  • Diffusion and accumulation of ethoprophos in fruit such as apple and two types of pears were examined by dipping them into the solution of ethoprophos. The effective diffusivities of ethoprophos at the skin and flesh of apple and pear were determined by simulation their experimental accumulation curves with calculated ones from the model assuming consecutive diffusion of ethoprophos from skin to flesh. Its effective diffusivity at the flesh with higher content of water were higher, $\sim10^{-10}\;m^2/s$, regardless of the types of fruits, while that at the skin was small, $\sim10^{-12}\;m^2/s$ and increased with the order of 'Niitaka' pear < 'Whangkeumbae' pear < 'Fuji' apple. The variation in the concentration of ethoprophos in its solution did not induce any change in affecting its effective diffusivity at the flesh of 'Whangkeumbae' pear, but the increase in the concentration caused the increase in its effective diffusivity at the skin. The penetration rate of ethoprophos at the skin was an important factor in determining its accumulation rate in fruit.

  • Leaf diffusive resistance (LDR), stomatal density, length of guard cell and hair density of leaves of 6 oak species were determined under withdrawal of water, and their strategies of drought stress were analyzed by principal component analysis. LDR of Quercus acutissima, Q. aliena and Q. serrata increased earlier than those of the other species at high leaf water potential $({\Psi}_{leaf})$ or low water saturation deficit (WSD), which was an avoidance mechanism reducing damage by water stress. Q. variabilis with low stomatal density, small stomatal size and high hair density had avoidance mechanisms increasing LDR at high $({\Psi}_{leaf})$ However, Q. mongolica and Q. dentata increased LDR at low $({\Psi}_{leaf})$ as xeric species do. Results from principal component analysis on the 15 variables related to strategies of drought stress indicated that the 6 oak species were divided into 2 groups: (1) Q. acutissima, Q. aliena and Q. serrata as mesic habitat species and (2) Q. variabilis, Q. mongolica and Q. dentata as xeric habitat species. Among three xeric species Q. acutissima differed from the other two species in the drought strategies such as high hair density, low stornatal density, high leaf area ratio, stomatal closing at low $({\Psi}_{leaf})$ and small cell wall elasticity. The results could reasonably explain their drought strategies in natural habitat.

  • Brown rices were abrasively milled to give 92% yield, and hydration and cooking rates of brown and milled rices were investigated. Diffusion coefficients of Japonica brown and milled rices at $30^{\circ}C$ were smaller than those of J/Indica counterparts. The bran layer controlled the diffusion coefficients of brown rices at initial stage of hydration. The diffusion coefficients for Japonica and J/lndica milled rices were $107{\sim}114$ and $74{\sim}87$ times greater than those for brown rices, respectively. The terminal points of cooking of brown and milled rices at $110^{\circ}C$ were similar among varieties. The cooking rate constants of milled rices were about 2-fold compared with those of brown rices.

  • The hydration characteristics of four naked baley varieties by different kernel sizes were investigated. The predominant kernel size was 7 mesh, followed by 10 mesh kernel, of which comprised $86{\sim}94%$ of the total kernel. Diffusion coefficients of naked barleys at $40^{\circ}C$ increased as the kernel sizes decreased. The volume increases of naked barleys were linearly related to the moisture gain, regardless variety and kernel size.

  • Gas diffusion layer (GDL) compression is important parameter of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) performance to have an effect on contact resistance, reactants transfer to electrode, water content in membrane and electrode assembly (MEA). In this study, the effect of GDL compression on fuel cell performance was investigated for commercial products, JNT20-A3. Polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was performed at different relative humidity and compression ratio using electrode area of 25 ㎠ unit cell. The contact resistance was reduced to 8, 30 mΩ·㎠ and membrane hydration was increased as GDL compression increase from 18.6% to 38.1% at relative humidity of 100 and 25%, respectively. It was identified through ohmic resistance change at relative humidity conditions that as GDL compression increased, water back-diffusion from cathode and electrolyte membrane hydration was increased because GDL porosity was decreased.

  • This study compared and analyzed the thermal characteristics based on the ratio of moisture content of infected and non-infected Bursaphelenchus Xylophilus by heat of combustion experiment. The experiment results are as follows. The analysisresult of the ratio of water content shows that 19.92% on average for infected Bursaphelenchus Xylophilus and 26.27% for non-infected which decreases water content as the size of conduction, convection, and radiant heat increases in case of fire. As the vaporization of the moisture content accelerates, the average moisture content is reached, and the result is contrary to the thermal characteristics of the wood that the moisture content is not ignited by a heat source when the moisture content is under 15%. The combustion heat analysis result showed that infected and non-infected Bursaphelenchus Xylophilus had no significant difference in combustion heat at about 3%. However, it shows that combustion heat is higher than other species. In conclusion, decreasing in moisture content based on the increasing conduction, convection, and radiant heat is one of the direct causes of ignition, and the lower the moisture content, the faster the fire spreads.

  • This study was conducted to investigate herbicidal efficacy and diffusibility of halosulfuron-methyl+mefenacet in water treated with 500 g great granule (GG) and 3 kg granule (GR). The 500 g GG was been spreading on the surface of the water within 6 minutes, 53 seconds, and it's active ingredient was diffused in the water bath of $10m^2$ size between 30 and 60 minutes. In addition, the diffusion of 500 g GG was influenced by moisture contents, so it have to immediately use 500 g GG in paddy fields when it was been unpacked. The herbicidal efficacy of the 500 g GG and 3 kg GR of halosulfuron-methyl+mefenacet was excellent to most weed species, but showed different efficacy for the control of Aneilema keisak and Scirpus juncoides, that was may be distribution pattern of active ingredient as different formulation.

  • In the concrete structures exposed to environmental conditions at early ages, water movement occurs by moisture diffusion in the concrete, and self-desiccation of concrete is also occurred. Thus the internal relative humidity is changed from moisture diffusion and self-desiccation. Thus the internal relative humidity at each location in concrete includes the decrease by self-desiccation. Especially, for high-strength concrete the much unit cement content is used, so that the non-uniform relative humidity distribution is affected form self-desiccation at early ages. In this study, the internal relative humidity in concrete was measured at early ages, and the moisture diffusion component and self-desiccation component of total relative humidity were discussed.
