  • With the development of information and communication technology, the unmanned aerial vehicle industry began to attract attention as a new growth industry as it entered the fourth industrial revolution. As the size of the unmanned aerial vehicles and the scope of airspace vary from small drones to large unmanned aerial vehicles, the developed countries such as USA and Europe are developing plans for the integrated operation of manned and unmanned aerial vehicles. ICAO is also working on amendments to the relevant ICAO annexes to establish international standards and recommendations for unmanned aerial vehicles. Korea also needs to prepare for the integrated operation of manned and unmanned aerial vehicles that will come in the future, and for this purpose, it is necessary to review and revise the national regulation systems for the safe operation of unmanned aerial vehicles. This study analyzes the amendments of related annexes discussed on the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) pannel, and suggests the direction of revision of the Aviation Safety Act for the safe operation of unmanned aerial vehicles in comparison with the existing Aviation Safety Act.

  • This paper investigates using small UAVs as communications relay nodes for expanding communications links and improving communications quality, primarily for a fleet of ground or navy vessels. An airborne relay in ground/maritime space can effectively connect to units operating over the horizon, beyond normal communication range, or under limited satellite communication environment. Even if the equipment development is mature for communications relay, where to locate UAVs for efficient relay is still a pending question. With this background, this paper will develop high-level deployment algorithms to optimize the location of UAVs for improving the connectivity of a wireless network among a fleet of ground or navy vessels.

  • The current-generation avionics systems are based on a federated architecture, where an electronic device runs a single software module or application that collaborates with other devices through a network. This architecture makes the internal system architecture very complicate, and gives rise to issues of Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP). In this paper, we show that the partitioning defined by ARINC 653 can efficiently deal with the SWaP issues on small unmanned aerial vehicles, where the SWaP issues are extremely severe. We especially install the integrated mission system on real hexacopter and quadcopter and perform successful flight tests. The presented software technology for integrated mission system and software consolidation methodology can provide a valuable reference for other SWaP sensitive real-time systems.

  • Although there are differences in the classification of category adopted by each country, small UAS is usually classified as the one less than 25 kg. UAS has been mainly used for military and public purposes, but in recent years, it has spread to the private sector for hobby, media, and so on. Especially, considering the nature of the operating region and applications, it is necessary to improve operating time, noise and vibration in small UAS to ensure the same level of safety with a manned aircraft. This is because the drone can pose health and safety hazard through collision with manned aircraft or crashing into the ground. In this paper, we investigated operational regulations in the United States and European countries. Based on the investigation, a domestic system development plan for small UAS operation is under development.

  • In this paper, we survey the Moving Target Indication(MTI) techniques for small UAVs. MTI consists of image alignment phase and frame differencing correction phase, and image alignment has two ways of parametric approach which is mainly focused in this paper and non-parametric approach. Since small UAVs are operated in the low altitude, the parallax is considerable and the epipolar geometry is applied to compensate the parallax. The related works and future works are presented.

  • As the price of small UAVs is getting cheaper and its controllability is getting greatly increased, many aerial applications using both fixed-wing and hoverable UAVs have appeared in recent years. In this paper, a new aerial advertising method is proposed using four hoverable UAVs. Using the UAV swarm control method, four UAVs are maneuvered to carry a $7.07{\times}7.07m^2$ square banner along collision-free and predefined waypoints for aerial advertising. According to simulation results, it takes about 270 s for UAVs to perform aerial advertising in $669{\times}669m^2$ size area and the minimum distance among UAVs turns out to be 0.45 m which proves there is no any collision. Due to abrupt direction changes of UAVs along the predefined waypoints, UAVs cannot always maintain exact square formation and it results the maximum and minimum side lengths of square formation to be 10.35 m and 1.96 m, respectively. Also, the maximum and minimum diagonal lengths of square formation turn out to be 14.75 m and 2.78 m, respectively.

  • Development of Small UAV using HILS (Hardware In the Loop Simulation) can be effectively used to improve the reliability of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) while reducing cost and time. It is also possible to reduce the damage to people or property by simulating the malfunction of the Flight Control Computer (FCC) that may occur during the actual flight. For applying such HILS, a real-time simulation environment capable of providing an environment similar to an actual flight condition is required. In this paper, we constructed a real - time HILS environment for Small UAV using 6 D.O.F motion table. In order to link the 6 D.O.F motion table developed in the previous research with the HILS environment in real time, the motion algorithm was changed from the position control method to the velocity control method. Also, we implemented modeling of inverse kinematics model for command transmission in Matlab $Simulink^{(R)}$ and verified the action of motion table according to the simulation model.

  • This paper described development of the portable ground control system(PGCS) for unmanned aerial vehicle. In the design of GCS, it upload mission planning that aircraft has to perform and has to receive position, attitude, state, navigation information all about the aircraft. Aircraft states and trajectory are displayed using this system on line. The PGCS is composed of commercial notebook computer, RF modem for communication between aircraft and PGCS, input/output board, remote control receiver, switches and lamps. Performance of this system is verified by flight test of small unmanned aerial vehicle.

  • The efficiency and effectiveness of mission performance can be greatly changed according to the operating conditions such as the number of manned aircraft, flight altitude, and so on, in performing search and reconnaissance missions using a large number of small reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles. However, it is not easy to determine which operating conditions are most reasonable. Therefore, in this study, we developed an unmanned airplane flight simulation that can detect and identify the target while avoiding collision according to autonomous flight, suggesting a way to derive operating conditions when operating a large number of unmanned aerial vehicles.
