  • The construction cost for the single shell tunnel is cheaper than that of the double shell tunnel according to the case studies performed in several domestic and foreign tunnels. However, the economic advantage of single shell tunnel drops drastically as the condition of the rock mass deteriorates. Therefore, the single shell tunnelling method should be applied to the good rock mass conditions. The application of the single shell tunnelling method to tunnels in Korea should be determined considering the ratio between the good rock and poor rock masses along the tunnel section. The use of the single shell tunnel is expected to offend depending on the cheap supply of high quality shotcrets and rock bolts developed for single shell tunnels.

  • Korean shotcrete technology has been developed by constructing underground space, roads and rails for expanding SOC project. To late, importance of shotcrete is raised due to the efforts for semi-permanent use of underground structure and a long term safety. Shotcrete method and quality criterion have been developed continuously in abroad, but there are no standard and quality criterion of shotcrete in Korea. International quality criterion has been used to domestic conditions, so various problems are occurred in construction field, material, mixture, equipment, and so on. In this study, to establish standard of domestic shotcrete, both internal and external quality criteria were investigate and opinion poll was performed in the construction field. Field test was performed to propose a quality improvement on the shotcrete material.

  • This study has analysed actual overbreak, shotcrete rebound and the ratio between the actual quantity of shotcrete to designed shotcrete measured during a NATM tunnel construction. The measured shotcrete rebound was about 7.2% in average which was about half the allowable rebound (15%), showing shotcrete spraying was performed well. Based on the measurement of excavated tunnel shape, average overbreak was about 28.5cm after tunnel excavation by drill and blasting method. This was about 260% of allowable overbreak. In addition, due to the rebound and overbreak actual amount of shotcrete used in the tunnelling work was about 116.5 % of the designed value. According to the field measurement the ratio of actual shotcrete to designed value showed some relation with standard support pattern, but the size of overbreak did not show the correlation with standard support pattern. Hence current design specifications stating the size of overbreak based entirely on standard support pattern should perhaps be reestablished. The insight into the design guideline regarding overbreak and shotcrete.

  • The experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of coarse aggregate, admixture, and accelerator on the properties of concrete. As the maximum size of coarse aggregate decreased from 13 mm to 8 mm, fluidity of fresh concrete declined but compressive strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity of hardened concrete increased remarkably. The mechanical properties of concrete substituted silica fume to the plain concrete improved, the compressive strength of that substituted blast furnace slag increased slightly. The hydration reaction and compressive strength of specimen with sodium luminate type accelerator were high at initial, but specimen with alkali free type accelerator improved largely in 28 days.

  • This paper presents the tensile strength of shotcrete steel fibers depending on the shape of steel fiber. The experimental and numerical analyses are performed in this study. In experimental study, a series of laboratory pullout tests are carried out by changing both the angle and the length of the embedded steel fiber according to the corresponding type of steel fiber in order to derive the optimal type of steel fiber. Results obtained from the experimental work are evaluated and compared with the numerical analysis results. The results clearly show that the pull-out strength of the steel fiber are increased with increasing the hook angle and embedded angle of steel fiber. It is also found that the pull-out strength of the steel fiber is larger in case of the short steel fiber body length.

  • Submarine tunnels are affected by the surrounding environments more than regular tunnels. Especially, they are often vulnerable to damage by salt in seawater. Seawater is more likely to affect reinforcing rods and steel fibers than concrete. Recently the usage of anti-corrosive fibers increases in the tunnel which is subject to the possibility of damage. By comparing the capability of polypropylene fibers with that of steel fibers, the proper mixture ratio is decided and the supporting capability of polypropylene fibers was tested using round panel and beam specimens. The results of this study can be of great use in selecting the fiber material and designing of fiber reinforced shotcrete of submarine tunnels.

  • In this study to improve the chloride durability of the shotcrete structure depending on types and contents of mineral admixture chloride resistance was evaluated by NT BUILD 492 of european test standards. It was also evaluated with the mechanical properties such as static strength and chloride penetration resistance. For shotcrete mixed crushed stone aggregate of the maximum size 10mm of coarse aggregates was produced. Based on 28days compression strength the variable mixed with 15% silica fume showed the highest strength in 67.55MPa. As the content of fly ash and blast furnace slag increased, the strength lowered. In the chloride penetration resistance test, OPC showed "high grade" and In the case of admixture, the penetration resistance tended to increase in all variables except the fly ash. In order to evaluate the service life, the accelerated chloride penetration test was conducted by the standards of KCL, ACI, FIB. Test results were obtained with the lowest spreading factor in a variable mixed with silica fume of 15%. At the KCI standards, It was found to have a service life of about 65 years and at the FIB standards, It was found to have a service life of 131 years. Among standards, the service life of KCI standard in all of the variables was evaluated as the lowest.

  • Currently NATM tunnels are designed by applying the initial ground loads caused during construction to the primary supports, conisting of shotcrete, steel ribs and rock bolts. For long term considerations, it is assumed that the primary supports lose its functionality and therefore the secondary support, i.e. concrete lining, is design to resist against the entire ground loads. But the steel ribs, usually applied to bad ground conditions, are embedded in shotcrete causing very little corrosion and therefore the assumption that the primary support will lose all of its functionality is too conservative. Also even though shotcrete carbonates in long term, excluding it from design is also too conservative. In this study, we have, through analytical and numerical analysis, set a rational level of support pressure and allowable relaxed rock mass height sustainable by the primary support for long term design. Changes in sectional forces of the concrete lining considering the calculated support pressure of the primary supports was also carried out. Shallow subway tunnels were considered in the analysis with weathered rock and soft rock ground conditions. The analysis results showed that, by considering the support pressure of steel ribs, an economical design of the concrete lining is possible.

  • In order to investigate the tendency of general displacements and behaviors with respect to each construction process as well as the applicability of numerical analysis schemes, this research has focused on not only analyzing a variety of field observations made in a NATM tunnel, such as displacement of top and side, stress of shotcrete and axial strength of rock bolt, but also carrying out a series of numerical analyses. It was established from the investigation that the 2-dimensional continuum numerical analysis was the one which could more accurately predict displacement of crown and side in the area of one step excavation (patten, P1-P3), while the 2-dimensional discontinuum analysis was the most suitable scheme to study that of two step excavation (patten, P4-P6). In addition, the 2-dimensional continuum analysis enabled to appropriately predict the axial strength of rock bolt and stress of shotcrete in all the area of the tunnel. Finally, it has been possible to conclude from the study that the 3-dimensional continuum analysis should be applied to inspect the behavior and tendency with respect to each stage of the construction as well as in the case of joints, such as large turnouts where relaxation loads in both of horizontal and vertical direction are piled up.
