  • This paper aims at the investigation of various seepage behavior when rainfall infiltarates into unsaturated ground and understanding of the mechanism for slope instability due to rainfall. For this purpose an experimental study is carried out for model slopes using the test equipment which can simulate various rainfall intensity. In addition, a numerical study is performed for the same dimension and boundary condition as the experimental model. From both the experimental test and numerical analysis the progress of wetting front with time, critical amounts of rainfall, and pore-water pressure development with time are know in detail and their effects on slope stability are described.

  • In this paper, the validity of the numerical model of fishes' behavior presented in our earlier paper was examined by the whiteness test on the residual of numerical model and by the comparison between experiment and simulation on several indexes represented by fishes' swimming characteristics. The validity of the numerical model was proved statistically by means of the whiteness test of the residual. The similarity was confirmed by comparison between experiment and simulation for the swimming trajectory of fishes, the mean distance of individual from wall, the mean swimming speed and the mean distance between the nearest individuals. These results suggest that the behavior of fishes according to the flow speed in three-dimensional space can be estimated partially by the numerical model presented in our earlier paper. However, a long-term approach to improve the modeling technique on the behavior of fishes may be needed before applying the numerical model presented in our earlier paper to real fishing ground.

이러한 수치해석 방법에는 DNS(Direct Numerical Simulation), LES(Large Eddy Simulation), RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes) 등이 있으며, 그중 LES는 난류 모델링을 사용하는 RANS 방법에 비해 더욱 정확한 흐름 모델링을 제공하는 장점이 있다.

  • This paper is to study the development of three dimensional Digital Surface Model (DSM) using photogrammetry technique based on self-developed Drone (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)). To develop DSM, we selected a study area in Jeju island and took 24 pictures from the drone. The three dimensional coordinates of the photos were made by Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) surveying with 10 ground control points (GCP). From the calculated three dimensional coordinates, we produced orthographic image and DSM. The accuracy of DSM was calculated using three GCPs. The average accuracy of X and Y was from 8.8 to 14.7 cm, and the accuracy of Z was 0.8 to 12.4 cm. The accuracy was less than the reference accuracy of 1/1,000 digital map provided by National Geographic Information Institute (NGII). From the results, we found that the self-developed drone and the photogrammetry technique are a useful tool to make DSM and digital map of Jeju.

  • The wind is very important factor in forest fire spread. Flame spread has a change through wind pattern change in forest fire. In order to analyze the forest fire flame spread rate, change of flame tilt depending on wind may be considering first. This is be cause the flame spread rate varies by the flame tilt changed due to transfer of heat. Especially, as wind speed grow, flame gets closer to surface, heat transfer ratio increase, virgin fuel bed reaches ignition temperature more rapidly, and flame moves faster. This study deduces, through experiment and physical figure analysis, relations on the change behavior of flame tilt due to wind. The value of flame tilt angle calculated from the equation and the experiment value showed average error angle of $3.3^{\circ}$, which is relatively smaller than results of previous studies that used other coefficient. Froude number coefficient A can be calculated in the method provided in this research for estimation of flame tilt angle of virgin fuel bed with varying thermal properties. The research finding is expected to be applied to future studies on flame spread through numerical analysis of heat transfer.

  • Although the evaluation of the mechanical properties and behavior of jointed rock masses is very important for the design of tunnel and underground openings, it has always been considered the most difficult problem. One of the difficulties in describing the rock mass behavior is the selection of the appropriate constitutive model. This limitation may be overcome with the progress in discrete element software such as PFC, which does not need the user to prescribe a constitutive model for rock mass. In this paper, a 30\;m\;\times\;30\;m\;\times\;30\;m m jointed rock mass of road tunnel site was analyzed. h discrete fracture network was developed from the joint geometry obtained from core logging and surface survey. Using the discontinuities geometry from the DFN model, PFC simulations were carried out, starting with the intact rock and systematically adding the joints and the stress-strain response was recorded for each case. With the stress-strain response curves, the mechanical properties of jointed rock masses were determined. As expected, the presence of joints had a pronounced effect on mechanical properties of the rock mass. More importantly, getting the mechanical response of the PFC model doesn't require a user specified constitutive model.

  • The importance of subsurface information is becoming crucial in urban area due to increase of underground construction. The position of underground facilities should be identified precisely before excavation work. Geophyiscal exporation method such as ground penetration radar (GPR) can be useful to investigate the subsurface facilities. GPR transmits electromagnetic waves to the ground and analyzes the reflected signals to determine the location and depth of subsurface facilities. Unfortunately, the readability of GPR signal is not favorable. To overcome this deficiency and automate the GPR signal processing, deep learning technique has been introduced recently. The accuracy of deep learning model can be improved with abundant training data. The ground is inherently heteorogeneous and the spacially variable ground properties can affact on the GPR signal. However, the effect of ground heterogeneity on the GPR signal has yet to be fully investigated. In this study, ground heterogeneity is simulated based on the fractal theory and GPR simulation is carried out by using gprMax. It is found that as the fractal dimension increases exceed 2.0, the error of fitting parameter reduces significantly. And the range of water content should be less than 0.14 to secure the validity of analysis.

  • A new alternative method based on HWAW method to detect underground anomaly was introduced. The location of underground anomaly can be estimated by using 2-dimensional image of phase velocity image with position and wavelength based on distortion phenomena of surface wave due to underground anomaly. Overall procedure of proposed method such as field testing, signal processing and interpretation of the result was introduced. Numerical verification study was performed by using various ground models containing underground anomaly. According to the condition of anomaly, the propagation and reflection characteristics of surface wave were different and this could be more easily shown in the image of phase velocity. Some rules of distortion phenomena were found and these become clues for estimating underground anomaly in interpreting real field data. Field verification tests were performed with conventional geophysical methods such as DC resistivity method and GPR. Though field condition is not homogeneous like numerical models, similar distortion phenomena were found in the testing results and estimated location of underground anomaly was agreed well with the results of another geophysical methods.

  • The groundwater flow and contaminant transport numerical models have been established for analyzing the movements of pollutants in subsurface soil at Daeduk site. The groundwater flow and concentration of U-234 using the numerical models were simulated around Daeduk nuclear facilities. The computed groundwater flow was mainly advected toward the direction of east and southeast around HANARO in the site. The radioactive material entered into the subsurface soil was transported along the same direction with groundwater flow. The radioactive material deposited on the surface from the calculated concentration distributions was not affected by surrounding environment of the site.

  • This study applies 3-D N-S solver based on PBM (Porous Body Model), LED-WASS-3D ver 2.0 to directly analyze non-linear interaction of seawater-freshwater-coastal aquifer in order to simulate the seawater infiltration into coastal aquifer. This numerical simulation is the first trial in Korea, as well as unusual and new numerical analysis abroad. Firstly, to validate the applied numerical model, the validity and effectiveness was verified for the numerical model by comparing and considering it with the result of laboratory experiment for seawater-freshwater interface in coastal aquifer. And then it simulated the seawater infiltration into coastal aquifer considering the changed levels of seawater and groundwater in order to analyze the distribution characteristics of flow field and seawater-freshwater interface of coastal aquifer as the level difference between seawater and groundwater and rate of seawater level (${\Delta}h/h$) increased. In addition, the characteristics of seawater infiltration were analyzed from the vertical salinity in the coastal aquifer by ${\Delta}h/h$, which cannot be obtained from existing non-diffusion numerical models. Finally, it analyzed the effect of ${\Delta}h/h$ on the seawater infiltration distance in coastal aquifer, which was indexed.
