  • In this study, a conventional pipeline unsteady friction model has been integrated into Levenberg Marquardt method to calibrate friction coefficient in a pipeline system. The method of characteristics has been employed as the modeling platform for the frequency dependant model of unsteady friction. In order to obtain Hessian and Jacobian matrix for optimization, the direct differentiation of pressure to friction factor was calculated and sensitivities to friction for heads and discharges were formulated for implementation to the integration constant in the characteristic method. Using a hypothetical simple pipeline system, time series of pressure, introduced by a sudden valve closure, were obtained for various Reynolds numbers. Convergency in fiction factors were evaluated both in steady and unsteady friction models. The comparison of calibration performance between the proposed method and genetic algorithm indicates that faster and stabler behaviour of Levenberg Marquardt method than those of evolutionary calibration.

  • A series of shaking table model tests were performed to verify the validity of similitude law, which is suggested by lai (1989) to simulate the dynamic behavior of soil-fluid-structure system for is shaking table tests. In the tests, the similitude law suggested by lai was applied to determine the length and the time scaling factors. Also, the steady state concept was used in determining the density of model backfill soil, which is a key factor in simulating the development of excess pore pressure during shaking. The similitude law was verified by checking whether three different sizes of quay walls show the identical behavior or not. The similar responses of acceleration, excess pore pressure and horizontal displacement of walls were obtained far the small and large models. However, the medium model showed larger responses than those of the small and large models because of the resonance between the frequency of input acceleration and the natural frequency of the wall system. In addition, the vertical displacement and rotational angle of the walls became larger with the increase of model size.

  • Various approaches have been developed for the dynamic response analysis of piles. In one of the approaches, the soil-pile interaction is approximated by using parallel nonlinear springs, namely the p-y curves. Currently available p-y curve recommendations are based on static and cyclic lateral load tests. Other researchers have attempted to extend the p-y curves by incorporating the effects of liquefaction on soil-pile interaction and derived scaling factors of p-y curves to account fur the liquefaction. However, opinions on the scaling factors vary. In this study, the sealing factors, which reflect the variation of the elastic moduli of surrounding soils, were established combining the relationship between excess pore pressures and the natural frequencies of a soil-pile system obtained from Ig shaking table tests and the relationship between the elastic moduli of surrounding soils and the natural frequencies of a soil-pile system obtained from numerical analyses. As a result, the scaling factors were presented in an exponential function.

  • This study presents channel design of a CDI stack to achieve high removal efficiency in a large scale by applying parallel flow structure with a concentrated stream. The flow pattern in the stack was simulated by COMSOL Multiphysics program. To prove the salt removal performance, a unit cell and 20 cell stacks were tested at a flow rate condition of 18 ml/min and 360 ml/min, respectively. The removal efficiencies of the unit cell and the 20 cell stacks were obtained as 70.8 % and 75.6 %, respectively, with 100 mg/L sodium chloride solution. During the operation of cell test, water pressures of unit cell and 20 cell pair stack maintained in the ranges of 1.1 psi and 1.3~1.5 psi, respectively. It was demonstrated that the parallel cell structure with two concentrated streams can be employed in a large scale CDI for salt removal.

  • A pyrogen type igniter was designed to satisfy the requirements of KSLV-I Kick Motor system. To insure the reliability of the igniter before the production of the flight model, we have been performed the structure, environmental, combustion tests. The hydraulic test was carried out to confirm the strength of the components of the igniter. The shock and vibration tests were considered to check whether the igniter operates normally under the severe environmental condition. The combustion tests were also performed to understand the ignition characteristics with the variation of initial condition. Finally, we confirmed that the igniter could provide the acceptable energy to ignite the propellant of kick motor at the ground test.

  • Moutain side ditch is constructed at the top of cutting slopes around road and it drains the surface water that flowed from upper part. About 70% of a country is composed of mountains so occurrence of cutting face by road general observation is necessary. Instability of cutting face is increased by permeation of underground water by rainfall the summer, pore water pressure increases. However, moutain side ditch is constructed on the top of cutting slopes has some troubles. For example, difficulty of qualify control and lack of drainage faculty. Therefore, stability variation of cutting slope is analyzed by hydraulic conductivity and construction depth of mountain side ditch and effective depth of mountain side ditch is decided in this paper.

  • It is reported that a typical multivariable system of chemical process type was constructed and control experiment was conducted using a $\mu$-computer instead of using conventional hardwave controller. When the pressure of water to be supplied to the multivariable system is varying, an adaptive control method using a flowmeter is suggested to enhance the control performance.

  • Recently the large scale civil engineering projects are being implemented by reclaiming the sea or utilizing seashore and river embankment areas. The reclaimed land and utilized seashore are mostly soft ground that doesn't have sufficient bearing capacity. This soft ground consists of fine-grained soil such as clayey and silty soils or large void soil like peat or loose sand. It has high ground water table and it may cause the failure and crock of building foundation by uplift pressure and ground water leakage. In this study, the permittivity and the transmissivity were evaluated with the applied normal pressure in the laboratory. The laboratory model tests were conducted by utilizing geocomposite drainage system for draining the water out to release the uplift pressure. The soil used in the laboratory drainage test was dredged soil from the reclaimed land where uplift pressure problems can arise in soil condition. Geocomposite drainage system was installed at the bottom of apparatus and dredged soil was layered with compaction. Subsequently the water pressure was supplied from the top of specimen and the quantities of drainage and the pore water pressure were measured at each step water pressure. The results of laboratory measurements were compared with theoretical values. For the evaluation of propriety of laboratory drainage test, 2-D finite elements analysis that can analyze the distribution and the transferring of pore water pressure was conducted and compared with laboratory test results.

  • The centrifuge and 1-g shaking table tests were performed simultaneously to compare the dynamic behaviors of loose sands of the same geotechnical properties. The prototype soils were 10 m thick liquefiable loose sands. The geometric scaling factors were 20 for 1-g and 40 for centrifuge tests. The excess pore pressure, surface settlement, and acceleration in the soil were measured at the same locations in the 1-g and centrifuge tests. The total excess pore pressure from development to dissipation was measured. In the centrifuge test, viscous fluid was used as the pore water to eliminate the time scaling difference between dynamic time and dissipation time. In the 1-g tests, the steady state concept was applied to determine the unit weight of the model soil, and two different time scaling factors were applied for the dynamic time and the dissipation time. It is concluded that the 1-g tests can simulate the excess pore pressure of the prototype soil if the permeability of the model soil is small enough to prevent dissipation of excess pore pressure during shaking and the dissipation time scaling factor is properly determined.
