The Evaluation of Effectiveness of Belt-type Hand Sanitizers in Clinical Nurses: Focusing on the performance of hand disinfection and the satisfaction (벨트형 손소독제 활용의 효과 평가: 임상간호사의 손소독 수행 정도와 만족도를 중심으로)

  • The aims of this study was to examine the effect on the hand disinfection performance, the performance rate, and the satisfaction with the use of the belt-type hand sanitizers in clinical nurses. The study is a one group pre-post test quasi-experimental design. Effectiveness of using the belt-type hand sanitizers was measured with a self-reporting questionnaire. As a result, the performance of hand disinfection and the performance rate were significantly higher after using the belt-type hand sanitizers, and also, the satisfaction with the use of the belt-type hand sanitizers was significantly high. The belt-type hand sanitizer is effective method to improve both hand disinfection performance and its performance rate. Therefore, if the belt-type hand sanitizer is used in clinical practice, it may contribute to the improving the hand disinfection performance and its performance rate.

  • Fungi are a major cause of cultural and biological degradation in museum storages and archives libraries. In addition, fungi produce toxins and can cause skin allergies. In particular, fungi coming into contact with the skin through the hands of administrators dealing with cultural properties, archives, and books can lead to secondary infections. To prevent this, applying hand sanitizer, which is readily available in the market, is recommended. However, such hand sanitizer can effectively disinfect against bacteria but not fungi. As such, researching for an alternative is required. In this study, we developed a hand sanitizer composed of active ingredients - geranial, cineol, menthol, and Chamaecyparis obtusa - and performed a disinfection test, which targets 10 kinds of species (Alternaria citrimacularis, Alternaria consortialis, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus versicolor, Cladosporium sphaerospermum, Coniothyrium aleurites, Penicillium brevicompactum, Penicillium corylophilum, Penicillium paneum, and Penicillium polonicum), of fungi investigated in museums and libraries. It was then confirmed to exhibit excellent disinfecting effects. Thus, this hand sanitizer is expected to prevent skin diseases and secondary infections in administrators dealing with cultural properties, archives, and books.

  • 본 연구에서는 사물인터넷을 기반으로 하나의 방역 장치에서 '온도 측정, 손소독'이 가능한 코로나 방역 장치를 구현한다. 라즈베리파이 기반에 센서들을 활용한 하드웨어 시스템에서는 체온 측정 후 손소독이 가능하며 어플리케이션에서는 실시간으로 사용자의 체온측정 결과와 하드웨어의 손소독제 잔량 확인이 가능하다. 본 논문에서는 UML(Unified Modeling Language)을 활용한 여러 다이어그램 기반의 설계 부분과 열 감지 센서를 활용한 하드웨어 시스템 및 어플리케이션의 UI를 볼 수 있다.

Comparison of Bacterial Removal Effectiveness by Different Hand Washing Methods (손세정 방법에 따른 세균 제거 효과 비교에 대한 융복합 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the efficiency of bacteria removal of three different types of hand washing methods. This study performed a convenient sampling of 30 volunteers in cross-over design. The study divided the 30 volunteers into three random groups. The three groups were asked to use antiseptic soap, alcohol-based hand disinfectant, and disposable wet wipes respectively. The result of the study showed that mean log reduction values after each had washing method were $-0.45({\pm}0.69)$ with antiseptic soap and water, $-1.19({\pm}0.52)$ with alcohol-based hand disinfectant and $-0.75({\pm}0.58)$ with disposable wet wipes. The difference was statistically significant when using alcohol-based hand disinfectant compared to the other two methods (p=0.000). According to this study, alcohol-based hand disinfectant was the most effective product based on bacteria removal for hand washing. Advantages of using alcohol-based hand disinfectant are that it is cost-effective and easy to buy, also eco-friendly. Therefore, to prevent infectious disease, providing alcohol-based hand disinfectant to every corner of the community will be very helpful.

Comparison of Surgical Hand Scrub Formulations and Scrub Methods for Antimicrobial Efficacy (손 소독제 및 소독방법에 따른 외과적 손 소독 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare three surgical scrub methods-4% chlorhexidine gluconate(CHG) with brush, 4% CHG without brush, and waterless scrub using 1% CHG and 61% ethanol combination(alcohol-based agent)-for antimicrobial efficacy. Method: "Glove-juice technique" was used to evaluate microbial hand counts before surgical scrubs, 1 min and 3 hr after surgical scrubs. Result: Waterless scrub using CHG and ethanol combination resulted in a 4.8-log reduction at 1 min and 4.0-log reduction at 3 hr. CHG without brush resulted in a 4.7-log reduction at 1 min and 3.3-log reduction at 3 hr. The traditional scrub using CHG with brush resulted in a 3.6-log reduction at 1 min and 0.8-log reduction at 3 hr. The waterless scrub and CHG without brush showed significantly higher log reduction(p<.05) than CHG with brush at 1 min and 3 hr after surgical scrub. Waterless scrub showed greater log reductions than CHG without brush, but there was no statistical difference between the two groups. Conclusion: Waterless scrub using alcohol-based agent showed more persistent and immediate antimicrobial efficacy than either CHG with brush or CHG without brush.

  • 가축 재입식이 시 군의 점검결과에 따라 30일 이후에 입식이 가능해지면서 농가의 손이 바빠질 것으로 보인다. 이번에 수정된 재입식 절차는 가축방역관의 지적상항을 보완하고 문제점이 해결되어야만 재입식이 가능하다. 본고에서는 FMD 매몰 농장 재입식 절차와 청소 소독 요령에 대해 언급하도록 한다.

  • It is going to select one X-ray generating device for diagnosis in a radiography laboratory at K university in Gangwon-do to detect bacteria on the surface contamination of tables, IP cassettes, and lead gowns for medical radiation shielding and to inform students of the need for proper disinfection control and hand hygiene. Then disinfection was carried out with tissue, tissue cleaner and 70% alchol and immediately collected with sterile cotton swabs to assess the contamination distribution status and disinfection effects of the surface. The results of measuring the degree of contamination on the surface showed that the largest number of bacteria were detected in Apron, and the evaluation of the disinfection effects according to surface contamination showed a noticeable effect at 70% Alcohol in IP Cassette, and the disinfection effect was the same for Apron. Therefore, in order to prevent bacterial infections among students, basic hand washing and regular disinfection should be performed before the practice to prevent infection.

Improvement of the Efficacy Test Methods for Hand Sanitizers (Gel, Liquid, and Wipes): Emerging Trends from in vivo/ex vivo Test Strategies for Application in the Hand Microbiome (손소독제(겔형, 액제형, 와이프형)의 효능 평가법 개선: 평가 전략 연구 사례 및 손 균총 정보 활용 등 최근 동향)

  • Skin sanitizers are effective in killing or removing pathogenic microbial contaminants from the skin of food handlers, and the progressive growth of consumer interest in personal hygiene tends to drive product diversification. This review covers the advances in the application of efficacy tests for hand sanitizers to suggest future perspectives to establish an assessment system that is optimized to each product type (gel, liquid, and wipes). Previous research on the in vivo simulative test of actual consumer use has adopted diverse experimental conditions regardless of the product type. This highlights the importance of establishing optimal test protocols specialized for the compositional characteristics of sanitizers through the comparative analysis of test methods. Although the operational conditions of the mechanical actions associated with wiping can affect the efficacy of the removal and/or the inactivation of target microorganisms from the skin's surface, currently there is a lack of standardized use patterns for the exposure of hand sanitizing wipes to skin. Thus, major determinants affecting the results from each step of the overall assessment procedures [pre-treatment - exposure of sanitizers - microbial recovery] should be identified to modify current protocols and develop novel test methods. The ex vivo test, designed to overcome the limited reproducibility of in vivo human trials, is also expected to replicate the environment for the contact of sanitizers targeting skin microorganisms. Recent progress in the area of skin microbiome research revealed distinct microbial characteristics and distribution patterns after the application of sanitizers on hands to establish the test methods with the perspectives on the antimicrobial effects at the community level. The future perspectives presented in this study on the improvement of efficacy test methods for hand sanitizers can also contribute to public health and food safety through the commercialization of effective sanitizer products.
