  • It is important to research and understand the physical phenomenon around a semi-submersible offshore structure on waves and currents because the wave run-up and load occurs owing to the waves and currents. In this study, the numerical simulations are performed about flow around a fixed semi-submersible offshore structure. The Modified Marker-density method is adopted in the present computation procedure, this method is one of the various methods to define the free-surface. The present computation results are compared with existing experimental and numerical simulation(VOF method) results. And, the computation results are relatively coincident with the existing results of model test and numerical simulation by VOF method.

  • Numerical simulations for the flows containing free surface remain difficult problems because the drastic differences of physical properties of water and air, The difference of densities makes the solution instable in particular. For the stabilities of the solutions, the most typical methods to simulate free surface flows, such as Volume Of Fluid(VOF) and Level-Set(LS) methods, impose transient zones where the physical prosperities are continuously distributed. The thickness of the transient zone is the source of the numerical errors. The other side, marker-density method does not use such a transient zone. In the traditional marker-density method, however, the air velocities of free surface cells are extrapolated from the water velocity, and the pressures on the free surface are extrapolated from the air pressures for the stability of the solution. In this study, the marker-density method is modified for the decrease of such numerical errors. That is, the pressure on the free surface is determined to coincide with the pressure gradient terms of the governing equations, and the velocity of free surface cells are calculated with the governing equations. Two-dimensional steady spilling breakers behind of a submersed hydrofoil and three-dimensional spilling breaker near a wedge shaped ship model are simulated using INHAWAVE-II including the modified marker-density(MMD) method. The results are compared with the results of Fluent V6.3 including VOF method and several published research results.

  • Using a nonconforming mesh in enrichment methods results in several numerical issues induced by discontinuities and singularities found within the solution spaces, including the computational overhead during integration. In this study, we present a novel enrichment technique based on the selective expansion technique of moment fitting (Düster and Allix, 2020). In particular, two modifications are proposed to address the inefficiency during the integration process. First, a feedforward artificial neural network is introduced to correlate the implicit functions and integration moments. Through numerical examples, it is shown that the efficiency of the method is greatly improved when compared with existing expansion techniques, whereas the solution accuracy is maintained. Additionally, the finite element and domain representation grids are separated, which in turn improves the solution accuracy even for coarse mesh conditions.

  • In this study, numerical simulations of slamming impact pressure acting on the flat plate and wedge type models using the cartesian-grid system and Modified Marker-Density Method (MMD method) were performed and the results were examined. The flat plate and wedge type models were selected as target objects, the turbulence characteristics were considered by applying the Sub-Grid Scale (SGS) turbulence model. Through this study, how the pressure acting on the target objects according to the incident angle influences the slamming impact pressure was examined and the results were compared with the flow characteristics of other experimental results. Also, the degree of slamming impact pressure is evaluated with respect to the cartesian-grid system and MMD method, which is easy to use and has a high degree of calculation for free surface.

  • In this study, an improved post-processing technique for correcting MRI artifact due to the unknown respiratory motion in the imaging plane is presented. Respiratory motion is modeled by a two-Dimensional linear expending-shrinking movement. Assuming that the body tissues are incompressible fluid like materials, the proton density per unit volume of the imaging object is kept constant. According to the introduced model, respiratory motion imposes phase error, non-uniform sampling and amplitude modulation distortions on the acquired MRI data. When the motion parameters are known or can be estimatead a reconstruction algorithm based on biliner superposition method was used to correct the MRI artifact. In the case of motion parameters are unknown, first, the spectrum shift method is applied to find the respiratory fluctuation function, x directional expansion coefficient and x directional expansion center. Next, y directional expansion coefficient and y directional expansion center are estimated by using the minimum energy method. Finally, the validity of this proposed method is shown to be effective by using the simulated motion images.

  • In the study, numerical simulation on the greenwater impact load of free surface offshore structure in the regular waves using fixed cartesian grid system and Modified Marker-Density (MMD) method were carried out and the results were reviewed. In order to compare numerical simulation and experimental results, the FPSO with the scale ratio of 1/100 model ship with fixed rectangular deck was selected and turbulence characteristic of the flow was considered by applying the Sub-Grid Scale (SGS) in laminar flow. As a result, it is reviewed how the greenwater impact load inflowed from bow in regular headsea wave influence the flow on the deck and the flow characteristic by numerical simulation and the experiment results were compared and reviewed. Based on this study, it would be useful to numerically study the effect of greenwater on offshore structure.

  • It is the unavoidable problem that the RMR rock classification method has the uncertainty resulted from uncertain definition of measured value in RMR grade table, hence in this paper, the estimation of probability density function$(p{\cdot}d{\cdot}f)$ graph with the evaluation of continuos RMR and the Monte Carlo Simulation and statistic reasoning were carried out to evaluate the uncertainty quantitatively. Also, the modified RMR rock classification table was presented in order to apply the uncertainty of RMR to the practice, and then the design process of standard support pattern and the tunnel support material was proposed.
