  • Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) leaf is known to be effective for 'overcoming body heat' and stopping bleeding. It is commonly used as a traditional curing plant for the treatment of hematemesis, epistaxis, hemoptysis, hematuria, and metrorrhagia in traditional Chinese medicine. This study investigated on the effect of oral administration of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) leaf extract on the serum and liver lipid levels of rats fed a high fat diet. Experimental rats were divided into five different experimental groups, including the general diet group (Cont), high fat diet with lotus leaf extract groups (HL40, HL80, HL120), and high fat diet group (HFG). Body weight significantly decreased in the HL120 sample compared to that of Cont. The weights of the livers and kidneys of rats corresponded to the increase in body weight. Total cholesterol and triglyceride contents in liver tissues of rats were lowest in the sample HL120 sample. The levels of total lipids, total cholesterol, and triglycerides in serum were lower in the HL120 sample compared to the HFG.

  • This study investigated the causes of large-scale ground subsidence in the upper part of mining cavities of the Samdo limestone mine, Samcheok city, Gangwondo, Korea. Geological and electrical resistivity surveys were undertaken on the collapsed slope of the mountain and in the mine tunnel where subsidence occurred, with geotechnical evaluations and numerical analysis. It is concluded that wide mining cavities, with irregular pillars in unstable rock masses hosting discontinuities, weathered over time, resulting in subsidence occurring along a fault plane due to increasing ground stress.

  • The effects of hot water soluble polysaccharides extract(PS) of Lentinus edodes on the lipid components in the liver and plasma of the rats fed the butter yellow were investigated. Twenty four rats were divided into four groups and fed with the diet containing 15% casein, 30% sucrose and 10% soybean oil (basal diet; NO group), supplemented with butter yellow (BO group) or/and PS (NP, BP group). The contents of triglyceride and phospholipid in liver were significantly lower in BP group than BO group but the content of total lipid and total cholesterol were not significant difference between BO and BP. The concentrations of total cholesterol and triglyceride of plasma were significantly lower in BP than BO. AS the results PS of Lentinus edodes prevent the triglyceride and cholesterol rise and then improve the lipid metabolism of rats fed the butter yeollow.

  • In this study, a stochastic finite element method is proposed with a view to consider rock property variations in the analysis of structural behavior on underground caverns. Here, the Monte carlo simulation technique, which has been widely used in probabilistic applications in many engineering fields, is applied for the analysis of the effect rock property distribution. Using the newly developed computer program based on the above - mentioned method, the underground opening in biaxial stress field is analyzed considering the effect of material property variation.

  • In this study, the subsidence behavior caused by groundwater ex-flow in a limestone cavity encountered during tunnel excavation was quantified based on numerical analysis and the effect was analyzed. Based on the groundwater level and surface subsidence surveyed at the site, a numerical analysis technique was applied to analyze the characteristics of the subsidence behavior according to the tunnel passage of the geological vulnerabilities. The results of groundwater seepage-coupled analysis were analyzed to reflect the actual ground subsidence behavior. As a result of the study, it was analyzed that the ground subsidence due to the tunnel excavation in the limestone common section(the geological vulnerable zone) was analyzed that the dramatical decrease in groundwater level was the main cause. As a result of numerical analysis, it was analyzed that the long-term cumulative settlement of the asphalt surface after the groundwater ex-flow was 76~118mm due to the reduction of the volume of the soil layer due to the decrease in the groundwater level, and the settlement amount increased as the depth of the soil layer increased.
