  • A side mirror is an important safety tool with which the driver can observe objects out of sight. This paper presents an organized design technology for the side mirror of improved vibration characteristics. Resonance response to forced vibration is critical to observability through the mirror to be designed. This study aims at the reduction of vibration level by the modification of mirror structures and consequent effects are predicted by computer simulations. We used a three-dimensional solid modeling and the modal and frequency analysis ; Pro/Engineer is used as a solid modeler; Pro/Mechanica for vibration analysis. The simulation results are compared with those obtained in experiemnts to check the validity by the three-dimensional modeling. The design technique of side mirror has been established and found to be effective in vibration analysis of redesigned parts.

  • This paper addresses a method for evaluating perceived velocities of the graphic module in a driving simulator. The major two graphic factors associated with perceived velocities are analyzed: they are the lateral distance between a virtual driver and an array of environmental objects and the textural density of these objects. A graphical representation of a vehicle and its surrounding environment are constructed by employing a three-dimensional tool, Pro/ENGINEER and a virtual environment, dVISE. Using the developed virtual driving environment, experiments have been carried out to formulate the relationship between velocity perception and each factor. Based on the experimental results, nonlinear regression equations are derived to show how the perceived velocities are dependent upon distance/density.

  • We tested the ability of two-dimensional echocardiograms of complete heart cycle in closed-chest human to discriminate between normal and infarcted myocardium using fixed window, Inter- and Intra-frame analysis. The results show that statistical parameter, MEAN, second order gray level statistics parameter, ASM and proposed parameter, HGE, I.T, can quantitatively distinguish between normal and Infarcted regions. The manner in which these parameters vary over the cardiac cycle is also a good indicator of the state of myocardium. The infarcted areas yield regions of higher Intensity throughout the cardiac cycle. Whereas, normal tissue demonstrates greater variability throughout the cardiac cycle.

  • The role of a robot becomes more important as factory automation is widely spread in the manufacturing industry. An off-line program system has been required for uninterruption of production lines because it can save cost and time spent in adjusting a robot to a new workcell. The objective of this paper is to develop our own OLP system for a SCARA type FARA robot with four axes. Three-dimensional graphic results are presented for the case when the robot is simulated using the computed torque method with a PD controller and the continuous path trajectory planning.

  • An off-line programming, OLP, system is widely used in automation fines. To help an on-line robot system to carry out desirable tasks planned by the off-line simulation, an approach to the real-time communication is presented. The OLP system developed consists of a software, a host computer(PC), a SCARA robot body, four servo drivers, and four independent joint controllers. This study focuses on the software where real-time communication is included. The software, can be used in teaching, trajectory planning, real-time running, and performance evaluation. The evaluation of different control algorithms is one of the merits of the software. The software can give servo commands for task running. A comparison of generated and corresponding actual trajectories provides the evaluation of task performance. The safety, of the OLP system is ensured by alarming malfuntions of the system. The OLP system developed can reduce the teaching time and increase the user's convenience.

  • Three dimensional joint motion data were obtained using precise magnetic sensors and X-ray. Six metal markers were inserted on the femur and the tibia to set the coordinate system. Two magnetic position sensors were used to record motion data and these positions were transformed into the knee motion. The quadriceps muscle was extended in an automatic manner by an extraction machine. Results of the knee motion were the same as the clinical data. The proposed method is found to be reasonable in describing the knee motion so that these motion data can be used to simulate the normal knee joint.

  • Vertices terminating at free surface have been investigated extensively. Most of investigations, however, are focused on surface parallel vortices and little has been known about surface normal vortex or columnar vortex. Visualized experimental results utilizing LIF technique are discussed fur the purpose of characterization of columnar vortex interacting with a clean and a contaminated free surfaces and a solid body interface in the present investigation. The results reveal that surface tension changes due to surface contamination although bulk viscosity remains constant and eventually the behavior of a columnar vortex interacting with a contaminated free surface and a solid body interface are totally different from the clean free surface case.

  • Severe osteoarthrosis of the knee joint often requires total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to yield adequate knee function. The knee joint with TKA is expected ideally to restore the characteristics, however, this is not necessarily true in the clinical cases. In this study the motions of the intact joint and the joint after TKA were investigated numerically using computer simulation. For active knee extension from 90 degrees of flexion to full extension, the intact knee joint exhibited anterior tibial translation near the full extension while it showed only rotation for other flexion angles. Physiologic external rotation of the tibia near full extension was also noted in the analytical model. The analysis of the tibial insert of three different shapes (flat, semicurved, and curved types) demonstrated characteristic rotational and sliding motions as well as different contact forces.

  • This study predicts muscle forces acting on the lower extremity when the knee joint is in deep flexion. The whole bodies were approximated as a link model, and then the moment equilibrium equations at the lower extremity joints were derived for given reaction forces against the ground. Measurement of deep flexion was carried out by placing ten markers on the body. This study calculated the moment acting at each joint from the equations of force and moment, classified the complicated muscles around the knee joint. and then predicted the muscle forces to balance the joint moment. Two models were proposed in this study: the simpler one that consists of three groups of muscle and the more detailed one of nine groups of muscle.
