  • Detection and classification of undersea mines in shallow waters using active sonar returns is a difficult task due to complexity of underwater environment. Support vector machine(SVM) is a binary classifier that is well known to provide a global optimum solution. In this paper, classification experiments of sonar returns from mine-like objects and non-mine-like objects are carried out using the SVM, and classification performance is analyzed and presented with discussions depending on parameter values of SVM kernel functions.

  • Underwater active target detection is vital for defense systems, requiring accurate detection and estimation of distance and velocity. Sequential transmission is necessary at each beam angle, but divided pulse length leads to range ambiguity. Multi-frequency transmission results in time-bandwidth product losses when bandwidth is divided. To overcome these problem, we propose a novel method using Generalized Sinusoidal Frequency Modulation (GSFM) for rapid target detection, enabling low-correlation pulses between subpulses without bandwidth division. The proposed method allows for rapid updates of the distance and velocity of target by employing GSFM with minimized pulse length. To evaluate our method, we simulated an underwater environment with reverberation. In the simulation, a linear frequency modulation of 0.05 s caused an average distance estimation error of 50 % and a velocity estimation error of 103 % due to limited frequency band. In contrast, GSFM accurately and quickly tracked targets with distance and velocity estimation errors of 10 % and 14 %, respectively, even with pulses of the same length. Furthermore, GSFM provided approximate azimuth information by transmitting highly orthogonal subpulses for each azimuth.

  • In order to successfully exploit underwater resources, the first step would be a marine environmental research and exploration on the seafloor. Traditionally one sets up a long-term underwater experimental unit on the seafloor and retrieves the unit later after a certain period time. Essential to these applications is the reliable teleoperation and telemetering of the unit. This study presents ultrasonic-wave remote control system and an underwater sound recognition algorithm that can identify the sound signal without the influence of disturbances due to underwater environmental changes. The proposed method provides a means suitable for units which require low power dissipation and long-time underwater operation. We demonstrate its ability of securing stability and fast sound recognition through experimental methods.

  • The main characteristics of the underwater acoustic channel have varying multipath and fast fading. Especially, Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) signals with multiple frequency bands caused loss of information bits allocated on the specific frequencies due to selective fading phenomenon. Therefore, this paper proposes frequency gain control algorithm based on preamble error rates. The proposed algorithm estimates optimal gain value in the range of preamble error rate with less than 10 % for specific faded frequency. By employing turbo equalized FSK signals with rate of 1/3, the experiment was conducted on a lake in Munkyeong city with distance of 300 m to 500 m. The result confirms that packets are decoded successfully by applying proposed algorithm as increasing number of iterations.

  • Communication environments in the context of underwater channel are characterized to be bad by the characteristics of multipath. Multipaths are affected by various factors e.g. the temperature and the salinity of the ocean. In this paper, the representative sound speed profiles were calculated in the southern part of Baengnyeoung island so that the eigen-ray paths with the channel impulse responses were determined using the average sound speed profile of last decade. The performance of underwater communication was analyzed using the BPSK modulation and time reversal method. The significant differences of results were shown according to the change of season and carrier frequency by using computer simulation. In addition, improved performance is obtained using preprocess channel impulse response for the better comparison of two cases of summer and autumn.

  • As a criterion of information theoretic learning, the Euclidean distance (ED) of two error probability distribution functions (minimum ED of error, MEDE) has been adopted in nonlinear (decision feedback, DF) supervised equalizer algorithms and has shown significantly improved performance in severe channel distortion and impulsive noise environments. However, the MEDE-DF algorithm has the problem of heavy computational complexity. In this paper, the recursive ED for MEDE-DF algorithm is derived first, and then the feed-forward and feedback section gradients for weight update are estimated recursively. To prove the effectiveness of the recursive gradient estimation for the MEDE-DF algorithm, the number of multiplications are compared and MSE performance in impulsive noise and underwater communication environments is compared through computer simulation. The ratio of the number of multiplications between the proposed DF and the conventional MEDE-DF algorithm is revealed to be $2(9N+4):2(3N^2+3N)$ for the sample size N with the same MSE learning performance in the impulsive noise and underwater channel environment.

  • In underwater communications, to compensate performance degradation induced from rapidly changing channel transfer characteristic, multi-band communication method which allocate the same data to different frequency bands is used. However, the multi-band configuration may have worse performance than the single-band one because performance degradation in a particular band affects the output from the entire bands. This problem can be solved through a receiving end that analyzes error rates of each band, sets threshold values and allocates lower weights to inferior bands. Therefore, this paper proposed a weighting algorithm based on estimated Bit Error Rate (BER) which analyzes reliability of received data based on the performance difference between demodulated and decoded data. Employing turbo codes with coding rate of 1/3, we evaluate the performance of the proposed weighted multi-band transmission model in real underwater environments based on optimal simulation parameters. Through the sea trial experiment, we confirmed error performance was improved by applying the proposed weighting algorithm.

  • For long-range communication in deep water, low carrier frequency is efficient due to a decrease in transmission loss. However, there is a limitation in that the data rate decreases due to a narrow bandwith. In order to increase the data rate in an environment with a limited bandwidth, it is necessary to design a higher-order modulation scheme. This paper analyzes the long-range communication data modulated by higher-order modulation schemes. The long-range communication experiment (23 km ~) was conducted in East Sea in October 2020. During the experiment, a vertical line array was utilized and communication sequences were modulated by Phase Shift Keying (PSK) and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) schemes and transmitted by a towed source. In more detail, PSK modulation consists of quadrature PSK and 8PSK, QAM modulation consists of 8QAM and 16QAM. Time reversal processing is applied to mitigate inter-symbol interference by utilizing the correlation between received signals and channel impulse responses. All modulation schemes show successful results at 23 km range, demonstrating the feasibility of higher-order modulation in long-range communication.
