  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of precast segmental PSC bridge columns. For the analysis of reinforced concrete structures, a computer program named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology) is used. To represent the interaction between tendon and concrete of a prestressed concrete member, a bonded or unbonded tendon element based on the finite element method is used. A joint element is modified to predict the inelastic behaviors of segmental joints. The solution of the equations of motion is obtained by numerical integration using Hilber-Hughes-Taylor (HHT) algorithm. The proposed numerical method gives a realistic prediction of seismic behavior throughout the input ground motions for numerical examples.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to determine the dynamic optimal shapes of simple beam-columns with the constant volume. The parabolic function is chosen as the variable equation for the depth of regular polygon cross-section. The ordinary differential equation including the effect of axial load is applied to calculate the natural frequencies. The Runge-Kutta and Regula-Falsi methods are used to integrate the differential equation and compute the frequencies, respectively. Then the dynamic optimal shape whose lowest natural frequency is highest is determined by reading the critical value of the frequency versus section ratio curve plotted by the frequency data. In the numerical examples, the simple beam-columns are analysed and the numerical results of this study are shown in tables and figures.

  • Wheelset dynamic analysis is a key element to determine the degree of accuracy of railway vehicle dynamics. In this study, a three-dimensional wheelset dynamic analysis is presented in such a way that the precise wheel-rail contact analysis in three-dimension is implemented into the dynamic equations of a wheelset. A numerical procedure that can be used for the analysis of a wheelset dynamics when the wheel-rail two point contact occurs in a cornering maneuver is developed. Numerical solutions of the constraint equations and the dynamics equations of a wheelset are achieved by using Runge-Kutta method. The proposed wheelset dynamic analysis is validated by comparison against results obtained from VI-RAIL analysis.

  • This paper presents an analysis of the wave propagation in cross-type tunnels using the finite volume time domain (FVTD) method. Because the FVTD method is based on the volume intergrations of themaxwell's equations with respected to arbitrary shaped small polyhedron cells and the fields at every center point of the cells ar eassigned in a average fashion, the method can handle arbitrary boundary problems with inhomogeneous media. In this paper, the wave propagation in cross-type tunnels has been analyzed using the fVTD method with the PML (perfectly matched layer) absorbing bundary conditons, and the numerical results are verified with a set of experimental data.

  • When applying the MLFMM algorithm to a large scattering problem, the accuracy of the calculation of the transfer function has a crucial effect on the final simulation results. The numerical accuracy for the double integral on the unit sphere is strongly dependent on the sampling number. With an increasing the sampling points, the overall required memory and running time of the MLFMM simulation also increases. Hence, an optimal over-sampling rate for the number of the sampling points is numerically obtained, which is verified for a real large scattering problem.

  • This paper presents a p-version finite element approach for modeling the stress distribution around a circular hole in a finite strip subjected to membrane and flexural behaviors. Also, same problem with a crack emanating from a perforated tension strip was solved by virtual crack extension method. The p-version of the finite element method based on integrals of Legendre polynomials is shown to perform very well for modeling geometries with very steep stress gradients in the vicinity of a circular cutout. Here, the transfinite mapping technique for circular boundaries was used to avoid the discretization errors. The numerical results from the proposed scheme have a good comparison with those by Nisida, Howland, Newman etc. and the conventional finite element approach.

  • A numerical simulation of an incompressible cavity flow is conducted. Two dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are integrated using staggered grid and a finite volume method with C-QUICK scheme for spatial derivatives and fully implicit scheme for the time derivatives. SIMPLE-C algorithm is employed to solve the pressure field. Computational results show that the third eddy is generated in the shear layer mode but not in the steady mode. This signifies that the third eddy plays an important role in cavity flow stability. As a means to control the flow, jet blowing is applied to a position below the cavity upstream edge. Effects of flow control parameters on the stability such as the frequency, the phase, and the velocity magnitude are reported.

  • In order to obtain the wave-making resistance of a ship, so-called the Neumann-Kelvin problem is solved numerically. For computing the Havelock source, which is the Green's function of the problem, we adopted the methods given by Newman(1987) for the term representing the local disturbance, and Baar and Price(1988) for the wave disturbance, respectively. In the numerical code we developed, the source strength is assumed as bilinear on each panel and continuous throughout the hull surface. The wave-making resistance is calculated using the algorithm of de Sendagorta and erases(1988), which makes use of the wave amplitude far downstream. The Wigley hull was chosen for the sample calculation, and our results showed a good agreement with other existing experimental and numerical results.

  • To evaluate the usage of $\kappa-\imath$ turbulence closure for the analysis of thermal discharge behavior, a two-dimensional depth-integrated numerical model is developed. The developed model is applied to a steady flow in an open channel with simle geometry and the numerical results agree well with existing experimental data. The adequate simulation of recirculation, reattachment, and excess temperature rise at downstream of the outlet in the channel attributes to the correct calculation of turbulent eddy viscosity and diffusivity by $\kappa-\imath$ turbulence model. For an accurate prediction of thermal discharge behavior, the introduction of buoyancy production term, the modification of source/sink, and the correct input of turbulence constants of the $\kappa-\imath$ turbulence model are required.
