  • The objective of this paper is to present an algorithm to locate and size damage in a beam structure. The method uses the changes in the modal strain energy distribution. A damage index, utilized to identify possible location and corresponding severity of local damage, is formulated and expressed in terms of modal displacements that can be obtained from mode shapes of the undamaged and the damaged structures. The possible damage locations in the structure arc determined by the application of damage indicator according to previously developed decision rules. The robustness and effectiveness of the method arc demonstrated using numerical examples of beam structures with simulated damage.

  • Acoustic emission (AE) is one of the most powerful techniques for detecting damages and identify damage location during operations. However, in case of the source location technique, there is some limitation in conventional AE technology, because it strongly depends on wave speed in the corresponding structures having heterogeneous composite materials. A compressed natural gas(CNG) pressure vessel is usually made of carbon fiber composite outside of vessel for the purpose of strengthening. In this type of composite material, locating impact damage sources exactly using conventional time arrival method is difficult. To overcome this limitation, this study applied the previously developed Contour D/B map technique to four types of CNG storage tanks to identify the source location of damages caused by external shock. The results of the identification of the source location for different types were compared.

  • In this paper, the feasibility of using Shannon's sampling theorem to reconstruct exact mode shapes of a structural system from a limited number of sensor points and localizing damage in that structure with reconstructed mode shapes is investigated. Shannon's sampling theorem for the time domain is reviewed. The theorem is then extended to the spatial domain. To verify the usefulness of extended theorem, mode shapes of a simple beam are reconstructed from a limited amount of data and the reconstructed mode shapes are compared to the exact mode shapes. On the basis of the results, a simple rule is proposed for the optimal placement of accelerometers in modal parameter extraction experiments. Practicality of the proposed rule and the extended Shannon's theorem is demonstrated by detecting damage in laboratory beam structure with two-span via applying to mode shapes of pre and post damage states.

  • Low-velocity impact damage in a composite stiffened panel was detected using built-in piezoelectric active sensor arrays. Using these piezoelectric active sensors, various diagnostic signals were generated to propagate Lamb waves through the structure and the responses were picked up to detect changes in the structure's vibration signature due to the damage. Three algorithms - ADI(Active Damage Interrogation), TD RMS (Time Domain Root Mean Square) and STFT (Short Time Fourier Transform) - were examined to express the features of the signal changes as one damage index. From damage detecting tests, two impact induced delaminations were detected and the location was estimated with the algorithms and diagnostic signals.

  • Delamination damage at a bolt hole in a composite stiffened panel was detected using a built-in piezoelectric active sensor array. Various signal processing techniques were used to detect an invisible small scale delamination around a fastener hole due to localized transverse loading. A built-in piezoelectric sensor array was used to generate diagnostic signals and to measure response signals. Then, the response signals were processed to extract damage-sensitive features. Damage indexes were calculated to estimate the severity and location of the damage from the features.

  • In this paper, damage detection procedure using the finite element model updating was formulated and applied to a small-scale frame structure. FE model updating is the analytical method which finds the mathematical model that generates the measured dynamic properties similarly, and can be effectively used for the damage detection and SHM. For model updating, several kinds of dynamic properties, such as the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and frequency response functions, can be used as the inputs. In this paper, two kinds of model updating procedures using the natrual frequency and the frequency response function, and the natrual frequency and the mode shapes, respectively, were applied to identify the location and the severity of damage of the test structure, which is a four-story two bay steel structure. Results from the damage detection showed that more accurate identification results was obtained when the natrual frequency and the frequency response function were used than when the natrual frequency and the mode shapes were used.

  • In the present study, the inverse perturbation method is applied to the structural damage detection in conjunction with a system condensation technique. The system condensation technique is adopted to r esolve the problem due to the incomplete measurement of the degrees-of-freedom (DOFs) in a natural mode. However, the numerical difficulty may arise in the system condensation when the DOFs to be measured are not properly selected. Thus, the issue of sensor placement for structural damage detection, in the framework of the condensation technique-based inverse perturbation method, is considered in this study. Also, a methodology to measure the number of sensors required to obtain reliable damage detection is proposed and then verified through some illustrative example problem.
