  • In this paper, an embedded program of a flight control system for a small high performance UAV is introduced. The program consists of modules for device management and guidance and control. The device management system handles navigation sensors and mission equipments. The program for the guidance and control system is used to accomplish various kinds of missions and realize automation of flight control. Driver programs embedded in the device management system for operation of sensors and external devices are based on Texas Instrument's DSP/BIOS RTOS(realtime operating system). The on-board programs for the guidance and control system is obtained by using the model-based auto code generation technology.

  • The use of small drone platform has become a popular topic in these days but its application for SAR operation has been little known due to the burden of the payload implementation. Drone platforms are distinguished from the conventional UAV system by the increased vulnerability to the turbulences, control-errors and poor motion stability. Consequently, sophisticated motion compensation may be required to guarantee the successful acquisition of high quality SAR imagery. Extremely limited power and mass budgets may prevent the use of additional hardwares for motion compensation and the difficulty of SAR focusing is further aggravated. In this paper, we have carried out a feasibility study of mico-SAR drone operation. We present the image acquisition results from the preliminary flight tests and a quality assessment is followed on the experimental SAR images. The in-flight motion errors derived from the unique drone movements are investigated and attempts have been made to compensate for the geometrical and phase errors caused by motions against the nominal trajectory. Finally, the successful operation of drone SAR system is validated through the focussed SAR images taken over test sites.

  • UAVs for reconnaissance and intelligence operations require long endurance capability, which demands high efficiency of the propulsion system. The distributed propulsion system(DPS) generates the thrust by replacing a large propulsion system with a number of small propulsion systems. A DPS distributed along the wing span can produce gains in propulsion efficiency by reducing ejection velocity. Also, the ingestion of boundary layers through the distributed DPS inlet and ejecting flow from the outlet can improve the lift to drag ratio of the vehicle. This study investigates the effects of locations and size of the inlet and outlet of the DPS on the blended-wing-body design based on Eppler 337 airfoil, with a CFD tool. The fans in the DPS are modeled as actuator disks for computational efficiency. The best location and aspect ratio of the inlet and outlet are found from lift-to-drag ratio and pitching moment considerations.

  • The Global Positioning System (GPS) is widely used to aid the navigation of aerial vehicles. However, the GPS cannot be used indoors, so alternative navigation methods are needed to be developed for micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) flying in GPS-denied environments. In this paper, a real-time three-dimensional (3-D) indoor navigation system and closed-loop control of a quad-rotor aerial vehicle equipped with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a low-cost light detection and ranging (LIDAR) is presented. In order to estimate the pose of the vehicle equipped with the two-dimensional LIDAR, an octree-based grid map and Monte-Carlo Localization (MCL) are adopted. The navigation results using the MCL are then evaluated by making a comparison with a motion capture system. Finally, the results are used for closed-loop control in order to validate its positioning accuracy during procedures for stable hovering and waypoint-following.

  • The auxiliary power unit (APU) of a rotorcraft starts the engine during operation/flying. The APU is composed of a gas turbine engine type. The starting principle of the component is that the electric start motor generates the power required for starting by rotating the shaft. In this study, quality improvement was performed by applying an over-running clutch (ORC) between the APU and the starter motor to secure the operability of the starter motor of the APU mounted on the rotorcraft. The starter motor has the main role of starting the APU, but during operation, it is rotated without load by the rotational force of the APU gear shaft, resulting in friction at the brush. This phenomenon causes abrasion of the brush of the starter motor. Consequently, when the APU operation time increases, the brush life decreases, and the operability of the APU is affected. In this study, an ORC that separates the interlocking between the start motor brush abrasion and the APU operation time was applied to improve the operability/durability of the APU starter motor. The effect was verified through a test, and the technical feasibility of the design change was analyzed.

  • SOTM is a device for the satellite communication on the move. Many studies are conducted on microstrip, waveguide and array antenna for the low profile of the SOTM's antenna. But those antennas have a problem that is difficult to adjust the polarization, and for that reason we have studied the parabolic antenna structure. The general form of parabolic reflector structure is circular, but we used cut-off shape reflector by cutting the upper and lower reflector for low profile antenna. Accordingly, this results in the decrease of reflector area which causes reduced gain and G/T ratio. In order to solve this problem, we have transformed and designed the sub reflector for improving the efficiency and gain of the cut- off shape parabolic antenna.

  • Usually piston or rotary engines are installed at UAV's under 100 kg payload class. Those engine are less expensive and easy to get, but they require higher operating and maintenance costs due to shorter life and unique fuel usage. They are also too noisy to operate in urban area and have too strong vibration to carry sophisticated payloads. On the contrary, a gas turbine engine has drawbacks like higher specific fuel consumption and weight to power ratio, even it has many operating and maintenance benefits. This study aims to design a small turboshaft engine with a recuperator to overcome those demerits. A tilt rotor UAV(TR-60) developed by KARI was chosen as an imaginary target aircraft, and engine power and size were derived from it. This paper describes engine requirements, design process, and initial reference point cycle design.

  • In this paper, controller Propose to prevent compressor surge and improve the transient response of the fuel flow control system of turbojet engine. Turbojet engine controller is designed by applying Artificial Neural Network PID control algorithm and make an inference by applying Artificial Neural Network Error Back Propagation Algorithm. To prevent any surge or a flame out event during the engine acceleration or deceleration, the ANN PID controller effectively controls the fuel flow input of the control system. ANN PID results are used as the fuel flow control inputs to prevent compressor surge and flame-out for turbo-jet engine and the controller is designed to converge to the desired speed quickly and safely. Using MATLAB to perform computer simulations verified the performance of the proposed controller. Response characteristics pursuant to the gain were analyzed by simulation.

  • The georeferencing accuracy of the sensory data acquired by an aerial monitoring system heavily depends on the performance of the GPS/IMU mounted on the system. The employment of a high performance but expensive GPS/IMU unit causes to increase the developmental cost of the overall system. In this study, we simulate the images and GPS/IMU data acquired by an UAV-based aerial monitoring system using an inexpensive integrated GPS/IMU of a MEMS type, and perform the image georeferencing by applying the aerial triangulation to the simulated sensory data without any GCP. The image georeferencing results are then analyzed to assess the accuracy of the estimated exterior orientation parameters of the images and ground points coordinates. The analysis indicates that the RMSEs of the exterior orientation parameters and ground point coordinates is significantly decreased by about 90% in comparison with those resulted from the direct georeferencing without the aerial triangulation. From this study, we confirmed the high possibility to develop a low-cost real-time aerial monitoring system.

  • The increased availability of portable, low-cost, high resolution video equipments have resulted in a rapid growth of the applications for video sequences. These video devices can be mounted in handhold unit, mobile unit and airborne platforms like maned or unmaned helicopter, plane, airship, etc. This paper describes the feasibility fur generating image map from the experimental results we designed to track the interested points extracted by KLT operator in the neighboring frames and implement image matching for each frames taken from UAV (Unmaned Aerial Vehicle). In the image registration for neighbourhood frames of aerial video, the results demonstrate the successful rate of matching slightly decreases as the drift between frames increases, and also that the stable photographing is more important matching condition than the pixel shift.
