horizontal resolution, the estimated hourly temperature surfaces showed a better agreement with the observed distribution than those by a conventional method.

  • The amount of incident solar rays on inclined surfaces with various directions has been widely utilized as important data in installing solar collector, hot water system, and designing solar buildings and house. This is because the performance of the solar energy applied systems is much affected by angle and direction of incident rays. Recognizing those factors mentioned above are of importance, actual experiment has been performed in this research to obtain the angle of inclination with which the maximum incident rays can be absorbed. The results obtained in this research could be used in designing optimal solar thermal systems.

  • Since the solar radiation is main input for sizing any solar photovoltaic system and solar thermal power system, it will be necessary to understand and evaluate the insolation data. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has begun collecting horizontal global insolation data since May, 1982 and direct normal insolation data since December 1992 at 16 different locations. Because of a poor reliability of existing data, KIER's new data will be extensively used by solar energy system users as well as by research institutes. Among some significant results, the yearly averaged horizontal global insolation was turned out 3.60 kWh/$m^2$/day and the yearly mean 2.62 kWh/$m^2$/day of the direct normal insolation was evaluated for all days.
