A new damage detection technique using static displacement data was developed, in order to assess the structural integrity of bridge structures. In conventional damage assessment techniques using dynamic response, the variation of natural frequencies is intrinsically insensitive to the damage of the bridge: thus, it is usually difficult to obtain them from the measured data. The proposed detection method enables the estimation of the stiffness reduction of bridges using the static displacement data that are measured periodically, without requiring a specific loading test. Devices such as a laser displacement sensor can be used to measure static displacement data due to the dead load of the bridge structure. In this study, structural damage was represented by the reduction in the elastic modulus of the element. The damage factor of the element was introduced to estimate the stiffness reduction of the bridge under consideration. Likewise, the proposed algorithm was verified using various numerical simulations and compared with other damage detection methods. The effects of noise and number of damaged elements on damage detection were also investigated. Results showed that the proposed algorithm efficiently detects damage on the bridge.

Structural damage is used to be modeled through reductions in the stiffness of structural elements for the purpose of damage estimation of structural system. In this study, the concept of joint damage is employed for more realistic damage assessment of a steel structure. The joint damage is estimated damage based on the mode shape informations using neural networks, The beam-to-column connection in a steel frame structure is represented by a rotational spring at the fixed end of a beam element. The severity of joint damage is defined as the reduction ratio of the connection stiffness with respect to the value of the intact joint. The concept of the substructural identification is used for the localized damage assessment in a large structure. The feasibility of the proposed method is examined using an example with simulated data. It has been found that the joint damages can be reasonably estimated for the case with the measurements of the mode vectors subjected to noise.

A method for the damage assessment of a structure by an inverse modal perturbation technique is studied. The first few natural frequencies and mode shapes of the damaged structure are assumed to be known. Then, the perturbation equation is formulated for the changes of the modal properties due to the stiffness changes. The stiffness changes due to damages are evaluated, using optimization techniques. Example analyses are carried out for several cases of stick models and a truss model. Results indicate that the present method yields very reasonable estimates for the element stiffness changes.
Damage detection methods using structural tests can be divided into two methods, i.e., static and dynamic. The static methods which use the stiffness properties of the structure are simpler than the dynamic methods. However, static approaches are very sensitive to the displacement measurement noises and modeling errors. The dynamic methods also have limitations in acquiring the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the high frequencies. In this study, a method for the structural damage assessment using sensitivity matrices is developed, in which the drawbacks of the static and dynamic methods can be compensated. Based on the measurement data for the static displacements and dynamic modal properties, the damage locations and the degree of damage are determined using the presented sensitivity matrix method. The efficiency of the proposed method has been examined through numerical simulation studies on truss type structures.

A damage identification technique using static displacement data is developed to asses s the structural integrity of bridge structures. As such, the relationship between static displacement and stiffness is derived, and the optimization technique utilized.Comparisons with numerical and experimental tests are performed to investigate the practical applicability of the proposed method.Various damage scenarios are considered by varying damage-width as well as damage-degree. The influence of noise in identifying the damage is also numerically investigated. Finally, the applicability and limitation of the proposed method are discussed.
Most civil engineering structures such as bridges, power plants, and offshore platforms are apt to suffer structural damages over their service lives caused by adverse loadings, such as earthquakes, wind and wave forces. Accumulation of structural damages over a long period of time might cause catastrophic structural failure. Therefore, a methodology for monitoring the structural integrity is essential for assuring the safety of the existing structures. A method for the damage assessment of structures by the second order inverse modal perturbation technique is presented in this paper. Perturbation equation consists of a matrix equation involving matrices of structural changes(stiffness and mass matrix changes) and matrices of modal property changes(natural frequency and mode shape changes). The damages of a structure are represented as changes in the stiffness matrix. In this study, a second order perturbation equation is formulated for the damage assessment of structures, and solved by an iterative procedure. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been investigated through a series of example analysis. The estimated results for the structural damage indicated that the present method yields resonable estimates for the structural changes.

A method to estimate damage of bridge structures is developed using system identification approach. Dynamic behavior of damaged structures is represented by a non-linear hysteretic moment model. Structural properties can be evaluated through system identification. To incorporate variability of the structural properties and uncertainties of structural response, damage is represented as random quantities. Numerical example is shown for the bridge structure under different ground excitation.

The objective of this paper is to present an algorithm to locate and size damage in a beam structure. The method uses the changes in the modal strain energy distribution. A damage index, utilized to identify possible location and corresponding severity of local damage, is formulated and expressed in terms of modal displacements that can be obtained from mode shapes of the undamaged and the damaged structures. The possible damage locations in the structure arc determined by the application of damage indicator according to previously developed decision rules. The robustness and effectiveness of the method arc demonstrated using numerical examples of beam structures with simulated damage.
