Smartphone Based Retouching Method for Watercolor Painting Effect Using Mean Shift Segmentation (Mean Shift Segmentation을 이용한 스마트폰 기반의 수채화 효과 변환 기법)

  • We propose a retouching method that converts a photography taken by smartphone to a watercolor painting image using bilateral filtering and mean shift segmentation which are mostly used in image processing. The first step is to convert an input image to fit the screen resolution of smartphone. And next step is to weaken high frequency components of the image, while preserving the edge of image using the bilateral filtering. And after that we perform mean shift segmentation from the bilateral filtered image. We apply parameters of mean shift segmentation considering the processing speed of smartphone. Experimental result shows that our method can be applied to various types of image and bring better result.

  • We propose a retouching method that converts a general photography to a watercolor painting image using bilateral filtering and mean shift segmentation which are mostly used in image processing. The first step is to weaken high frequency components of the image, while preserving the edge of image using the bilateral filtering. And after that we perform DoG(Difference of Gradient) edge extraction and mean shift segmentation respectively from the bilateral filtered image. The DoG edge extraction is performed using luminance component of the image whose RGB color space is transformed into CIELAB space. Experimental result shows that our method can be applied to various types of image and bring better result, especially against the photo taken in daylight.

  • There was much previous work to represent effects which are used in the real world paintings. In case of Western paintings like as watercolor or oil painting, largely conversion techniques from photo images were researched. However, in case of Oriental paintings, the development of a conversion technique is not easy because a few strokes are used to represent objects. Then, model-based approach was studied to draw Oriental paintings. In this paper, a model-based approach for Oriental paintings is described. In our model, to represent the diffusion effects, LEM(Local Equilibrium Model) is proposed. LEM is a method to calculate the movement of water and ink effectively. Also, a layer model for paper is proposed to discriminate wet or dry state. And a brush model to draw strokes is described.

  • Recent exhibition's paradigm is changing from the existing unidirectional oriented exhibition form to a form of interactive hands-on exhibits that viewers can get and realistically feel a variety of information. Hands-on exhibit embodies the human interface by utilizing light, sound, pressure, etc. in time and space. In this paper, we have studied the creation of fractal image by the Mandelbrot technique and proposed the interaction method for it to be converted into a variety of forms. By using the proposed method, a variety of image transformation such as printmaking effect, sketch effect, Pop Art effect can be performed, according to clicking a certain fraction on the created fractal image screen by a user mouse. Interactive image generated in this study are expected to be used for trade shows, promotional products, media art design.

  • 본 논문에서는 3D 게임이나 가상현실, 인터렉티브 아트 등의 실시간 환경의 컨텐츠 제작에 활용가능한 수묵담채화풍의 렌더링 기법을 제안한다. 제안된 기법은 기존의 3차원 수묵화 렌더링 연구에서는 다루지 않았던, 색채표현법과 그 합성법을 중심으로 연구되었다. 색채표현법의 경우, 일반적으로 삼색을 단계적으로 겹쳐서 표현하는 수묵담채화의 특성에 따라, 실제 그림을 그릴 때에 적용되는 삼색의 혼합방법과 순서가 자동으로 적용될 수 있는 삼색기반 구조를 통해 농담과 질감효과를 표현했으며, 또한 이러한 삼색레이어의 합성을 위해서는 안료의 광학적 성질을 반영하여 실제 회화매체에 가까운 색상을 재현할 수 있는 Kubelka-Munk(KM)모델을 적용한다. 기존의 KM모델은 비사실적 렌더링 연구 분야에서 수채화, 유화 등 서양화를 대상으로 한 색채 합성에 적용되어 왔기 때문에 기존의 연구에서 제시한 방법만으로는 삼색레이어가 겹쳐질 때 나타나는 수묵담채화의 특징과 천연 재료를 사용하는 동양 안료의 색상을 정확히 반영할 수 없었다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 실제 수묵담채화에 이용되는 전통안료의 색상 분석을 통해 KM모델에 적용할 파라미터들을 추출하고, 앞에서 설계한 삼색 기반 구조에 따라 색상을 합성하는 방법을 제시한다.

A Simple and Fast Algorithm for Real-time Pencil Strokes (간단하고 빠른 실시간 연필 스트로크 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we present a new algorithm which imitate real pencil strokes. The purpose of research on NPR(Non-Photorealistic Rendering) is simulating automatically manmade artistic expressions such as pen-and-ink illustrations, watercolor paintings, pencil sketches and pastel drawings with computers. Recently, there has been a great deal of research works on NPR. One of them is researching in pencil illustration methods for NPR, and a lot of researchers have investigated into the LIC(Linear Integral Convolution) techniques which would change the initial images into the output images by directional vector field images for generating effects of pencil. However, the LIC techniques can not be applied to real-time drawing tools because they are post processing techniques. This paper presents a real-time pencil strokes algorithm which is based on an observation of how pencils(from 6B to 6H) draw lines. Although this algorithm using some pencil variables and noise generation is simple, it is fast and also can draw real-time pencil strokes similar to real manmade pencil strokes in a GUI drawing tool.
