We have carried out Pearson-type chi-square tests on the orientation data of joints from different depths in order to estimate the homogeneity of joint orientations obtained from a borehole. The orientation data of joints were collected from two non-foliated massive rocks of granitic gneisses in South Korea since orientations of joints in folded metamorphic rocks, for example, are controlled by foliation and also changes as the orientations of foliation change by folding. Borehole images were used for the analysis of the orientations of individual joints. The orientation data were subdivided into the upper level data and lower level data. The data from these two levels are plotted on the patch net consisting of 21 orientation patches. Then, the two patterns on the patch net were analyzed using a contingency table. From the chi-square test on the data collected from two sites, we found that some data sets show statistically meaningful differences in orientations of joints. Since joints are one of the important parameters in determining the physical properties of rock masses, in situ investigation of joints are desirable in the geotechnical investigation and also in design of subsurface structures (e.g. tunnels and underground storages).

This paper presents the influence of the underground structure (such as cavern and tunnels) behavior according to the rock joint orientation and underground cavern size. In order to perform this research, numerical and experimental studies are carried out. Stress aspect was assessed by quantitative according two kind of factor. In the experimental study, the laboratory model tests are performed in the several ground conditions with different underground cavern size. The results obtained from the model tests are also verified and evaluated using the numerical analysis. Due to the underground cavern, it is found from this study that the stresses developed in archcrown, side wall of underground are increased with increasing the underground cavern size. It is also investigated that the rock joint direction is one of main influence factor as risk factor, to maintain the underground cavern stability. It may be expected that this research will provide the very useful information to evaluate the underground cavern stability.
In order to quantify the anisotropic properties of rock included joints and shear behavior in joint surface, the mold is Produced for rock joint surface using gypsum Plaster and Peformed for replicated joint models made of cement mortar. Rock sample is measured using mechanical profilometer before testing and their result is expressed quantitatively. The statistical parameters and the fractal dimension by fractal theory for roughness is investigated its coordinate value for numerical process. The shear strength to the shear displacement in low level normal stress ismaintained or increased in most joint models. Their results present that this relationship is depended several roughness properties in joint model for natural rock joint. The relationship between the shear strength and the Properties for profiles estimated by some statistical parameter in roughness has the low correlation and is not constant. The result between the data for direct shear test and using Barton's equation, Barton's equation has not the effectiveness for the effect of anisotropy and has not suitable to recognizing the properties for joint surface. It means that JRC has not the properties of anisotropic rock surface. The fractal dimension is well correlated with the data of direct shear test than those of JRC. New experimental formulae using fractal dimension is comported with the anisotropic properties for direct shear test.

Trachytic cliff showing a unique appearance like noodle is located in the Mt. Bipa, Seo-myeon, Ulleung island. This cliff is named 'Guksubawi'(means noodle-like rock) by its appearance. There is cliffs on three sides except north side and each side shows semi-vertical columnar joints obviously. This columnar joint has different character in appearance and mineralogy according to their direction and this tendency is remarkable in contrast between the east side and the west side. The consideration of the cooling processes after eruption of trachytic lava based on the contrast of both columnar joints dealt in the full text. In the morphological approach, the columnar joint on the east side has narrower space and chisel-like marks than the west side. And the joint walls are sharper on the east side than west side too. In the mineralogical approach, then, trachyte on the west side has bigger phenocrysts than the east side and is showing glomeroporphyritic texture and weak trachytic textures of lath of plagioclase. Around these differences between the east side and the west side, it modelled the typical temperature gradient while the cooling processes of hot rocks and the east side, consequently, corresponds to exterior of the entire trachytic volume. The columnar joint of the Guksubawi has the value of landscape and scientific importance about the forming processes of the columnar joint of trachytic lava, and so supposed it has enough values to preserved as natural heritage.
Types of slope failure related to cut slope stability are interpreted through case analyses, and also factors affecting structurally controlled instability investigated, which are developed by geologic structures along a national road No. 25 across the Cheongwon and Boeun-Guns, Chungbuk. Engineering properties such as orientation, persistence, roughness and uniaxial compressive strength of joints are analyzed by square-inventory method in three areas with well-preserved outcrops. The study area is located in Ogcheon folded bet, and are composed of quartz-schist and quartzite in the Midongsan Formation and phyllite in the Ungyori Formation. Flexural beds by folding, schistosity and cleavage besides joints are developed due to slight metamorphism. Various types of joints developed by folding are formed such as strike-parallel, strike-perpendicular, wedge and wrench joint sets by both initially regional and later superposed folding. Factors of slope instability are created by crossing the orientations of joint, cleavage, bedding and slope one another. In the case that the orientation of a slope is coincident with one of beds, factors causing large-scale failure including plane failure are increased greatly. Also in the region that orientations of the slope and bed are crossed each other at high angle, only local and minor failures are shown in the slope.
Cyclic shear test system, which is capable of measuring flow rate inside rock joint, was established to investigate the hydraulic behavior of rough rock joints under various loading conditions. Laboratory hydraulic tests during compression and shear were conducted for artificial rough rock joints. Prior to tests, aperture characteristics of specimens were examined by measuring surface topography. Permeability changes under compression were well approximated with several hydraulic model. Hydraulic behavior conformed to dilation characteristics in the first stage, and permeability increased with increase of dilation. As the shear displacement progressed, flow rate became somewhat constant due to gouge production and offset of apertures. Hydraulic behavior under cyclic shear loading was also influenced by the degradation of asperities and gouge production. In addition. the relation between hydraulic aperture and mechanical aperture under compression and shear loading was investigated and compared.
In this study, scaled model tests were performed to investigate the deformation behaviors around tunnels located in anisotropic rocks. Fifteen types of test models which had respectively different joint angles and rock pressure conditions were made, where the modelling materials were the mixture of sand, plaster and water. All of the tested models showed the shear failure mechanism at the stress-concentrated regions and sliding phenomena according to the joint planes. The direction of joint inclination turned out to have great effect on the tunnel deformation behaviors. The models of joint inclination less than $30^{\circ}$ showed considerable floor heavings. The model of $50^{\circ}$ joint inclination showed the least tunnel convergence among the tested models regardless of rock pressure condition, so that it was thought as the most stable model. Furthermore, the failure mechanisms and deformation behaviors of tunnel models were strongly dependent on the coefficient of rock pressure.
In this study, a newly modified 3-dimensional strain-dependent hydraulic conductivity modification relation which incorporates the influences of normal deformation and shear dilation is suggested. Since rock mass is simulated as a orthogonally jointed medium, an anisotropic hydraulic conductivity field can be evaluated using that relation. The empirical relationship on the basis of GSI and disturbance factor has been used to estimate the value of a modulus reduction ratio (ratio of rock mass deformation modulus to rock matrix elastic modulus). Principal hydraulic conductivity directions is not generally coincident with the global coordinate due to the inclining of joint and the influence of joint inclination is evaluated under strain rotation. Result shows that change of hydraulic conductivity does decreases with the increase of GSI and disturbance factor has much effects on the hydraulic conductivity of rock mass getting GSI value above 50. It is found that the inclination of joint impacts on the variation of hydraulic conductivity.
We have studied orientational characteristics of microcracks in Mesozoic granites and granitic dyke rocks from Seokmo-do, Ganghwa-gun. Microcracks on horizontal surfaces of rock samples from 14 sites were investigated by image processing. Orientations of these microcracks compared with those of 18 sets of joints in Mesozoic granites from Seokmo-do. From the related chart, microcrack sets show strong preferred orientations which obviously are coincident with the direction of vertical common joints. It follows that the formation of macroscopic joints may be the results of further growth and step-wise jointing of pre-existing microcracks. Orientations of microcracks from this result also compared with those of vertical rift and grain planes for Jurassic and Cretaceous granite quarries in Korea. As shown in the distribution chart, the congruence of distribution pattern among microcracks and rift and grain planes suggests that similar microcrack systems probably occur regionally in Jurassic and Cretaceous granites from Korea. In particular, whole domain of the distribution chart was divided into 16 groups in terms of the phases of distribution of microcracks and planes. These microcrack sets in each domains construct complex composite microcrack systems which have formed progressively by different geologic processes and under varying conditions.
