Effect of the Application of Hand Washing Education Program for the Children with Intellectual Disability on Hand Washing Frequency and Methods during COVID-19 Pandemic (코로나-19 확산 속에서 손 씻기 교육 프로그램 적용이 지적장애 아동들의 손 씻기 빈도와 방법에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of the application of hand washing education program for the children with intellectual disability on hand washing frequency and methods during COVID-19 Pandemic. Subjects were 14 children with intellectual disability and they participated in the program using visual video materials. Hand washing education program was consisted of introduction, theory education, and practice and it performed 2 times a week, total 16 sessions during 8 weeks. Hand washing theory education was consisted about the importance and application of hand washing, proper hand washing steps and methods, use of hand washing tools, use of hand sanitizers including characteristics, and prevention of skin damage from hand washing. Hand washing assessment was used by hand washing frequence and methods observation report. Hand washing frequency was measured by the hand washing frequency during the daily routine and it was analyzed by the items divided into day and month units. Hand washing methods was measured by the items divided into use of hand washing tools, time, areas, drying methods after hand washing. As the results, after hand washing education program, the hand washing frequence was increased and hand washing methods were improved. Hand washing is much important as a active method to prevent the infection during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Thus, based on this findings, the application of hand washing education program should be considered to increase the hand washing frequency and improve the hand washing methods of the children with intellectual disability.

Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) of Hand Washing for soldiers (군인의 손 씻기 지식, 태도 및 실천 조사 - KAP 모형을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the correlations and influence factors of knowledge, attitude, and practice of soldiers on hand washing. This is expected to be basis for hand washing and health education in the army. Total of 420 soldiers were randomly selected and surveyed. The collected data were analyzed using beta regression model through R and SAS program. As a result, there was a statistically significant correlation among knowledge, attitude and practice of hand washing, and the degree of health education was analyzed as having no effect on knowledge, attitude and practice. However, the exposure degree of related health promotional materials had significant effect on them. Therefore, in order to promote the practice of hand washing in the army, continuous exposure of the publicity materials is more effective than the health education. It can be also positively influenced all on knowledge, attitude and practice hand washing.

Knowledge, Attitude, Performance on the Hand Washing by Dental Hygiene Students (치위생과 학생의 손 씻기에 대한 지식, 태도, 수행도)

  • This study was conducted to assess knowledge, attitude, and performance of dental hygiene students on the hand washing. We surveyed 288 students attending the department of dental hygiene at K Universities and H Universities in Gwangju during the period from September 5 to November 20, 2014. The obtained data were analysed using SPSS version 20.0. According to the general characteristics, the hand washing knowledge of the third year students was highest with 4.72. At the question on the change of awareness after the education of hand washing, the hand washing performance showed that 4.17 for 'yes' was higher than 4.03 for 'no'. There was negatively correlated between knowledge and attitude (r=-0.020, p>0.05). The performance was positively correlated with attitude (r=0.161, p<0.05). There is a need to develop a continuous education program for finding out the right way to hand washing, which is able to enhance knowledge, attitude, and performance on hand washing.

A Study On The Awareness And Practice Of Hand Washing According To The Clinical Practice Of Paramedic Students

  • This study is to identify the awareness and performance of hand washing according to the presence of clinical practice experience of paramedic students and provide basic data of education on hand washing that can be practically applied. 335 students in paramedicine department in P city and J city were the study subjects and we distributed URL to those who agreed to participate in the study to carry out untact survey using questionnaire. The study results were analyzed by using SPSS/WIN 23.0. The results showed that the average number of hand washing per day was 5~8 times (142 students, 42.4%) and average time for washing hands was 24.34 seconds. We could find statistically significant differences in 'hand washing to wrist' and 'it is necessary to completely dry after hand washing' in terms of difference on awareness of hand washing according to the clinical experiences (p<0.05). In terms of differences in hand washing performance according to clinical practice experience, statistically significant difference was found in 'before touching equipment for clinical practice' and 'before taking foods such as drinks during practice' (p<0.05). The correlation between awareness and performance of hand washing showed that if awareness of hand washing is high, its performance is increased, too (p=0.001). We try to provide basic data of education on hand washing that can improve awareness and performance on hand washing based on the results of this study.

  • It has been found that the incidence and mortality of COVID-19 are high in patients with underlying chronic diseases. Amid COVID-19 pandemic, tooth brushing is as important as hand washing for health care. The aim of this study was to identify factors related to the rate of tooth brushing and hand washing in hypertensive patients. We analyzed 62,762 hypertensive patients over the age of 40 from the Community Health Survey 2020. The practice rate of hand washing was higher among women, younger age, higher education level, mask wearers when going out, and tooth brushing practitioners after lunch. The hand washing practice rate was higher in hypertensive patients who practiced tooth brushing. In conclusion, there was the relationship between oral hygiene and personal quarantine. It is necessary to prepare sustainable measures to increase the practice rate of infectious disease prevention behaviors for patients with underlying chronic diseases who are susceptible to COVID-19.

Behaviors of hand washing practice Korean adolescents, 2011-2013: The Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (청소년의 손 씻기 실천 행태 분석; 청소년 건강행태 온라인 조사 2011-2013년도를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this assessment was to provide the basic data for setting up education in terms of 'Hand wash' as one of the health plan & education programs for adolescents. The task analyzed the behavior of students regarding hand washing, which were ranged from middle school to high school. The SPSS 18.0 statistical program, frequency-test and cross-analysis were used for data analysis by 2011, 2012 and 2013, which were the recent 3 years, the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey data. In the data, the response of "Never washed" from students before having a meal accounted for 29.4% in 2011, 30.5% in 2012 and 18.5% in 2013, respectively. Unlike other subjects, these facts suggest that this kind of behavior should be considered significant under the assessment. By tracking the trend over three years, some facts were confirmed in that students living in the metropolitan and medium-sized cities were less likely to wash their hands than students in small- sized towns. In terms of gender, female students were less likely to wash their hands than male students. Regarding the type of school, more students in the public middle & high schools had a tendency to respond "Never hand wash" than the students in the special-purpose high schools. Furthermore, as the grade was increased in middle school and high school, students were less likely to wash their hands before meals in school. Therefore, Health promotion and health education for students should be conducted more carefully with more emphasis on this point.

  • Recently, hand washing has been emphasized as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS) threatened public health. This study aimed to prevent MERS by hand washing frequency and analyzed the relationship between hand washing behavior and trait anxiety, locus of control and health promotion behavior. In this study, 314 nursing students participated in a survey where they could indicate what they did and the frequency of hand washing for preventing MERS. They also responded to questions related to the trait anxiety, locus of control, and health promotion behavior. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression. The frequency of hand washing was highest among the measures that the participants used and it was significantly related to the participants who reported high scores for the importance of hand washing. In addition, the importance of hand washing was impacted by the internal locus of control. Most nursing students who participated the survey acknowledged that hand washing was the most important method for preventing MERS. Therefore, it is important to educate people on the importance of hand washing and pay attention to personal characteristics, such as internal locus of control to promote hand-washing.

A study on the awareness and practice of hand washing according to the clinical practice experience of physical therapy students (물리치료 전공 대학생의 임상실습 경험에 따른 손 씻기의 인식도와 실천도에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data on hand washing of physical therapists by examining their awareness and practice of hand washing according to proper clinical practice. A total of 536 questionnaires were collected from physical therapy students in Gwangju metropolitan city. The general characteristics of the subjects were calculated by frequency analysis, and the awareness and practice of hand washing with and without clinical practice were analyzed by independent t-tests. As a result of analyzing hand washing awareness according to the clinical practice, there was a significant difference in hand washing up to the wrist (p<0.05), and a significant difference in 6 stages of proper hand washing (p<0.01). As a result of analyzing hand washing practice according to clinical practice, there was a significant difference in hand washing before eating and starting clinical practice (p<0.05), a significant difference in washing hands after contacting clinical practice equipment and washing your fingers from your thumb down (p<0.01). As a result of analyzing the correlation between awareness and practice, most showed positive correlation. This means it is important to raise the awareness of proper washing hands. Therefore, it is believed that the training school should repeatedly conduct its own hand washing training within the school and in clinical practice to increase awareness and improve handwashing in clinical practice.

Studies on the Hand Hygiene Practices of Food-Service Workers: A Comparison of Fast Food Restaurant Workers and Full-service Restaurant Workers (조리종사자의 손 위생관리에 관한 연구 - 패스트푸드점 및 일반음식점 종사자의 비교 -)

  • This study was performed to investigate hygienic behavior of food workers on the awareness of hand-washing, and the microbial load of their hands. This study focused on the comparison of fast food restaurant workers and full-service restaurant workers. A questionnaire survey and microbiological analysis were carried out for thirty fast food restaurant workers and forty full-service restaurant workers. Samples for microbiological analysis were collected through the glove-juice method from the hands of the food workers, and were analyzed for the presence of aerobic plate counts, total coliforms, fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella spp. Microbiological analysis was done according to the Food Code of Korea. In the survey, significant differences (p < 0.05) were found between the fast food restaurant workers and full-service restaurant workers in the use of hand washing tools and method of turning off water. More full-service restaurant workers responded to wash their hands after touching face, hair, or clothes; after handling raw food materials, and more fast food restaurant workers periodically (p < 0.05). Aerobic plate counts were higher in fast food restaurant workers while total coliforms were higher in full-service restaurant workers (p < 0.05). No remarkable difference was found between the two groups in the load of fecal coliforms, E. coli, S. aureus, and Salmonella spp. Poor hand hygiene practices were indicated by the positive results for E. coli, S. aureus, and Salmonella spp. on the hands of some food workers in both groups. The findings of this study emphasize the need for strict adherence to hand hygiene compliance among the food workers.

Prevalence of Microbiological Hazard on Nursery School Children's Hands and Effect of Hand Washing Education (어린이집 유아 손의 미생물학적 위해 평가 및 손 씻기 교육의 효과)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the microbiological hazard on nursery school children's hands and to investigate the reduction effect of hand washing education. A total of 59 nursery school children's hands were tested. The average number of total aerobic bacteria was $3.72{\pm}0.38log\;CFU/hand$. Five children's hands(2 male and 3 female) were positive(14.3%) for the coliform bacteria. These results showed that hand washing education are required repetitively. Among the pathogenic bacteria tested in this study, $Staphylococcus$ aureus and $Bacillus$ $cereus$ were detected in 9(25.7%) and 16(45.7%) out of 35 their hands, respectively. Twelve out of sixteen $B.$ $cereus$ isolates(70.0%) produced enterotoxin. The results indicate that the hand hygiene of nursery school children needs to be improved. Comparing before and after hand washing in educated and non-educated group, the reduction effect of total aerobic bacteria on their hands was 0.42 and 0.60 log CFU/hand, respectively. The educated group showed 0.18 log CFU/hand higher reduction effect than non-educated group but microorganism did not eliminate perfectly. From the results, using a hand sanitizer after washing with soap and the continuous hand washing education are required to control the contaminated bacteria on nursery school children's hands.
