  • Damaged structures change the value of natural properties. The purpose of this study is to detect damage using the difference of natural properties between the healthy state and the damaged state. Anti-optimization method is used to find the conditions that maximize the difference in characteristics between the two contrasting models. In this paper, a algorithm for finding the loading conditions which can maximize the difference of strain energy between the healthy state and the damaged state of truss structures is developed. Numerical examples show that the proposed method is accurate and efficient for truss structures.

  • The assessment of structural condition is a crucial process for evaluating its usability and determining the diagnostic cycle. The currently employed manpower-based methods suffer from issues related to safety, efficiency, and objectivity. To address these concerns, research based on deep learning using images is being conducted. However, acquiring structural damage data is challenging, making it difficult to construct a substantial amount of training data, thus limiting the effectiveness of deep learning-based condition assessment. In this study, we propose a foundation model-based 2-step structural damage analysis to overcome the lack of training data in image-based structural condition assessments. We subdivided the elements of structural condition assessment into instantiation and quantification. In the quantification step, we applied a foundation model for image segmentation. Our method demonstrated a 10%-point increase in mean intersection over union compared to conventional image segmentation techniques, with a notable 40%-point improvement in the case of rebar exposure. We anticipate that our proposed approach will enhance performance in domains where acquiring training data is challenging.

  • The integrity of components and piping of operating nuclear power plants has been identified by in-service inspection(ISI) requirements and activities commensurate with standards and codes such as KEPIC MI or ASME Code Section XI. However, the other various degradation mechanisms not considered during design stage of nuclear power plants have been checked by enhanced ISI. The requirements of enhanced ISI have been voluntarily developed by the industry itself or strickly issued by regulatory body. Even though the requirements were developed by the industry, they should be reviewed by regulatory body for their application in nuclear power plants. The enhanced ISI activities and requirements of non-destructive examination(NDE) which reflect the degradation issues in nuclear power industry will be primarily discussed in this paper.

  • A vibration-based monitoring system is newly proposed to predict the loss of prestress forces in prestressed concrete (PSC) girder bridges. Firstly, a global damage alarming algorithm is newly proposed to monitor the occurrence of prestress-loss by using the change in frequency responses. Secondly, a prestress-loss prediction algorithm is selected to estimate the extent of prestress-loss by using the change in natural frequencies. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed system is experimentally evaluated on a scaled PSC girder model for which acceleration responses were measured for several damage scenarios of prestress-loss.

  • Purpose To evaluate the various factors that affect renal function following percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) therapy in patients with renal tumors. Materials and Methods Between 2010 and 2018, 91 patients diagnosed with renal tumors using ultrasonography and CT-guided RFA were enrolled. We retrospectively investigated the serum creatinine (SCr) level and estimated glomerular filtration rates immediately prior to RFA and during post-treatment follow-up. The patients were divided into two groups based on the degree of change in SCr level (0.3 mg/dL). Group comparisons were performed using univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses to determine the factors impacting renal function. Results Impaired renal function was associated with solitary kidney, chronic kidney disease (CKD) over stage 3, and pyeloureteral injury. Sex, age, other cancers, tumor size, location, growth pattern, and proximity to the collecting system were not significantly associated with impaired renal function. There was a difference in the overall change over time between the association with and without solitary kidney, CKD stage 3, and pyeloureteral injury. Conclusion Among the medical conditions present prior to RFA, solitary kidney and CKD over stage 3 could be considered as risk factors for impaired renal function. Post-procedural pyeloureteral injury can also be considered a risk factor.

  • Neural representation of a visual object is distributed across visual cortex and overlapped with those of many other objects. Thus repeating an object facilitates the recognition of the object while it impairs the recognition of other objects. These effects are called repetition priming and antipriming, respectively. Two experiments investigated a new phenomenon of repetition antipriming, in which a repeated object itself is antiprimed. The learning stage presented object pictures which were degraded at various levels. Participants determined how recognizable each object was. Then, the test stage presented the intact version of the object pictures and made participants to perform a categorization task. Both Experiment 1 and 2 found that the processing of the objects that had been recognized were facilitated (repetition priming) while the processing of the objects that had been perceptually ambiguous were impaired (repetition antipriming). These findings suggest that experiencing a perceptually ambiguous object might enhance the connection between feature-level representations and multiple object-level representations, which impairs the subsequent recognition of the repeated object.

  • The purpose of this study is to characterize damage propagation in granite which exists in South Korea. Coarse, medium and fine-grained granite specimens were sampled respectively In order to perform this study, elastic wave velocity test and permeability test were carried out to estimate the physical specificities of specimens before and after damage. Cellulose acetate film duplication method was used to select only cracks from cross section and to make these visible. Using dark-field illumination, approach photographing technique was used to get more distinct photographs of cracks from acetate peel. Computer programs named Photoshop were used to describe cracks. After damage, coarse and medium-grained granite had lower elastic wane velocity, higher permeability, more cracks and more distinct shear fractures than fine-grained granite.

  • In performing a risk analysis on structure for earthquake, it is imperative to identify the vulnerability of structures associated with various stages of damage. And the earthquake resisting capability is needed for structures like bridge. So the damage analysis of bridges with or without isolator for earthquake effects is necessary. In this paper, the risk analysis of seismic isolated LRB bridges considering earthquake effects such as PGA, PGV, SA, SV, and SI is performed using fragility curves to assure the earthquake resisting capability of the structures. And, the stability of fragility curve is investigated with respect to input earthquake.
