A Study on the Odor Characteristics and Identification of Microbial in Biological Swine Manure Treatment Process by Bioreactor (생물반응기를 도입한 돈분뇨의 생물학적 처리공정에서 악취발생 특성 및 미생물동정에 관한 연구)

  • A bioreactor filling with pellets and stones was equipped to the swine manure treatment system, which is expected to emit high concentration of odor in the process of the organic wastewater treatment system, and in comparison with the activated sludge process as the control process, the reactor operation state, treatment water quality and odor emission concentration were measured. The reactor using the bioreactor proved to be much more stable in the bubble condition, treatment water transparency, etc, and BOD removal efficiency was also much better. The removal efficiency of T-N and T-P, however, showed little difference in the two reactors. Odor, as a result of examining $NH_3-N$, $NH_3$ concentratio, and complex odor, was 4 times to 24 times less emitted in the system using bioreactor than in the activated sludge system. $H_2S$, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, and dimethyl disulfide were not found or were found in only 5 ppbs in each reactor and showed little difference between the two reactors. In the bioreactor process, Bacillus sp./ Pseudomonas sp. species were mainly found and in the activated sludge process, acterium sp. Chryseobacterium sp. species were mainly found.

Effects of Intake Gas Mixture Cooling on Enhancement of The Maximum Brake Power in a 2.4 L Hydrogen Spark-ignition Engine (수소 내연기관의 흡기 냉각 방법에 따른 최고 출력 향상에 관한 연구)

  • Since hydrogen has the lower minimum ignition energy than that of gasoline, hydrogen could be also appropriate for the IC engine systems. However, due to the low ignition energy, there might be a 'back-fire' and 'pre-ignition' problems with hydrogen SI(Spark-ignition) combustion. In this research, cooling effects of intake gas mixture on the improvement of the maximum power output were evaluated in a 2.4 L SI engine. There were two ways to cool intake gas mixtures. The first one was cooling intake fresh air by adjusting inter-cooler system after turbocharger. The other one was cooling hydrogen fuel before supplying by using heat ex-changer. Cooling hydrogen was performed under natural aspired condition. The result showed that cooling fresh air from 40 ℃ to 20~30 ℃ improved the maximum brake power up to 6.5~8.6 % and cooling hydrogen fuel as -6 ℃ enhanced the maximum brake power likewise.

  • Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have gained much attention as eco-friendly energy conversion devices without emission of environmental pollutant. Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) that can transfer proton from anode to cathode and also prevent fuel cross-over has been regarded as a key component of PEMFCs. Although perfluorinated polymer membranes such as Nafion® were already commercialized in PEMFCs, their high cost and toxic byproduct generated by degradation have still limited the wide spread of PEMFCs. To overcome these issues, development of hydrocarbon based PEMs have been studied. Incorporation of cross-linked structure into the hydrocarbon based PEM system has been reported to fabricate the PEMs showing both high proton conductivity and outstanding physicochemical stability. This study focused on the various cross-linking strategies to the preparation of cross-linked PEMs based on hydrocarbon polymers with ion conducting groups for application in PEMFCs.

Research Trends of Ni-based Catalysts on Steam Reforming of Bio-oils for H2 Production: A Review (수소 생산을 위한 바이오오일 수증기 개질 반응에서의 니켈계 촉매 연구동향)

  • Hydrogen has been gaining a lot of attention as a possible clean energy source that can aid in reaching carbon neutrality. Currently, hydrogen production has relied on the steam reforming of fossil fuels. However, due to the carbon dioxide emissions caused by this process, hydrogen production based on the steam reforming of bio-oil derived from biomass has been proposed as an alternative approach. In order to use this alternative approach efficiently, one of the key issues that must be overcome is that the complexity of bio-oil, which has a large molecular weight and diverse functional groups of hydrocarbons, promotes the catalytic deactivation of nickel-based catalysts. In this review, research efforts to improve nickel-based catalysts for the steam reforming of bio-oil have been discussed in terms of the active phase, support, and promoters. The active phases are involved in activating C-C and C-H bonds of high-molecular-weight hydrocarbons, and noble and transition metals can be utilized. In terms of the support and promoters, the catalytic deactivation of Ni-based catalysts can be inhibited by utilizing reactive lattice oxygen for support or by suppressing the acidity. The development of active and stable Ni-based reforming catalysts plays a critical role in clean hydrogen production based on bio-oils.

Origin and Reservoir Types of Abiotic Native Hydrogen in Continental Lithosphere (대륙 암석권에서 무기 자연 수소의 성인과 부존 형태)

  • Natural or native abiotic molecular hydrogen (H2) is a major component in natural gas, however yet its importance in the global energy sector's usage as clean and renewable energy is underestimated. Here we review the occurrence and geological settings of native hydrogen to demonstrate the much widesprease H2 occurrence in nature by comparison with previous estimations. Three main types of source rocks have been identified: (1) ultramafic rocks; (2) cratons comprising iron (Fe2+)-rich rocks; and (3) uranium-rich rocks. The rocks are closely associated with Precambrian crystalline basement and serpentinized ultramafic rocks from ophiolite and peridotite either at mid-ocean ridges or within continental margin(Zgonnik, 2020). Inorganic geological processes producing H2 in the source rocks include (a) the reduction of water during the oxidation of Fe2+ in minerals (e.g., olivine), (b) water splitting due to radioactive decay, (c) degassing of magma at low pressure, and (d) the reaction of water with surface radicals during mechanical breaking (e.g., fault) of silicate rocks. Native hydrogen are found as a free gas (51%), fluid inclusions in various rock types (29%), and dissolved gas in underground water (20%) (Zgonnik, 2020). Although research on H2 has not yet been carried out in Korea, the potential H2 reservoirs in the Gyeongsang Basin are highly probable based on geological and geochemical characteristics including occurrence of ultramafic rocks, inter-bedded basaltic layers and iron-copper deposits within thick sedimentary basin and igneous activities at an active continental margin during the Permian-Paleogene. The native hydrogen is expected to be clean and renewable energy source in the near future. Therefore it is clear that the origin and exploration of the native hydrogen, not yet been revealed by an integrated studies of rock-fluid interaction studies, are a field of special interest, regardless of the presence of economic native hydrogen reservoirs in Korea.

  • The Because of its high thermal efficiency, the direct injection (DI) diesel engine has emerged as a promising potential candidate in the field of transportation. However, the amount of nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) increases in the local high-temperature regions and that of particulate matter (PM) increases in the diffusion flame region during diesel combustion. In the de-$NO_x$ system the Lean $NO_x$ Trap (LNT) catalyst is used, which absorbs $NO_x$ under lean exhaust gas conditions and releases it in rich conditions. This technology can provide a high $NO_x$-conversion efficiency, but the right amount of reducing agent should be supplied to the catalytic converter at the right time. In this research, the emission characteristics of a diesel engine equipped with a micro-reformer that acts as a reductants-supplying equipment were investigated using an LNT system, and the effects of the exhaust-gas temperature were also studied.

  • Thermal stability of exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (exo-THDCP) were investigated in a batch-type reactor perfectly coated with quartz. The 1 ml liquid product, which was a sufficiently small amount so as not to affect the reaction pressure, was sampled at 90 min intervals during the reaction and determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to measure thermal decomposition products of exo-THDCP and specify mechanism for additives (thermal stabilizer). Hydrogen donors (thermal stabilizer) such as 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (THQ), benzyl alcohol (BnOH) increased thermal stability of exo-THDCP. These materials donated hydrogen to radical of exo-THDCP produced after initiation of exo-THDCP to decrease activity of primary products of exo-THDCP.

  • 폐기물의 감량화 및 자원화 기술 중 가장 대표적인 기술로 폐기물의 가스화 용융 기술을 들 수 있다. 폐기물 가스화 용융 기술은 폐기물 내의 탄소 및 수소 성분은 가스화 하여 CO, $H_2$가 주성분인 합성가스(synthesis gas, syngas)로 전환하고, 불연물은 용융하여 환경적으로 무해한 슬래그 또는 금속으로 회수하는 기술이다. 본 연구에서는 고발열량폐기물과 탈수슬러지 혼합가스화를 통하여 생산된 합성가스를 합성가스 압축기를 통하여 유용한 원료물질을 제조하는 공정인 수성가스 전환 반응(water gas shift reaction)과 가스화 반응기의 보조연료로 투입하기 위한 합성가스 압축, 이송 시스템의 운전 특성을 고찰하였다. 그 결과 고발열량폐기물과 탈수슬러지 혼합가스화에서 합성가스는 안정적으로 발생하였으며, 합성가스 압축, 이송시스템을 위한 정제설비에서의 분진제거는 99.07 %의 효율을 얻었고, 또한 합성가스 재순환 장치의 성능시험을 통하여 대기 중의 산소가 유입이 안 되는 기밀성을 확인하였다. 합성가스 압축, 이송 공급 유량 제어 실험 결과로는 합성가스 압축기 기동 시 합성가스 압축압력과 공급유량은 비례적으로 증감하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Application of Non-Thermal Plasma for the Simultaneous Removal of Odor and Sludge (무기악취와 슬러지 동시처리를 위한 저온플라즈마의 적용)

  • In this study, odorous compounds emitted from various wastewater treatment were treated with using the non-thermal plasma reaction, and the effluent gas from the plasma reactor was introduced to a waste sludge reactor to achieve simultaneous sludge reduction. Hydrogen sulfide, the model odorous compound, was removed at 70% using the plasma reaction, and greater than 99% removal efficiency was observed when treated by the sludge reactor. In addition, the sludge reactor showed a high efficiency of ozone removal. As ozone reacted with sludge, oxidation with organic matters took place, and total COD decreased by 50~60% and soluble COD increased gradually. As a result, the integrated process consisting of the non-thermal plasma and the sludge reactor can be successfully applied for the simultaneous treatment of malodorous gas and waste sludge.

The Effect of Continuous and Intermittent Aeration on Hog Manure Composting and Odor Control through Fresh Compost (연속 및 간헐통기가 돈분 퇴비화 및 생퇴비 탈취에 미치는 영향)

  • 가축분뇨, 음식쓰레기 둥의 유기성 고형 폐기물의 퇴비화처리 과정의 성능 향상과 암모니아 가스 발생을 저감화 하려는 연구의 일환으로서 파이로트 규모의 원통형 회분식 분해조 및 숙성조를 설계, 제작하여 퇴비화 성능과 탈취 효과를 분석하였다. 고형퇴비화 처리에 미치는 주요요인은 초기재료의 수분, 탄질비, 수소이온농도, 발효온도 및 통기조건 등이다. 돈분에 부자재인 톱밥을 혼합하여 초기 재료의 수분, 탄질비, 수소이온농도 등을 동일한 재료로서 같은 수준에 유지하고 연속통기와 간헐통기 방식으로 퇴비화하는 동안에 분해 및 숙성단계의 부위별 발효온도의 변화, 산소흡수 및 탄산가스 배출농도의 변동, 평균통기량, 재료의 평균온도 변화, 암모니아가스 배출농도의 변화 등을 분해 및 숙성 전기간을 통해 측정하고 초기재료와 숙성재료의 주요 이화학적 성분을 분석하여 퇴비화 성능과 회비 탈취 효율을 비교하였다. 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 숙성과정 8일 이후의 암모니아가스 탈취효율은 연속통기법이 90%이고, 간헐통기법이 70%였으며, 분해 및 숙성과정의 발효온도, 탄산가스 발생, 암모니아가스 배출농도 및 숙성회비의 성분 둥의 결과로서 판단할 때 에 퇴비 화 소요기 간은 6주간이었다. 2. 탄산가스 배출농도 변화로서 간헐통기 퇴비화 방식은 연속통기법에 비하여 분해과정이 7일 정도 빠르고, 숙성과정이 10일 정도 단축되었으며 암모니아가스 농도도 적게 나타나고 있었다. 3. 퇴비화 분해과정이 지난 후 숙성과정 도입단계에서 퇴비재료의 혼합 교반에 따른 재료의 고온상승으로 인한 암모니아가스의 고농도화 현상의 억제대책이 필요하다고 판단되었다.
