In order to predict nutrient circulation in Hakata bay, we have developed an ecosystem model named the Sediment-Water Ecological Model (SWEM). The model, consisting of two sub-models with hydrodynamic and biological models, simulates the circulation process of nutrient between water column and sediment, such as nutrient regeneration from sediments as well as ecological structures on the growth of phytoplankton and zooplankton. This model was applied to prevent eutrophication in Hakata bay, located in western Japan. The calculated results of the tidal currents by the hydrodynamic model showed good agreement with the observed currents. Moreover, SWEM simulated reasonably well the seasonal variations of water quality, and reproduced spatial heterogeneity of water quality in the bay, observed in the field. According to the simulation of phosphorus circulation at the head of the bay, it was predicted that the regeneration process of phosphorus across the sediment-water interface had a strong influence on the water quality of the bay.
A total of 190 phytoplankton taxa was identified in southern waters of the East Sea of Korea in May 1988, July 1989 and November 1991. Leptocylindrus danicus, Nitzschia pungens and Bacteriastrum delicatulum were the dominant species in spring. In summer, Skeletonema costatum was dominant all around the study area but Chaetoceros socialis and Rhizosolenia alata f. gracillima were locally dominant. On the other hand, the dominant species in autumn shifted to Chaeotoceros socialis, Nitzschia delicatissima, Nitzschia sp. and Gymnodinium sp. The average species diversities of the phytoplankton community were low in spring, summer and autumn, being 1.24, 1.69 and 2.12 respectively. The result of cluster analysis in summer suggested that the surface water of this study area could be divided into three phytohydrographic regions which consisted of the oceanic water region affected by Tsushima current, the east Korean neritic water region and the proper water region adjacent to Ulleung island. Compared with the surface phytohydrographic regions, one more region might be recognized at the 40m depth waters. It was appeared in the middle of study area and seemed to be affected by both Tsushima current and water mass of 10$^{\circ}C$ located deeper than 50m.
Zooplankton samples of upper 50m layer in May, 1985 and of various depth intervals depending on thermal structure in October, 1985 were analyzed. Standing stock represents mean of 538inds/㎥ in spring and 267 inds/㎥ and 508inds/㎥ of whole column mean and surface layer in fall, respectively. A total of 55 and 104taxa is identified in each season and accumulated data list at least 123 species inhabiting in the study area. Copepods dominate in the zooplankton community, followed by protozoans and appendicularians in both seasons. In surface layer, distribution of subtropical species and standing stock seems to illuminate the effects of the Tsushima Current and the North Korean Cold Watermass in cold season, whereas only standing stock shows discernable variation in warm season. Concerning whole water column, depth of permanent thermocline bottom, at about 120m in fall 1985, plays significant role as a barrier to the distribution of mesopelagic cold water species. Serial sampling in October, 1985 does not reveal any perceivable diel vertical migration, which is considered to confirm the earlier suggest that owing to the lack of true abyssal species zooplankton biomass of deeper gayer is very poor, so that diel vertical migration of the East Sea is weak.

Leaky aquifer (two-aquifer) system in this study consist of an upper unconfined and a lower confined aquifer with a leaky layer between them. It is assumed that water is withdrawn from the confined aquifer of the aquifer system, the upper unconfined aquifer will be affected by the leaky aquifer separating the upper and lower aquifer. In order to analyze the leaky aquifer, the determination of hydraulic parameters is needed. In this paper, hydraulic parameters are suggested by improved SM (slope-matching) method. To know variation of groundwater head in leaky aquifer systems, an numerical scheme is made using the finite difference method. To verify the numerical scheme, its solution is compared to analytical one. The solution of them agrees well in one-dimensional system at steady-state condition. And heads of groundwader are computed upper and lower aquifer in two-dimensional system.
Using the TBP slovent extraction method, a simple and precise method for determining uranium isotopes in the environment samples was developed. The soil sample was decomposed with $HNO_3$ and HF. Uranium isotopes were extracted with 15% TBP in $CCl_4$ from aqueous phase to organic phase, and Th fraction was removed with 8M HCl. Uranium fraction was purified in back extraction step with 1M HCl. Optimized electrode position conditions of uranium Isotopes were set using a new electrode position solution including a DTPA chelating agent. The new method of uranium isotopes determination was validated with a result of application to IAEA Reference Soils.
The present study aims to investigate the potential applications of Aristotelia chilensis (A. chilensis) extracts as novel cosmetic materials. The total extracts of A. chilensis were partitioned into chloroform (CHCl3), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), and distilled water (DW) fractions. A. chilensis extracts exhibited no cytotoxicity toward HaCaT human keratinocyte and B16F10 mouse melanoma cell lines. CHCl3, EtOAc, and DW extracts reduced oxidative stress, and EtOAc extract was superior to glutathione, a natural human antioxidant positive control. The extracts of A. chilensis reduced melanin synthesis in cells treated with α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. The extracts of A. chilensis exhibited antibacterial effects toward Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). In particular, the EtOAc extract was effective in terms of antibacterial activity against S. aureus. In the present study, we identified several potential applications of A. chilensis extracts in terms of novel antioxidant and whitening cosmetic materials as well as antibacterial preservatives.

We observed tidal currents throughout all four seasons in 2007 at a single station, located 1.6km off Haeundae Beach and compared these current data with wind data. The direction of seasonal wind represented a similarity between the winds at sea and on land but the speed of wind at sea was almost three times stronger than the wind on land. In addition, the wind at sea turned out to considerably affect on tidal currents, particularly from late summer to autumn. On the other hand, the thickness of Ekman Layer, indicating a limitation of wind influence, was estimated to be 31.8 m on average, suggesting that the entire water column is under the influence of wind. Therefore, we are required to consider the wind stress into the analysis of tidal currents for the prevention of the loss of sand from Haeundae Beach.
During CHAOS (2003, 2006) and SSGH projects (2007), acoustic investigation including hydroacoustic (HA), side-scan sonar (SSS) and highresolution sparker seismic (HSS) surveys was carried out on the northeastern Sakhalin slope ($53^{\circ}56'\;N$, $143^{\circ}52'\;E$ to $54^{\circ}40'\;N$, $144^{\circ}32'\;E$). More than 130 methane seeps with high backscatter intensity are identified on SSS mosaic, which are well accompanied with gas flares in the water column on HA profiles and subbottom gas chimneys on HSS profiles. It is likely that that some seeps align along a NW strike parallel to the Lavrentiev Fault.
